BEING LIFTED UP
In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds Nicodemus how Moses had “lifted up the serpent in the desert.” Then Jesus says,
“So must the Son of Man be lifted up, that all who believe may have eternal life in him.” The evangelist clearly saw this “lifting up” of Jesus to mean his crucifixion.
That “lifting up” of the serpent by Moses is described in today’s first reading. The people were attacked
by “saraph serpents,” and many died. God had Moses make an image of the serpent and put it on a pole and lift it up. The people who had been bitten looked at it and recovered.
Jesus “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave.” Lifted up on the cross, he was despised and seemed the most abject of people. But it was in embracing this dis-grace and painful death that he became the bearer of eternal life for all of us. His “lifting up” in shame was also his “lifting up” in glory and triumph. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús le recuerda a Nicodemo cómo Moisés había “levantado la serpiente en el desierto”. Entonces
dice Jesús, “así también es necesario que el Hijo del Hombre sea levantado en alto, para que todo aquel que crea tenga por él vida eterna”. El evangelista claramente da a entender que este “ser levantado” de Jesús se refiere a su crucifixión.
La serpiente que Moisés “levantó” está descrita en la primera lectura de hoy. El
pueblo fue atacado por “serpientes de las llamadas ‘ardientes’”, y muchos murieron. Dios dijo a Moisés que hiciera una imagen de la serpiente y la pusiera en un palo y la levantara. Si alguno era mordido, miraba a la serpiente y se recuperaba.
Jesús se “despojó de sí mismo, tomando la forma de un es-clavo”. Levantado en la cruz, fue escarnecido y parecía el más despreciable de todos. Pero fue abrazando esta deshonrosa y penosa muerte que llegó a ser el portador de la vida eterna para todos nosotros. BIBLE STUDY IS BACK
The first meeting is Saturday, 20 September, after the 8:00 AM Mass, in the Retreat Room in the Dougherty Activ-ity Center. Beginning in October we will meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month. Martha Valukas is the facilitator. We use the Navarre Bible, paperback edition, Catholic Letters (ISBN 1-85182-919-5). Join Us for a Movie!
Catholics Reaching Out, an evangelization program for inactive Catholics, will show the movie The Way starring Martin Sheen. The movie will be shown in Dougherty Activity Center in the Retreat Room on September 15, 2014 at 7 PM. All parish-ioners are invited to enjoy the film and to discuss the Lord’s calling us through transformation in His Love.

Toiletry Drive for Migrants & Refugees
In support of Catholic Community Services’ Migrants & Refugee Program here in our diocese, we will host a Toiletry Drive over the next 3 weekends. All are invited to bring in various toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc.). Items collected will be given to CCS to be shared with the various migrant and refugee families they serve.
Catholic Community Services (CCS) Continues to Help Migrant Mothers and Children
The flow of young mothers and children seeking refuge from the violence and poverty of their home countries continues through our city in smaller numbers. CCS is one of the primary agencies responding to this humani-tarian crisis. Cash donations are still needed to give CCS the flexibility to address specific needs of individuals. Monetary donations by check should be made out to Catholic Community Services. Donation of specific items can be made through our parish. The only items needed are snacks for the bus trip across the country, especially granola bars, beef jerky, crackers and similar non-perishable items that can be eaten “on the road”.
Campaña de Artículos de Aseo para Migrantes y Refugiados
Paras apoyar al Programa de Catholic Community Services para Migrantes y Refugiados en nuestra Diócesis, patrocinaremos una Campaña de Artículos de Aseo durante los siguientes 3 fines de semana. Invitamos a todos a que traigan varios artículos (jabones, shampoo, pasta de dientes, cepillos de dientes, desodo-rantes, etc.). Lo que se recabe será entregado a CCS para que
compartan con los variados migrantes y familias de refugiados que asisten.
Catholic Community Services (CCS) Continúa Ayudando a Madres y Niños Migrantes
El flujo de las madres jóvenes y niños que buscan refugio de la violencia y la pobreza de sus países de origen, a través de nuestra ciudad, últimmente ha disminuido considerablemente, pero sigue en menor cantidad. CCS sigue siendo uno de los principales organismos que se organizan para responder a esta crisis humanitaria. Continuan colaborando con CCS los voluntarios que entrenaron a principios de este verano. Sin embargo, todavía se nece-sitan donaciones en efectivo (dando así a CCS la flexibilidad para atender las necesidades específicas de las personas). Las donaciones monetarias por cheque deben hacerse a nombre de Catholic Community Services. Pueden hacer las donaciones a través de nuestra parroquia. Los únicos pro-ductos necesarios son bocadillos para el viaje en autobús a través del país: especialmente barras de granola, carne seca, galletas y artículos similares que no sean perecederos y que se puedan comer “en el camino”.

