STUDENT RABBI’S REPORT

On the first day of Elul, the month leading up to Rosh Hashanah, I came across a song written in quarantine by my friend Adah Hetko:

My world is my block my apartment's my country my state is my bedroom my bed is my body My country's full of frying butter of frying butter, my country's full

Hearing Adah’s song was a revelation. In our current moment, I have struggled to maintain grounded hope. I have found myself bouncing between baseless optimism (everything is going to be ok soon!) and despair (all is lost). In Adah’s song, I found a way in between these poles, a reminder to focus on the tiny palpable sparks that emerge in the small worlds of quarantined lives. In friend’s organizing for justice, in my tomato plant giving forth fruit, in a thunderstorm breaking a heat wave, I am finding hope. As a practice in this month of reflection leading to the holidays, I invite you to recall and collect small moments of delight. What tiny surprises and little joys are finding you? When are you able to smell the rightness of frying butter?

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Our Zoom Kabbalat Shabbat services led by

Joey Glick has developed a loyal following of

mutually supportive participants who enjoy sharing

Torah, prayer and conversation. Beginning with the

first Friday of September, we will be moving these

earlier to 6PM to adjust with the seasonal time

changes.

Thanks to Lucrecia Kleinmann for

orchestrating fun Zoom social events during the

month of August. I know that all who attended

enjoyed the games and the companionship during

our summer of relative social isolation.

Due to the uncertainties related to the

pandemic, it has been difficult to plan for high

holidays this year. Our current strategy is to have

live, in person Rosh Hashana services on September

19 and September 20 at 9AM led by congregants.

We will follow social distancing rules comparable

to what we have been doing for shabbat.

Attendance will be limited to 30 congregants for

each service. Please call Betsey in the office (518-

792-4945) to reserve a spot for one of these

services. We will also have Tashlich at Crandall

Park Sunday September 20 at 4 PM, with no

reservations required. I anticipate that between the 2

services, everyone who wants to participate in a live

service will have the opportunity. In addition, Joey

Glick will lead a pre-Rosh Hashana Zoom teaching

session in the week leading up to Rosh Hashana.

Please join Joey for live in-person Shabbat

services August 28 at 7pm and August 29 at 9:30

am; and again for Shabbat Shuvah on September 26

at 9:30am, Kol Nidre on September 27 at 6pm and

Yom Kippur on September 28 at 9am. The

September 25 Friday evening services will coincide

with Zoom Kabbalat Shabbat joint family service at

6:15pm.

Please keep in mind that we have worked

hard to continue our religious, spiritual and

communal functions during the pandemic. Our

financial obligations continue, including both

personnel and building costs. Shaaray Tefila deeply

appreciates payment of your annual dues. We

recognize that some of you may be under increased

financial stress related to Covid. For those of you

who are able, please also consider a generous

donation to our annual Yom Kippur appeal.

Shana Tova.

President

YOM KIPPUR APPEAL

We no longer solicit donations during our service and would like the opportunity to read the donations received in memory of or in honor of friends and family prior to Yiskor.

We have lost many long time members. Some have passed away; some have moved out of the area. Our dues have not gone up. We depend on dues, fundraising and donations to provide you with the services you have come to expect.

This is your Synagogue and now we are asking everyone to make a meaningful donation to keep our programming going and our building open. We have been fortunate to have had very successful Yom Kippur Appeals each and every year. Any donation, of any size, is important as long as everyone participates.

Please fill it out the Pledge form on the last page of the bulletin and send it in so we can prepare the list for reading on Yom Kippur. Financial survival of Congregation Shaaray Tefila depends on all of us.

CEMETERY UPDATES

Following the May storm damage to our cemetery, Loiselle Memorials repaired three headstones. They were very responsive to our needs and have long been a trusted monument company providing grave markers for our cemetery. We thank them for all they do for us. The tree damage has been taken care of and the fence repairs will be done shortly.

Chairman, and

GUEST ESSAY written by 11-year

old Elizabeth Fram

On September 18, 2017, a young member of the

congregation, Elias Steven LaRock age 5, was

taken away due to illness leaving a large void in

his family and our community. Countless tears

were shed and heartache felt by his family,

friends, and extended community in the three

years since he passed, and we continue to

mourn the loss and celebrate his life.

A book collection and distribution project in

memory of Elias has been set up and run in the

community. At the Warren County Cooperative

Extension building on Schroon River Road in

Warrensburg there is a bookcase that is

continuously restocked for children dedicated in

memory of Elias. Over five-thousand books have

been re-homed in the memory of Elias; they

have been given to teachers, after school

programs, social workers, nursing homes, senior

centers, little free libraries, and placed at public

places such as laundromats and medical

offices. All the books are free.

