Editorial Statement

The change in the color of our cover provides visual notification of the change in the Editorship of the Journal. In assuming the task we wish to express our appreciation to the previous Editor, Professor J.J. Pollitt, to his editorial staff, and to the Princeton University Press, for their help and advice in easing the transition. To the many schol- ars who have submitted manuscripts to the AIA during this period, we offer our apologies for the inevitable delays in acknowledging the receipt of material and in notifying them of editorial deci- sions. We trust that no such delays will occur in the future, as we are keenly aware of the need for

prompt publication in the archaeological field. A considerable number of manuscripts, accepted by our predecessor, have not yet been published; we shall honor previous editorial commitments with all possible speed; but authors are warned that as much as one year from now may elapse before publication.

The Journal will continue to publish articles and notes on the art and archaeology of the classical and preclassical Mediterranean, as well as of the Near East and Europe. A special reminder of this policy is addressed to prospective contributors among Near Eastern and European scholars. All manuscripts sent to us for consideration should conform to the new guidelines set out in the revised "Notes for Contributors and Abbreviations" printed in this issue. Authors are particularly urged to note the request for good photographs, since excellence of illustrations is one of our priorities despite high costs of printing and technical difficulties.

The following changes in policy and format have been introduced:

i. The Journal wishes to provide a comprehen- sive coverage of archaeological news, while avoid- ing duplication with other major periodicals. Thus the Newsletters from Greece (resumed by our predecessor) and from Cyprus will be reduced in length, by being limited to the most important developments in each year. To the present News- letter from Asia Minor, Newsletters from the Near East, from Europe and probably from North Africa will be added as soon as possible.

2. In publishing excavation reports, we shall

give preference to those which are concise state- ments of progress in archaeological knowledge and which summarize and interpret results rather than giving a trench-by-trench account of seasonal ac- tivities. Field directors should also consider sub- mitting articles to the Journal of Field Archaeol- ogy, which is directly concerned with the technical side of excavations. Editors of journals in the United States and Canada devoted to disciplines related to archaeology are invited to submit state- ments on publication policy, which we will print in order to provide guidance for prospective con- tributors among our readers.

3. In accordance with the resolutions on illegal excavation and trade passed by the AIA Council in 1973 (Archaeology 27 [19741 P-. 27) we shall re- ject articles and notes on objects in private or pub- lic collections purchased after December 30, 1973, if without pedigree as parts of previously existing collections or documentation as legal exports from the country of origin.

4. New World archaeology lies outside the prov- ince of the Journal, but we hope to add, as a special feature, a review of new publications in that field which may be of interest to Old World archaeol- ogists. We understand that a similar review of our publications is being contemplated by our New World colleagues.

5. All contributions will carry the full official address of the author, in order to facilitate direct communication from readers.

6. A list of completed doctoral dissertations in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology in the United States and Canada will be printed once a year (preferably in the Fall issue). Our first list is incomplete, but will serve as a notification of this endeavor. Contributions from all institutions of higher learning in the two countries are solicited and should be sent to our editorial office on an annual basis.

7. All requests for the exchange of periodicals, as well as the exchange publications themselves, should be sent to our editorial office.

8. We shall print announcements of scholarly interest sent to us from professional organizations, but will not publish advertisements of any kind.

2 AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ARCHAEOLOGY [AJA 82

9. Necrologies of Old World archaeologists affili- ated with institutions in the United States and Canada will be regularly accepted.

We urge our readers to send us their comments and suggestions. It is our wish to maintain the

high standards of scholarship and accuracy set by previous editors and to keep the Journal comparable with leading archaeological publications in this

country and abroad, as the official organ of the

Archaeological Institute of America in the spirit of its Charter.

Notes for Contributors and Abbreviations

American Journal of Archaeology Vol. 82, No. I (Winter 1978)

These Notes supersede those printed in AJA 8o (1976) 1-8. Their purpose is to make it easier for authors to prepare manuscripts for submission, and for the staff to edit them for the press. Clarity is more important than uniformity, but within a given article consistency is required. Single offprints may be obtained gratis from the Editor-in-Chief.

