MARKET LIVESTOCK UPDATEThis will certainly be a year we will not forget!4-H club meetings and all county 4-H activities will be cancelleduntil we receive word that it is again safe to gather together.There are many questions that we all have regarding marketanimal projects. At this time, there are few answers to most ofthe questions since we are dealing with a totally new andunfamiliar situation. Here are a few frequently asked questions:
CAN I STILL DO A 4-H PROJECTIF THERE ARE NO SHOWS ORSALES?Yes, to complete a 4-H project, you just need to have a goal,work throughout the year to learn about that project area, keeptrack of “What I Did, and What I Learned”, and keep a �nancialrecord of your expenses and income. Usually, 4-H members arealso encouraged to give a demonstration and have an exhibit atthe fair. However, the COVID-19 restrictions may limit theopportunities to complete these last two items.
SHOULD I PURCHASE A MARKET ANIMAL THISYEAR IF I WAS PLANNING TO SHOW A GOAT,
WHEN WILL WE KNOW WHATTO EXPECT?Since the recommendations of public gatherings and the staterequirements are changing weekly or sometimes daily, we willbe updating all our 4-H families as soon as we can. Ourcommunication will be sent directly to families enrolled in 4-HOnline and also to 4-H club leaders. All decisions about tagging,weighing and shows will be based on the advice of Maryland Department of Agriculture andpublic health experts.Please note that Extension employees are working remotely and are continuing to provideresources for families, farms, and businesses. Although the 4-H O�ce is mandated to remainclosed to the public, our 4-H staff is available to answer any questions by phone or email. Wewill be sending out updates on all 4-H activities as soon as decisions are made. Please feelfree to contact us if we can help you with anything.
SHEEP OR SWINE?For those concerned about purchasing animals- pigs, sheep, goats- we strongly recommendmaking sound �nancially responsible purchases this year. You should consider if you will beable to sell it privately or put it in your own freezer, in the event our fair must be cancelled.Please think hard about your purchasing and how you plan to feed your purchases. We assureyou, we will be doing everything possible to make sure the fair and livestock sale go onwithout interruption.
I HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED MY STEER, WHATSHOULD I DO NOW?Unfortunately, when members purchased and tagged their steers in November, we all had noidea that this pandemic would be coming. The message above about the requirements for aproject will still apply. This year, talking to potential buyers may be more important than everto help you have a successful year.
WE USUALLY RECEIVE THE 4-H MARKETANIMAL GUIDEBOOK, WILL THAT BE AVAILABLETHIS YEAR?The distribution of the Market Livestock Guidebook is delayed until dates and plans have beendetermined.
