#7 - Use 'Hinge' questions to assessunderstanding.Instead of having the usualmultiple choice questions withone right answer and the othersas incorrect, use each answer torefer to a particular level of

understanding.

For example, answer 1 may be a'B' grade answer, answer 2 maybe a 'C' grade. Use a tool like

eClicker to aggregate the scoresand feedback to students.

#8 - Project almost anything for a large group

GoodReader is an app for the iPad

that allows the viewing of manydifferent file formats on the iPad

itself. It will also allow them to be

 projected over the VGA-out

connector.

The software does much more

(hooks to servers, FTPs up and

down, etc.) but I am always on the

lookout for apps that project for

large group work.

If you know of any apps that

project, please add them to this

Google Form after looking at theones on this list.

#25: Keep group projects flowing withinstant access to informationOne iPad goes a long way when studentsare working in a group. It gives theminstant access to the information theyneed to succeed - either through apps, stored data, or the internet.

It's far more dynamic than a laptop - it canbe shared, passed around, propped up,gathered around - it quickly becomes akey tool for enabling group work.

This instant, shared, tactile access really

keeps student group projects flowing!

#31 - QuickVoice

The QuickVoice app is great for recordingchildren's sentences. They can playbackthe sentence they want to write and countthe words out as it plays. As they hear

the sentence in the right order, it hasmade it easier for my Reception class toremember what word they need to soundout next.

We have also used this to record our favourite songs and nursery rhymes.

This app is great for children to make their own eBooks and save them.

They can write using their finger straightonto the pages or open a text box and use

the onscreen keyboard.

It helps my Reception class to sequencethe story that we are reading by thinkingwhat page would come next.

It's a great way to share stories thatchildren make up themselves.

It's a fun app that's quite addictivetoo. I find myself feeding them atthe weekend!

Another pet app I would like tointroduce is TouchPets but itrequires an internet connection.

# 34 - Talking Tom and Talking Roby A few of my children have seen these twocharacters on iPhones at home, so it is great

using a resource that parents have in theclassroom.

The characters listen to your voice and repeatwhat you say. You can 'film' the charactersspeaking and upload it to the internet.

My Reception class has had a lot of fun learninghow language works through this app. Most of the class was saying 'You're a silly cat' so thatTalking Tom would repeat this, which they foundhilarious. What surprised me was that one of myboys realised they should be saying 'I'm a silly

cat' so that Talking Tom would repeat thatphrase, and the joke had the desired effect.

(Make sure you go into the iPad settings and

turn off 'Violence' though)

# 35 - Pirate Jack's Treasure Hunt

This game is a lot of fun! Pirate Jack is ina bit of trouble and needs your help tohunt for treasure. The game begins with aspelling game to rescue Pirate Jack. OncePirate Jack is free, you explore an islandwith him and complete 8 tasks that involve

numeracy, literacy and science concepts.

It's a little old for my Reception class, butit has a lot of potential with older children. But for now, I'll just play the game at the

weekends!

# 36 - Finger Count (fingerCountLt) A very simple app.

The screen is black.

You touch the screen. Number 1 is spoken and itappears. You touch the screen again. Number 2 is spoken

and it appears.Then 3... then 4... 5... 6... all the way to 100.

Each number is in a different colour. It's great for learning numbers in sequence, finding numbers onthe screen and counting backwards. When youtouch a number for the second time, it bursts. If you burst a number that is in the middle of thesequence, the app re-orders all the numbers whichfollow it so that there are no missing numbers onthe screen.

#38 - Using DropBox to get work onto / off the iPadsOne of the challenges of usingthe iPad in a classroom isgetting work onto or off thedevices without relying on

iTunes.

Investigate the use of DropBoxfor this purpose. A DropBoxaccount will automatically sync

files wirelessly from a teacher laptop to a set of iPads usingthe same account. You couldset up a folder in DropBox for each student in the class.

The DropBox websitecontains a list of iPad appsthat support DropBox sharing- there are a huge number of

them.

The DropBox iPad applicationallows sharing of images tothe DropBox account, so for

apps that don't incorporateDropBox sharing, take ascreenshot with theHome/Lock buttoncombination and share that!

#41 K12 Timed Reading Practice

As the child is reading the short, timed

stories. the app tracks and gives a words

per minute reading result and also lists

the percentile the child is reading above or

below his class level . I, however, use it

for formative assessment by highlightingwords or sounds on my printed copy of

the story to work on later with the child.

A good assessment tool aswell as an app for improvingliteracy skills and fluency

#43 - Slingnote

http://itunes.apple.com/be/app/sling-note/id385068849?mt=8

I absolutely love the app because it's very easy to use. I use itto make mindmaps with my 8 year-old daughter when she hasto learn her history-lessons. In landscape-view it's easy to cutout a piece of an webpage and drag it to your notebook.Extra's like magic markers and easily changing colors andsizes of fonts helps making structure in the mind-map or

summary. The result can be exported als pdf of to mail.

#45 - Use a textbook

Several textbook publishers haveofferings on the App Store. Lookfor platforms that allowbookmarking, notation, anddynamic content. Ideally the

textbook material would beavailable even if the iPad is notconnected to the internet.

To the right is Inkling, one

popular platform.