Elizabeth Fram, age 11, who misses her dear

friend Elias recently gave Bonnie Yanklowitz, Co-

President of the Sisterhood of CST more than

1,000 books to be distributed in the greater

Glens Falls Region. Bonnie has many connections

in the community as an educator and a lifelong

resident of the area. The books Elizabeth gave

to Bonnie came from friends and neighbors. If

you would like to donate books or would like to

receive books, please contact Bonnie Yanklowitz

at [email protected] or Laura Fram at

[email protected] or 802-917-1805. Thank

you!

to Ariel Frank

and Anil Nathan, and Stacey Mandelbaum and Alex Frank, on the birth of their first son/grandson!

Ariel and Anil had a baby boy born on August

10, 2020. His name is Dev Philip Nathan,

named for Alex's father, Philip J. Frank. He

weighed 6 lbs., 7 oz., and was 19.75 inches

long. Blessings to Mom and Dad, Bubbe and

Avo, and the whole family!

CONGRATULATIONS! to Elizabeth Fram who achieved High Honors at the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth’s Talent Search for her exceptional test scores in math and verbal (New Jersey)! Elizabeth is the daughter of Andrew and Laura Fram.

SEPTEMBER 2020

September Greetings Everyone,

On behalf of Sisterhood, best wishes for a healthy, safe New Year which will begin on Friday, September 18th. Have a safe Sukkot and Simchat Torah also during these different times. Healing thoughts and prayers to several Members, Friends and their Families.

We extend deepest sympathy to the families and friends of our Sisterhood and Synagogue Members: Dr. Joseph Mandelbaum (apology-left out last year), Roselyn (Roz) Zweibelson Seaman, Jeremy Kudan, Muriel Shapiro Condell, Scott Sheerer and Brody Swartz.

Also to our synagogue members’ and/or friends’ families: Annabel Lapper, Renee and Allen Wadler and Hillary Rovinsky.

Thank you to everyone who made donations and/or sponsored Onegs and/or Kiddushes. Thanks to those who volunteered their time and energy with shopping, preparations and clean-ups for Onegs, Kiddushes, Mourner’s meals, unveilings, holidays and social events for Sisterhood and the Synagogue prior to March 2020.

Sisterhood warmly welcomes new Synagogue Members: Mary Kuntz, Lana and Jonathan Studley and daughter, Seth Harris, and Mike Pletman.

Best Wishes for a good, safe year to Rebecca Charhon, Director of the Combined Temple-Synagogue Religious School and to the teachers, students and assistants.

Thank you to Lucrecia Kleinmann and Family for planning some fun activities with ZOOM this summer.

A warm Sisterhood welcome to our new Student Rabbi Joey Glick who will be at the Shul Friday and Saturday, August 28th and 29th. Joey will be with us for Yom Kippur Services September 25-28th. Many of us have met Joey on ZOOM from Boston for Friday evening services. We wish him safe, good holidays this fall.

Sisterhood misses our previous Student Rabbi Rachel Talia Kaplan and wishes her well and safe for 5781.

Please attend or use ZOOM for the Congregational meeting on Sunday, August 30th.

We miss many of our past members who have moved to other states and some of our Snowbirds who chose to stay South this summer. Stay safe and healthy everyone in those different locations during challenging times.

Best wishes to our May, June and July high school and college graduates. Stay safe with your continued studies and/or the work force.

Mazel Tov to the Nathan, Frank and Mandelbaum Families on the birth of Dev Philip Nathan, son of Ariel Frank and Anil Nathan and grandson of Stacey Mandelbaum and Alex Frank.

Congratulations and kudos to Elizabeth Fram for her continued special book project in memory of Elias (Eli) Cohen.

Please continue to support our gift shop for your Shabbat, gift-giving (especially Bar/Bat Mitzvah) and/or holiday needs although celebrated differently since March. Contact Nancy Goldstein with any gift shop questions.

Many thanks to Nancy, Francine, and Cher for your volunteer hours and work for the many weekly Onegs and Kiddushes prior to March and to all who helped with set-up and clean-up.

Sisterhood News and Dues letters will be mailed soon. Thank you for your continued membership and support.

Dr. Dolly Chary Morrissey, our immediate Sisterhood Past Co-President sent a message from FL. “Greetings Everyone, I miss you. Have a Safe, Healthy New Year!”

Dolly, I already miss your years of input for Sisterhood and the NEWS and many Sisterhood members and friends miss you, wish you well and L’Shana Tovah.

Everyone, on behalf of Sisterhood continue to be safe and healthy this fall.

Shana Tovah!
