What is MDSS?What is MDSS?
• A decision support system that integrates pastpast and and
current current weather, maintenance weather, maintenance and road conditionsroad conditions
with forecastedforecasted weatherweather and roadroad conditionsconditions to
evaluate and recommend treatment optionsrecommend treatment options
• Transforms huge volumes of weather and
maintenance information into direct response
recommendations
• Provides more effective and efficient use of
maintenance resources on actual patrol routes
• Promotes increased safety, reliability and mobility
for the traveling public

Concept of OperationsConcept of Operations
• Weather creates a “dynamic” layer on the
road surface
– The intent of maintenance is to modify and/or remove this layer in the most effective and efficient manner.
• Road weather, desired level of service,
and chemical/resources available are combined to recommend the most
appropriate treatment recommendation