For guidance on quotations not dealt with in these notes it is recommended that the University of Chicago Manual of Style, I2th ed. (Chicago 1969) be adopted.

In order to effect maximum economy in the hours and cost involved in typesetting, contributors are urgently requested to observe the following notes. Articles improperly prepared, even though accepted for publication, may be returned to the author for retyping.

I. Mss. must be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only of standard-size paper (about 8/2 x

S1"). Ample margins must be left on all sides of the sheet.

2. Each article must be accompanied by an ab- stract of not more than one typewritten page in length. The abstract should outline the problems discussed, methodology and conclusions.

3. Footnotes: number in one series; double-space on pages assembled at the end of the text, never in the text nor at the bottom of the pages of text. Spe- cific page references, not f. or ff., must be given.

4. Authors should retain a carbon copy of their ms., since it is undesirable to return the original with the galley proofs. Page and plate proof are normally not submitted to the author. Authors should include the address which they wish printed at the end of the article; to facilitate correspond- ence, authors should notify the editors whenever they cannot be reached at that address.

5. Illustrations: all figures and illustrations are placed in the text of the article or note. "Figure" (fig. I, 2, etc.) refers to photographs. "Illustration" (ill. I, 2, etc.) refers to line drawings. Figs. and ills. should be numbered consecutively in separate series, i.e. an article may have fig. I, 2, etc. and ill. I, 2, etc. Figures and illustrations must be num- bered and identified with the name of the con- tributor on the back of each and accompanied by a double-spaced list of captions. Figures and il- lustrations must not be mounted.

Special instructions regarding the printing of figures and illustrations should be included when the manuscript is submitted. Photographs should be of excellent quality to insure good reproduc-

tion. Drawings must be in black ink on white paper.

6. The abbreviations of titles of periodicals and standard reference works approved by AJA are printed herewith. In the case of titles not listed, clarity rather than economy of space should be sought.

7. In citations of the names of ancient authors and documents, unfamiliar names and titles should be written in full. Names written in full in the text may be abbreviated in the footnotes. Abbreviations should be those listed in the Oxford Classical Dic- tionary, second edition (1970) ix-xii; names not listed there should be abbreviated in comparable fashion. Abbreviations should in general be fuller than those used in Liddell-Scott-Jones Greek En- glish Lexicon and in Harper's Latin Dictionary.

8. When modern or ancient works are cited fre- quently in footnotes, either of the following proce- dures may be adopted. a) At the beginning of the article, full bibliographical references are given in a footnote, accompanied by short-title forms which will be used in following footnotes; see AJA 73 (1969) I n. I; 185 n. I. b) Full bibliographical ref- erence is given the first time a work is mentioned; in following footnotes references are made to the original citation, thus: "Jones (supra n. 5) 116." Reference to the footnote in which the full citation is given is necessary even if the full reference ap- pears in the immediately preceding note. Succes- sive footnotes may become separated by one or more pages of letterpress, so that it might be diffi- cult to track down the original reference.

9. Illustrations in foreign language publications must be cited in English, e.g. Pl. in preference to Taf., Tav., etc.

lo. In the transliteration of Greek, any anglicized

form of a Greek word or proper name which has come into general use may be employed. Authors are at liberty to use any system of transliteration which is intelligible and reasonably consistent. Au-

4 AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ARCHAEOLOGY [AJA 82

thors who wish to do so may follow the systems recommended by the JHS 69 (1969) I-6 and by the American Philological Association, "Instructions for the Preparation of Copy," TAPA 98 (1967) xcvii, sec. io. Systems for the transliteration of other languages may be found in George F. von Ostermann, Manual of Foreign Languages for the Use of Printers and Translators, ed. 4 rev. (Cen- tral Book Co., New York 1952).

ii. Use "supra" and "infra" instead of "above" and "below." Use "line" or "lines" rather than 1. or 11., which may be confused with numerals.

