José Curado explains how to verify the deals usingHans Staveren's procedure.

In short, if someone wants to check that there is no hanky-panky going on with the procedure they should:1 – Download the "present key" from http://bit.ly/2018pKs or click on link in footer menu on new website 2 – Check Euromillions lottery numbers (the "future key")3 – Download the "past key" from http://bit.ly/2018pKs24 – Run the program (download from http://www.xs4all.nl/~sater/SquareDeal.zip) using the 3-part key according to the instructions – the "present" and "past" fi les and insert the 5 numbers and 2 stars, as presented in the offi cial results, comma separated, when prompted by the program.5 -Compare the hands generated this way with the hands actually played.

Yet again the Vidamar Hotel restaurants are off ering a 20% discount to all participants of the festival. All you need to

Closed Room West North East South Niemi Bilde De Winter Eyde  –  –  –  Pass  Pass  Pass  1NT  Pass  2♣*  Pass  2♥  Pass  3♦  Pass  3NT All PassHoping to fi nd a singleton ♥J/10 in dummy, South led the ♥Q and when it held he cashed the ace and exited with the eight, declarer win-ning, cashing the ♥K as North discarded the ♠5. He cashed the ♦K and played a second diamond. When South discarded the ♠7 declarer went up with dummy’s ace, played a spade to the king and

a spade to the queen and ace. North returned the ♣3 and declarer fi nessed, cashed the ♣AK and then gave up - a fl at board.

Do you see how 3NT can be made? The declarer in the Open Room knew quite

a lot - that South held a weak hand with both majors and had led from a four card suit. He also knew that North preferred spades to hearts and must have diamond support, as South might have had to rebid 3♦.

So, after two rounds of spades say declarer cashes the ♦K (in case the queen is singleton) and then plays a heart! If South wins, cashes the ♥A and continues with the ♥9 declarer ducks and is in control. If South exits with a fourth heart North will be squeezed giving declarer an overtrick.

Although there was no bidding by N/S in the other room declarer still had some information to work with. South had led from a fi ve-card suit headed by the AQ, and given North’s discard it was possible that South held four spades. If that were the case it was very unlikely that they were headed by the ace, as then South might have bid over 1NT.

So, after cashing the ♦K declarer should play the ♠K. If North wins and plays a club then declarer can fi nesse and then run the ♠9 after which there are nine top tricks.

Suppose declarer is worried about the possibil-ity that South holds the ♣Q and wins North’s club return? He then runs the ♠9, crosses to dummy with a diamond and cashes two spades. He then exits with the ♦J and North wins and plays a club, at which point declarer fi nesses and has nine tricks.

CSI Madeira Mark HortonThere are plenty of English language programmes on Portuguese TV- many of them are related to criminal investigations. The Round 8 encounter between Team Sara Silva and Sol Da Caparica was not without incident - let’s investigate.

On the fi rst deal of the match a soft defence allowed 2♠ to make at one table while in the replay N/S climbed all the way to 4♠ which went three down. That was 6 IMPs for Sara Silva.

Then with ♠A5 ♥J97 ♦K10976 ♣AK8 opposite ♠KQ743 ♥AKQ3 ♦2 ♣Q73 the N/S pairs reached 3NT and 6NT by North. Spades were 3-2 so Sol Da Caparica picked up 13 IMPs.

Clearly there was confusion about the meaning of the 5NT bid. It should be a grand slam try, promising that the partnership has all fi ve key-cards and the queen of trumps.

You may be wondering why 7♠ was not doubled?

South was going to double in the hope of

attracting a club lead, but North revealed that he held the ♠A by putting it to his forehead, after which South felt constrained to pass and North was enjoying himself far too much to double.

A trump lead is a better start for the defence, but not enough to defeat the contract. Declarer wins and ducks a spade. He wins the trump return, unblocks the ♣A, ruffs a spade, ruffs a club and runs the diamonds. West will be forced down to the ♠A and ♥Q108 and now declarer cashes the ♥K and throws West in with a spade to lead into dummy’s heart tenace.

Almost Perfect David Burn

It’s got to be…Since everything else about the 21st Madeira

Bridge Festival has been perfect (well, apart perhaps from the wind that on occasion does a better job of deterring invaders than the Maginot Line) I thought I would see what would have hap-pened had the bridge been perfect also. That is: if instead of the horrors we actually perpetrated in the third session of the pairs, how would we have fared had we and our opponents all played perfect bridge?

The answer turned out to be “poorly”. It is a simple matter with the scoring programs used here to determine how many matchpoints the par result on a deal would have achieved, and thus to calculate the percentage reward of per-fection. On the 26 deals in question North-South could do no better than 48.7%, while an infalli-ble East-West would at least have fi nished above average on 51.3%.

That nobody’s perfect was illustrated by only three deals:

S ♣ A ♠ 3 ♥ 8 6 5 4 2 ♦ A Q 9 8 ♣ 10 5 2No one achieved the par result of N/S-100 in 5♥ doubled. Games could be, and were, made in both directions, often doubled. One North-South pair actually alighted in 5♥, but then human frailty

took over in self-cancelling directions, because East-West didn’t double but North-South went down two anyway (for 120/84 matchpoints).

East-West (from 3♥ doubled), and though con-tracts were attempted at every level from one to fi ve, only two East-West pairs had the methods to reach the par spot. Unfortunately, doubtless exhausted by the exigencies of the auction, one of them went down one and the other down three.

There was a deal (board 5) on which abso-lute par was achieved by only one pair, giving North-South a complete bottom for defending 6NT. Another deal (board 12) saw the absolute par of 7NT (making on a 3-3 break and a guess in the endgame) achieved by two East-West pairs, for 1 matchpoint to North-South. The best North-South could do for achieving par was 181/204 matchpoints (on board 20, for ten tricks in 3NT–this was managed by a few pairs).

What does it all mean? Nothing very much, but at least those North-Souths who fi nished a little below average can console themselves with this thought: you’re almost perfect.