Religious Education Program
Children in Kindergarten – 8th grade meet on Sundays from 11:15 AM until 12:45 PM. Students in 7th, 8th or 9th grade who have not celebrated First Reconciliation and/or First Eucharist also meet on Sundays at this time.
Confirmation I: Begins the 1½-year process for high school students who want to be confirmed in 2015. Classes start on Wednesday, 17 September at 7:00 PM in the North / South Room. Register with our Religious Education Office.
Confirmation II: For high school students who were a part of the Youth Ministry–Catechetical Confirmation I program last year. Classes continue on Wednesday, 17 September at 7:00 PM in Dougherty Hall. Confirmation will be celebrated on Tues-day, 25 November.
In order to enter into sacramental preparations, students must have completed a full year of regular attendance in Reli-gious Education.

Los niños desde Kinder hasta 8° grado se reúnen los domin-gos de 11:15 AM hasta las 12:45 PM. Los alumnos de 7°, 8° o 9° grados que aún no han celebrado su Primera Reconcili-ación y/o Primera Eucaristía, también se reúnen los domin-gos a la misma hora.
Confirmación I: Empieza el proceso de 1½-años para alumnus de high school que desean ser Confirmados en 2015. Las clases em-piezan el miércoles, 17 de septiembre a las 7:00 PM en el salón Norte / Sur. Inscríbanse en la oficina de Instrucción Religiosa.
Confirmación II: Para estudiantes de high school que formaron parte del programa Youth Ministry–Confirmación I el año pasado. Las clases continúan el miércoles, 17 de septiembre a las 7:00 PM en Dougherty Hall. La Confirmación se celebrará el martes, 25 de noviembre.
Con el fin de iniciar preparaciones sacramentales, los estudiantes deben haber completado un año completo de asistencia regular a Educación Religiosa.

martes, 25 de noviembre a las 6:30 PM. Adultos católicos (18 años o mayores) que fueron bautizados y recibieron Primera Comunión pero

Adult Faith Formation Classes
Adult Faith Formation classes to be held each Sunday will begin on 14 September at 11:15 AM. The theme for this first class will be Baptism. It seems appropriate to begin in the same place where we began our new life in Christ, our beginning as members of the Church. Classes of-fered in English will be held in Dougherty Hall and classes offered in Spanish will be held in Weitzel Hall. Discussion in the Fall will be based on The Bible Blue-print – A Catholic’s Guide to Understanding and Embracing God’s Word by Joe Paprocki. Registration is not required to attend.

It is the policy of the Diocese of Tucson that with Catho-lics who were baptized in infancy or early childhood, Confirmation is celebrated when they are at least 15 years of age. PCIC, Literacy Connects and The University of Arizona College of Education will sponsor an Education Accountability Session for Candidates for the Legislature, Pima Community College Board, and other positions on Sunday afternoon, 28 September at 4:00 PM at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1300 N. Greasewood. Candidates have con-firmed their attendance. The candidates will discuss education issues such as school funding and quality and the future of the community college. Other themes will address health care, immigration, poverty, eco-nomic development, the environment, and the 2014 County Bond for funding an animal care center.

A mediados de julio, la apelación Vivir en la Fe, Dar con Amor había reci-bido poco menos de $3,7 millones en promesas y regalos. Si bien esta es un noticia maravillosa en su conjunto, me entristece ver que San Cirilo está todavía muy por debajo del objetivo.
