    Exemptions at stake

As was the case the last two years, the winners of the VSGA Four-Ball

Stroke Play Championship will earn exemptions into the upcoming

VSGA Amateur Championship, if they are not already exempt.

  • So who’s next?

The VSGA Four-Ball Championship has had a recent history

of producing first-time champions. In 2014, Brandon La-

Croix teamed with Matt Chandler to win, his second title

in the event. (He won with Nick Biesecker in 2011.) But in

each of the last five years, the winning side featuring two

players who had never won a VSGA Four-Ball Stroke Play

title before, including last year when Francesco Romano

and Dudley Payne III survived a playoff to win their first

championship in the event. The last side to successfully

defend a title in this event was Keith Decker and Ryan Stin-

nett, who won in 2006 and 2007.

Pictured: BJ Maben (standing) and Kyle Mutter, who won

the VSGA Four-Ball Stroke Play championship in 2017.

    54th VSGA Four-Ball Championship » vsga.org

    Bandon on the brain?

Two of the sides competing in this week’s championship

will travel to Oregon next weekend to participate in the

    2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship. Last October,

two sides qualified at the Country Club of Petersburg:

Dustin Groves and Jordan Utley, and Justin Young and

Scott Shingler. Another participant, Jeff Long, qualified in

West Virginia with partner Michael Brennan, who is not

playing this week at Dominion Valley. Instead, Long will

team with John Rosenstock. Groves and Utley were final-

ists at last year’s VSGA Four-Ball Match Play Champion-

ship, falling to Long and Kyle Bailey. Young and Shingler

are making their second trip to the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball

together and were runners-up at the 2016 VSGA Four-Ball

Stroke Play Championship at River Bend in Great Falls.

Pictured: Dustin Groves (left) and Jordan Utley.

    Notable...

» The three sides that participated in the sudden-death playoff

last year at Cedar Point are all back in the field this year: Defend-

ing champions Dudley Payne III and Francesco Romano; Buck

Brittain and Garland Green; and Jimmy Delp and Ben Keefer.

Payne and Romano won when Romano sunk a 10-foot par putt

    on No. 18.

» One player to watch is Tyler Gulliksen, who will team with Ad-

am Houck for this year’s event. Three years ago at River Bend,

Gulliksen partnered with Adam Horton before the two partici-

pated in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship. Gulliksen

then went to sea on a Naval deployment before settling in San

Diego for two years, where at age 31 he competed for the Uni-

versity of San Diego’s men’s golf team while finishing up his

graduate degree. Gulliksen is currently a member at Fort Belvoir

Golf Club and lives in Dunn Loring.

» Delp was one of five players who finished in a five-way tie for

medalist honors at U.S. Open local qualifying at The Federal Club

    last week.

» One side featuring brothers is in the field this week: Steve and

    Jay Serrao.
