Streptomyces sp., NRRL 12049. The A-39183 antibiotics are closely related antibiotics. The in- dividual A-39183 factors are separated by chromatography. The A-39183 factors are anti- bacterial agents which have activity against Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species that are penicillin resistant. The A-39183 factors are also active against both gram-positive and gram- negative anaerobic bacteria, and are ionophores.

Collagen polymers are rendered non- inflammatory by complexation with alkaline phosphatase according to the procedure dis- closed. Applications of these non-inflammatory collagen complexes include the production of non-inflammatory collagen sutures, collagen soft tissue replacements !ncluding wound and burn coverings and arterial vessel replacements, collagen drug delivery devices, and vitreous replacement for opthalmologic therapy. Gels composed of the collagen-alkaline phosphatase conjugate plus calcium hydroxide are useful as an agent in endodontic therapy. Structural dur- ability and stabilization of the anti- inflammatory properties of the material are enhanced by crosslinking with giutaraldehyde or other crosslinking agents. Glutaraldehyde also acts to sterilize and disinfect the collagen con- jugate prior to in-vivo use.
