How to Get the Most Out of Your Convention Experience

Welcome! We are honored that you have made the trip to join us. We want this to be a great experience for you. Here are some tips to make this a wonderful convention:

• This year, access detailed PACE information on your mobile device. Go to PACE2015.sched.org/

• Take lots of notes. You can’t remember it all. Refer to your notes when you get home.

• Create an ACTIONS ITEMS LIST in your notes. Every time you get an idea you want to apply, place it in action items. You’ll then have an actions list when you get home.

• Take lots of photos. You’ll remember more of the experience!

• Attend as many sessions as possible. There are plenty to choose from. Make good use of your time.

• Attend our Newcomers’ Orientation. Learn the lay of the land and how to find your way around.

• Introduce yourself to others. Make new friends at our Newcomers’ Orientation! Find people to hang out with. Trade contact info and stay in touch. Try to go to dinner with someone new every night!

• Hang out in our artists’ lounge in the Portola at night. Lots of people will be there. It’s a great way to learn.

• Ask instructors and field painters for pointers when you’re out painting. Use your “Faculty STOP Here” sign.

• Watch demos of field painters so you get lots of ideas in the field.

• Paint with others. It’s more fun and you’ll learn more.

• Snatch up demos and paintings in our art show. Great opportunity to collect great paintings at reason- able prices.

• Introduce yourself to PleinAir team members. We want to know everyone here!

• Most important, KEEP IT FUN!

THANK YOU TO OUR 2015 SPONSORS

PAGE TITLE

Everything starts with a dream. We dreamed of a magazine to lead and reflect the

plein air movement. PleinAir magazine was born. Then we dreamed of a place we

could gather as artists, collectors, gallery owners, and enthusiasts to improve our

skills and become closer to those who share our passion for plein air painting. We

are here together, living that dream. This year I have a new dream to share with

you: We will be launching The Plein Air Force™ — a worldwide effort that asks

you and others in the world of plein air to help people discover plein air painting

and collecting. I hope you will enlist!

It’s an understatement to say I’m honored that you invested your time and money to be here. I’m

also honored to have some of the finest painters in the world on our stages and in our audiences,

some of whom have traveled from as far afield as Brazil, Australia, Russia, Italy, Germany, France,

Zambia, and the UK.

We want to thank you for making the trip to join us at this, the last Plein Air Convention in Monterey.

Whether you flew thousands of miles to be here or just drove in from across town, we’re still very

appreciative that you would choose to spend your time with us.

This year’s convention is the biggest ever — we’re making history together again, with the largest

number of plein air painters painting together in one place at one time! Although it’s going to be

bigger than ever before, we want it to feel smaller, like a gathering of good friends and family, so

we have added a New Friend Connector option. Sign up when you register and we will introduce

you to three others at our (new) Newcomers’ Orientation meeting. If you have any questions or

need help, our Fix-it Man will be able to assist you, whether you want help finding somewhere to

eat, need a ride to a paint-out, or just need a Band-Aid.

This year we have added several evening sessions. Choose from critique sessions; our Rebels of

Plein Air, introducing some younger painters; and nocturne (night) painting sessions. We’ve also

added a party on Thursday night, to mark the end of the indoor sessions.

For those of you who attended last year, you will find many things unchanged: We will paint every

day in some of the most stunning locations in and around Monterey; you have your choice of four

stages with top-notch demos and talks to help you take your painting to the next level; our army of

blue-shirted staff and volunteers is here to help you with any queries; the Showcase Gallery will be

open to the public; and, of course, there’s our extensive Expo Hall — please support our sponsors!

During our paint-outs, you will be able to find our faculty: Just look for the bright flags! We’ve

asked all of them to be generous with their time to help all of you grow as painters. If you need any

faculty advice or assistance while out painting, please display the “Faculty STOP Here” card you

will find in your bag. We’ve asked all faculty to stop and help if they see that sign. I think you’ll find

them all to be interested and helpful.

Please come over and say hello, so we can get acquainted and perhaps get a chance to paint together.

Antonin PassemardAntonin Passemard was trained at the Beaux Arts art school in France. His paint-ings focus on emotions and

the depiction of modern life in its true form; he feels he cannot be honest if he does not paint cars on the street and people in the subway — but also nature in its pure form, because our lives are composed of all those things. In still life, he tries to find the composition rather than composing it himself. Antonin believes his job is to show the beauty in common things. He is influenced by the Impressionists and the realistic artists of the 20 century, but keeps in mind that he is a child of the grunge ’90s.antoninpassemard.com

When approaching a painting, he strives to capture the essence of the landscape by trying to work from a state of flow, where every stroke is swift and effortless. antonpavlenko.com
