Parsha SummaryEikev • It Came to PassDeuteronomy 7:12 - 11:25
The Bedside Torah: Wisdom, Visions, and Dream Rabbi Bradely Shavit Artson
Parashat Eikev opens with a reference to the blessings that will flow if the people live in harmony with God’s rules. Moses reminds the Israel-ites that they do not have to worry about the Canaanites, despite their numbers or their power, since God is in their midst. Israel will thrive and prosper if it remains loyal to God and God’s covenant, because “man does not live on bread alone, but on anything that Adonai decrees.”
God is giving Israel a rich and bounteous land. Gratitude is the optimal response to that graciousness, including thanking God after meals for the food and the land.
Moses then shifts tone, instructing against attitudes of self-righteous-ness that Israel’s victories and conquest might engender. Instead, the Jews are to hold on to humility as a safeguard against arrogance and smugness. Toward that end, Moses reminds his listeners of the sin of the golden calf and of God’s anger which was the result of that offense.
After that tragic incident, God renews the covenant with instructions to craft a second set of the Ten Commandments and the selection of the Levites for service in the Tabernacle (and later the Temple).
Chapter 10:12-19 contains a summary of religious faith second to none, starting with God’s sovereignty and uniqueness, moving through God’s selection of Israel and its fidelity to God’s commands, and ending with the need to bring justice to all peoples as the only proper fruit of faithful-ness to God.
Chapter 11 exhorts Israel to love God and to observe God’s command-ments. Paragraphs from this chapter form the middle selections of the Kriyat Shema, the daily recitation of the Shema in Talmudic and contemporary Judaism. Ve-hayah Im Shamoa speaks of the collective consequences of social greed and injustice, and of the need to teach and study these teachings repeatedly.
Finally, the parashah concludes with the assurance that faith and fidelity to God will secure the success of the conquest of Eretz Yisrael.
