Why New RAT is Needed?
New RAT should achieve Significant Gains to justify 5G
Question - LTE enhancement cannot achieve these gains? Major change is really needed to achieve above gains?

Keys to Motivate New RAT
Only network densification, i.e., small cell, is not sufficient to realize the 5G requirements
New RAT is needed to exploit: Wider bandwidth in higher frequency bands (e.g., > 10GHz) Enhanced spectrum efficiency via massive MIMO
technology
Spectrum extension
Network densification
Spectrumefficiency
100x data rate Gbps-order typical rate (~10Gbps peak rate)
1000x densification is not realistic
1000x capacity/km2
Data rate = spectrum efficiency x bandwidth
Required several 100MHz ~ GHz-order bandwidth
Typically less than 10bps/Hz

New RAT Characteristics (1) Numerology to exploit higher frequency & wider bandwidth
Wider subcarrier spacing, i.e., higher symbol rate, desired for: Robustness against phase noise Avoidance of complex carrier aggregation using too many component
carriers
Shorter TTI for low latency (< 1ms) Consider scalability from LTE numerology
Low complexity implementation for LTE/new RAT dual-mode terminals Easy support of dual connectivity between LTE and new RAT
Frequency LTE
New RAT Wider bandwidth with
wider subcarrier spacing
Non-backward compatible to LTE
NTT DOCOMO, INC., Copyright 2014, All rights reserved. 11 NTT DOCOMO Confidential
New RAT Characteristics (2) Flexibility to support variable scenarios (D2D, wireless backhaul, multi-hop, etc.) RAT design considering DL/UL symmetry
Signal waveform: OFDM as baseline for up to 30GHz
High affinity with MIMO technologies in multi-path fading environments Alternative multi-carrier waveforms such as FBMC also can be considered
Single carrier waveform for further higher frequencies To prioritize the coverage
Waveform & bandwidth may depend on applied frequency bands Frequency bands
Frequency
e.g. < 10GHz e.g. 10-30GHz e.g. > 30GHz
Bandwidth
Single carrier OFDM (new numerology)
e.g. < 100MHz e.g. 100-1000MHz e.g. >1000MHz

Capability of eLTE RAT Enhanced LTE (eLTE) RAT Capabilities Backward compatibility
Support all LTE capabilities, i.e., coverage, mobility, broadcast services, etc.
Tight-interworking capability with New RAT e.g. for Massive MIMO + Phantom Cell
Continuous enhancement with new functionalities Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)
Further improvement of spectrum efficiency with enhanced receiver capability Support of M2M massive connectivity
eLTE with NOMA will be a good technology for massive connectivity etc.

Deployment/Migration Scenarios In 2020, new RAT will be launched initially from areas, where higher
performance is required, e.g. dense urban area, using higher frequency bands
Enhanced LTE (eLTE) RAT is also introduced to realize tight interworking with new RAT
In beyond 2020, deployment areas of new RAT and eLTE RAT are gradually expanded while introducing additional higher frequency bands
LTE (or LTE-Advanced) cell can be continuously used as eLTE cell for a long-time
