The Practice of the Faith

Continuing my exposition of the sacrament of Baptism, I turn now to the requirements for its reception. First of all, the one to be baptized cannot have received it before. Baptism is conferred through the pouring of water, or immersion in it, and the words, “I baptize you, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” No other names can be substituted, such as, the creator, redeemer, and sanctifier. This follows directly from the command of Jesus: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 28:19). If this is done, baptism is validly given. That is why we do not re-baptize Christians of other denominations if they want to become Catholic. One may be conditionally baptized if there is a serious doubt that it was done correctly. In the Catholic Church, a bishop, priest, or deacon ordinarily gives the sacrament. But, “in a case of necessity any person with the right intention, confers baptism licitly. Pastors of souls, especially the pastor of a parish, are to be concerned that the Christian faithful are taught the correct way to baptize” (Code of Canon Law, 861§2). To baptize validly the above words must be used while pouring water over the person’s forehead. This is only to be done when there is a real danger of death, and not “just in case.” Sometimes parents may become nervous about getting their child baptized and do this just in case something happens before the scheduled date. This should not be done because the sacrament is actually given.

This brings up another all too common problem, namely, parents who have not had their children baptized. It is usually grandparents who are worried about their grandchildren. Their own children may have stopped practicing the faith and so are not passing it on in any way to their children. It is very sad, but outside of the danger of death little can be done. In the case of an infant these two conditions must be met for he or she to be baptized licitly: “1.) The parents or at least one of them, or the person who legitimately takes their place, must consent. 2.) There must be a founded hope that the infant will be brought up in the Catholic religion; if such hope is altogether lacking, the baptism is to be delayed according to the prescripts of particular law after the parents have been advised about the reason” (Canon 868). The parents must promise before baptism is given that they will bring them up in the faith: “You have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so you are accepting the responsibility of training him (her) in the practice of the faith. It will be your duty to bring him (her) up to keep God’s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking?” (Rite of Baptism) We can see then, the importance of understanding this promise,
