1­ Objective  

In this essay we are going  to present Taxi Driver a 1976 psychological thriller movie from Italo‐American director Martin Scorsese, and identified the keys to 

success in a cultural context and particulary the cultural context in the 70s in America .Why Taxi Driver became a classic in American history cinema, and why after more than 30 years later it is still a reference in the movie culture.

Taxi Driver is an American film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader,starring Robert De Niro and 13 years old actress Jodie Foster.It is the fifth film of Young director Martin Scorsese after I Call First ( 1967 ) , Boxcar Bertha ( 1972 ) , Mean Streets ( 1973) and Alice doesn’t live here anymore ( 1974) . Distributed by Columbia Picture, with a budget of 1.3 million dollars ,Taxi Driver finally earned 28 262 574 millions dollars only in America. Taxi Driver got more than  30 nominations in different award film ceremonys , including 4 oscars and won the palme d’or in the prestigious cannes film festival. 

The movie takes place soon after the end of the vietnam war in New York city, Travis Bickle,a veteran of the Vietnam war,played by Robert De Niro,is having big troubles to get use to and return to the society he used to know before the 

war.He become a taxi driver because he is having some chronic insomnia , so to cope his sleeping troubles he decides to become a taxi driver at night . Lonely and depressed,traumatize by the vietnam war,his night meetings while facing the violence of New York city are slowing going to reveal his psychopathic personality.He will decide soon to rescue a young prostitute , played by Jodie Foster,  from her pimp. 

Paul Schrader, the screenwriter ,used his own personnal experience to write the script.At the beginning of the 70 s , unable to sell any of his works , alone , he slowly fell into alcoholism, wandering into the streets of New York city at night and going often to porn cinema while he couldn’t sleep ( like the main character, Tavis Bickle, in Taxi Driver) . 

Director,Martin Scorsese,wasn’t a well famous director in 1976 ,His most important work previous Taxi Driver was Mean Streets,released in 1973 , taking place in New York city and telling us the story of a man trying to move up in the mafia. 

Robert de Niro was  already a well know and recognized actor in 1976.He won the national society of film critics awards for best supporting actor in 1973 for his role in mean streets and also won the academy award of best supporting actor for the Godfather part II ,directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1974.

3­ Analysis Taxi Driver in a cultural context 

 

The Vietnam war ended the 30 april 1975 , America has been trapped and bogged down in this war for 20 years.Strongly controversial by American people and huge trauma for USA ,the Vietnam war is going to be brought to the big screen in many movies such as The Deer Hunter (1978), Apocalypse now ( 1979 ),Platoon(1986) or Full Metal Jacket (1987). 

Taxi Driver is one of the first film about the return of an American soldier from the Vietnam war  and his atempt to get back to a normal life .Taxi Driver shows 

us how the Vietnam war had been a psychological trauma for the soldiers.Travis Bickle is totally confused, lost and alone,he reprensents perfectly how the soldier can feel while returning from  war.We can see the parallel between the american society and Travis Bickle , the main character .USA society in the 1970s is a confused society , specially due to the controversial Vietnam war and also due to the racism issues.Like America, Travis Bickle is totally lost , confused and also racist,and because of his total confusion and disorder , it will lead him to insane acts and behavior.

Martin Scorsese ‘ Taxi Driver is one of the main representative movie taking place into what we call “the new Hollywood” or “the American new wave”.The new Hollywood refers to a period from the end of the 1960s till early 1980s where a new generation of filmakers( directors, writers, actors) made movies of a new genre. Taking for model the French new wave ( 1950‐1960) , the new Hollywood is characterized by a much more realistic way to tell story and to show it , the new Hollywood directors started to shoot more and more in a real locations , in exteriors ( the golden age of Hollywood 1920‐1950 used to shoot in studios) which give already a bigger realistic dimension of the movie.Also,the American new wave start to treat more about human  troubles and bring into theatres controversial themes (violence , sex …)Movies from the new Hollywood also allowed the audience to identify to the story or/and the main character(s) by a much more realistic way to shot it and to tell the story. 