12. A quotation in any language of more than ten typewritten lines may be printed as a separate paragraph, in smaller type than that used in the

body of the article, flush with both margins, and without quotation marks. Such quotations should, however, be double-spaced and indented in the

manuscript in order to make their presence clear. Shorter quotations in the text will be printed as follows: Greek, without quotation marks; Latin, in italics, without quotation marks; other lan-

guages, in roman type, with quotation marks.

13. For capitalization, punctuation, and division of words, follow the Chicago University Press Manual of Style, 12th ed. (1969).

14. Inscriptions should be bracketed according to the "Leyden system," as follows: [ ] = letters which once existed on the stone, but have disap- peared, and are supplied by the editor; ( ) scriptio plena of abbreviations, contractions or sym- bols, supplied by the editor; { } = letters errone- ously engraved on the stone, which are suppressed by the editor; < > = additions or corrections of the editor, supplying letters accidentally omitted

by the stone-cutter, or correcting the stone-cutter's errors of engraving (the literal reading of the stone

being given in the commentary); [ ] = letters erased on the stone; [[a3]] = letters erased on the stone, traces of which are still visible; I [aP/] - letters erased on the stone which are supplied by the editor; a -= letters of doubtful reading.

See also S. Dow, Conventions in Editing, GRBSA 2, published by Duke University, Dur- ham, N.C.

15. Roman numerals are to be used generally a) to cite the volumes of modern works and the vol- umes of collections (such as IG, CIL, CAH) in connection with which the use of Roman numerals has become established practice, and b) to give references to works in which pages are numbered in Roman numerals.

In periodicals, use Arabic numerals rather than Roman. In bibliographical references, use p. (pp.) and col. (cols.) only when their omission would cause misunderstanding. Omit bracketing the year of publication when the periodical cited has no serial volume number.

16. Examples of citations of ancient texts: Thuc. 6.71.2; 7.14.3-4. Vitr. De arch.

2.3.3. Themistius Orat. 3-4 (P- 31.15 ed. Dindorf). If

the edition is rare or unfamiliar, add place and date: (p. 31.15 ed. W. Dindorf, Leipzig 183i).

Corpus paroemiograph. graec., edd. E.L. von Leutsch and F.G. Schneidewin (G6ttingen 1839-1851) I pp. 350-51, sec. 13. If the section number did not have to be cited, the reference would be: I 350-51.

E. Honigmann, s.v. Syria, RE 4 A (1932) I549- 1727. In this and preceding example, note use of date of volume, which is always desirable as an indication of the relative age of the material.

Black Sea," AJA 52 (I1948) 7-10. E.J.H. Mackay, Chanhu-Daro Excavations, I935-

1936 ("American Oriental Series," 20; New Haven, Amer. Orient. Soc. 1943) 26I, table 2.

18. All numerical dates are to be written in their

entirety: e.g. 202/201 B.C., I973-I974. 19. Page citations: a) numbers between i and 99,

Ioo and 1o9, 200 and 209, etc., are to be written in their entirety: e.g. 78-79, 103-109, Ioo000-Ioo009. b) numbers Iio and above: for the second number use only the last two digits: e.g. 120o-34, 1156-57.

Abbreviations

The following list of abbreviations attempts to follow, insofar as possible, generally accepted usage. This list supersedes the lists of abbreviations previously published in AJA, the latest of which is that printed in Volume 80 (1976).

Authors referring more than two or three times to a periodical not listed below should give the full title at the first reference, and if they wish to use an abbreviation later should add: (hereafter . . .). The principle of never abbreviating names or periodicals which are a single word (Gnomon, Hesperia, Klio) will be maintained. Initial articles in titles of periodicals are always dropped (e.g. Ergon rather than To Ergon).

A number of works, not periodicals, are included in the list of abbreviations (e.g. ARV). Those not included in the following list should be cited in full on their first appearance in an article and the ab- breviation to be used thereafter specified. On the first appearance in an article of any title of a book it should be given in full. An abbreviated form, noted in connection with the first appearance of the title, may be used later. When in doubt, always use full title.
