ROBINSON PRESEASON ALL-SEC; LADY DOGS PICKED FOURTH BY MEDIA» Georgia senior forward Caliya Robinson was one of seven student-athletes from across the conference to be named to the 2018 Preseason All-SEC Team. The 2017-18 Katrina McClain Award finalist has totaled 221 blocked shots and needs just 76 to break Georgia’s career record of 297 set by Tawana McDonald.

In the league’s preseason poll, media picked the Lady Bulldogs fourth behind Mississippi State, South Carolina and Tennessee. The coaches picked Georgia third behind MSU and South Carolina.

“Anytime you are mentioned among the top seven players in this league, it is a tremendous honor and I am happy for Caliya,” head coach Joni Taylor said. “We know that preseason predictions are based largely on what a team accomplished last season and it is not where you start but where you finish. As always, the SEC is going to be highly competitive, and we are focused on getting better in every single thing we do. It’s going to be a great season in this conference and we are ready to get started.”

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS UNDER TAYLOR» Georgia continued its upward trend under head coach Joni Taylor last season. The Lady Bulldogs finished tied with South Carolina for second place in the final SEC standings after being picked eighth in the preseason poll. It’s a trend that goes all the way back to Taylor’s first year, when her squad was picked ninth and finished sixth. Then, in 2016-17, Georgia was picked 12th and finished eighth.

TOP SCORERS RETURN » Six of the Lady Bulldogs’ top seven scorers and 70 percent of the team’s scoring returns. The team does lose leading scorer Mackenzie Engram and her 12.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, but returns starters Caliya Robinson (2018 All-SEC Team), Que Morrison (2018 SEC All-Freshman Team) and Taja Cole (sixth in SEC in assists).

LONE SENIOR AMONG SEC’S BEST» Robinson is arguably the most complete returning player in the league as the only returner to rank in the top-20 in scoring, rebounding, blocks and steals a year ago. Robinson is also one of only two returning players in the SEC, joining Teaira McCowan from Mississippi State, to rank in the top-20 in scoring and top-10 in rebounding last season.

The Marietta native enters her final year in Athens fourth in the Georgia record book for career blocked shots. Last season, Robinson finished just two shy of the single-season mark with 101 -- the second-best total in the SEC.

DEFENSE TRAVELS YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT» Georgia’s mantra over the last few years has been Defense Travels. The Lady Bulldogs put up impressive defensive numbers last year, finishing first in the SEC in field-goal percentage defense (35.1 percent), second in blocked shots (196), second in turnovers forced (18.6 per game) and second in scoring defense (57.6 ppg). Those defensive numbers are reflective of Coach Taylor’s first three seasons as head coach. In her tenure, Georgia is 25-0 when holding opponents to 50 points or less and has been one of the leading defensive teams in the league.

MOST WINS SINCE 2013» The team’s 26-7 overall record last year marked Georgia’s most wins in a single season since 2012-13. The Lady Bulldogs stormed out to a 12-1 start at the conclusion of non-conference play and then defeated three ranked SEC opponents to finish with a 12-4 league record.

Among the Lady Bulldogs’ most impressive wins was a 92-84 overtime win at Texas A&M and two victories against Missouri. The 12 wins in league play marked the most for Georgia since the team made the Elite Eight in 2012-13.

THE LAST MEETING - GEORGIA 60, TECH 53 (12/17/17)

2017: Georgia Downs Tech, 60-53

ATHENS, Ga.-- The Georgia Lady Bulldogs basketball team used a second-half surge to outlast the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 60-53 Sunday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum.

After being down 29-26 at the half, Georgia (9-1) outscored Georgia Tech (9-2) 20-7 in the third quarter en route to the Lady Bulldogs’ sixth win in the last seven meetings in the series. Georgia owns a 16-0 all-time record against the Yellow Jackets in Athens and a 35-5 lead in the all-time series.

“That was fun,” Georgia head coach Joni Taylor said. “I thought it was great momentum. We were able to get some stops, get a shot clock violation and bear down defensively. We executed off the press, and were able to get some easy baskets which fueled our confidence.”

Spearheading the Lady Bulldogs was senior forward Mackenzie Engram, who posted her second double-double of the season and seventh in her career with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also tacked on a career-high four assists. Also scoring in double digits were junior forward Caliya Robinson (12) and freshman Gabby Connally (10). Robinson added five rebounds and collected two blocks, her seventh game this season with at least two blocks.

The Yellow Jackets scored within the first six seconds of the game with a layup, but Robinson immediately answered with a fadeaway jumper. Georgia took its first lead at 7-5 on a 3-pointer by freshman Que Morrison. Georgia Tech regained the lead and held it until the final minute of the first quarter, when sophomore forward Stephanie Paul scored a layup assisted by Engram. Fresh-man guard Gabby Connally upped the lead with a stepback jumper to close out the first period at 18-15.

• Player of the Week: Mississippi State’s Teaira McCowan started her senior season with back-to-back double-doubles, averaging 18.0 ppg and 14.5 rpg. Mc-Cowan also blocked 11 shots, a total that is the most in the nation, and shot 57.1% from the field and 70.6% at the line. She now has recorded eight-straight double-doubles going back to last season and 41 for her career, fourth-most among active NCAA Division I players and first among SEC players. She started the campaign with her ninth-career game with 20-plus points and 15-plus rebounds, tallying 24 points, 17 boards and a career-high 7 blocked shots against Southeast Missouri. It was the fifth time in her last six games that she has scored 20 or more points. Her seven blocks are tied for the most in an NCAA DI game this season. McCowan capped the week by put-ting up 12 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks on the road against a Virginia team that is receiving votes after go-ing to the NCAA Tournament last year. McCowan put up those numbers and shot 50% from the field going against 6-9 Felicia Aiyeotan, a 2018 ACC All-Defensive Team selection. For the week, McCowan passed 1,300 career points and moved into 12th on MSU’s all-time scoring list.• Freshman of the Week: Kentucky’s Rhyne Howard scored 15 points to start the week vs. Alabama State, add-ing six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Her 15 points were the fifth most in a player’s varsity de-but in program history. Followed with a breakout game vs. Southern with a game-high 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including 7-of-11 from long range. Her seven 3-pointers in the game tied the program record for most 3s in a game which is also held by Sara Potts, who did it twice in her career (vs. High Point in 2004 and vs. Chatta-nooga in 2005). Howard is the first freshman to hit seven 3s in a game. The native of Cleveland, Tenn., is the first UK freshman to score 25 or more points in a game since Alexis Jennings scored 27 vs. Tennessee State in Decem-ber of 2014. Her 29 points were the second most points scored by a UK freshman in a single game in the Matthew Mitchell era. A’dia Mathies scored 32 points vs. Liberty on Mar. 20, 2010. Her strong play has led Kentucky to a 2-0 start as the Wildcats won consecutive games by 50 or more points for the first time in program history.