The new Hollywood movies are a way to show a story , a narrative, by the personal view and opinion of the director. 

Also,editing (fragmented and discontinuous ) and the way to shoot ( use massive  of long takes) allowed the audience to identify more to the character and also brought more excitement and suspence to the audience. 

As said in the book Film History:An Introduction:” The combination of objective realism,subjective realism,and authorial commentary created a narrative ambiguity in the sense that questions that arise in a film are not answered in the end.”

4­ Why Taxi Driver became a classic and why it is    considerate as a masterpiece ( key to success ) . 

 

 

 

 

Taxi Driver is,nowadays,considered as one of the best movie of all time,it is classified as the 52 rank of  best American film of all time by the American film institute and in 1994 it was selected to be preserved in the national film registry by the American library of congress. 

Here are some elements that show us why Taxi Driver became such a classic and a reference in film history: 

‐First of all we can talk about Robert De Niro’s acting, It is one of the most important part of this movie.Before to get on stage and to shot the film,he worked for 1 month as a taxi driver ,doing 12 hours shift a day.This helped him to merge with the character and make his character much more realistic.His acting is really amazing, so intense and totally impressive. 

Besides Robert de Niro’s acting,the rest of the actors are also doing a fantastic job. 

‐The talent and skills of director Martin Scorsese are significant as well.He manages to get the audience into the head of Travis Bickle but also manage to show us  how the character feels lonely , confused , lost in this new “ civilisation”and how he is going slowly during the movie to a psychopath and to a state of alienation and isolation .Martin Scorsese personal way to film New 

York city and the main character , and the way he uses space or uses specific and uncommon camera movements get the audience into what Travis Bickle can feels. 

 

‐Of course every film begin by a script. Paul Schrader ‘ script is probably one of the best ever written particularly by using his personal experience in loneliness and  bring this mental state into a veteran from Vietnam war coming back home. 

 

Taxi Driver ‘main theme is isolation, loneliness.During the whole movie these feelings are omnipresent and never go away.Also ,nowadays,35 years after ,loneliness is still ultra present in our society.This main theme of isolation was,is and will be always a main concern for human being. 

 

The ending of Taxi Driver is a huge part of his success.Indeed,the ending let the audience guess what is happening and what will happen.Like many movies during the new hollywood , such as” 2001:A space odyssey” or” One flew over the cuckoo’s nest” the ending is free to interpretation.Every single person in the audience can make up his own opinion of what Travis will become and on how to analyse the film. 

 

Taxi Driver fit totally into his time(how a veteran, coming back from the Vietnam war,is getting totally confused and lost in his new life) but can also fit into today.The same exact film could be done today with the same theme of alienation and feeling of loneliness with for example a soldier coming back for Irak or Afgahnistan. 

 

Also , few sequences in the movie are totally unforgettable and done with such realism and creativity  like the scene where Travis Bickle alias Robert de Niro is talking to himself to a mirror. The script was saying that the character should talk to himself to the mirror, but Robert de Niro totally improvised the lines:”Are you talking to me ? I’m the only one here…”The final sequence, where Travis is going to the hotel to kill Iris ‘ s pimp is also remarkable. Full of violence and blood but still very deep in the way that we realize (if it wasn’t done before ) that Travis lost totally sense of reality,he thinks he is doing something good ( for himself and for the society ). 

 

 

 

 

5­ Conclusion 

 

 

I consider Taxi Driver as one of the best movie I’ve ever seen. The acting, the mise en scene , the directing by Martin Scorsese and the story and all the meaning of it  are one of the best ever made.  

 

The way how a psychopath is represented, and how we see that he is slowly going into insanity and how can the trauma of war can impact to someone is really well shown into Taxi Driver.Martin Scorsese’ s movie fit perfectly into the 1970s, Travis Bickle is as lost and confused as the American society at this time.Still today Taxi Driver is a reference as  psychological thriller movie and also as showing the results( mentally and psychological) of war on a human being.And of course Robert De Niro’s performance is probably the best , the most convincing and persuasive ever made.
