SECOND READING Romans 10: 4-13

Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that “the person whodoes these things will live by them.” But the righteousness that comes from faith says, “Donot say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Whowill descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). What does scripture

say? ‘The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart’ (that is, the word of faith that weproclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heartthat God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so

‘No onewho believes in him will be put to shame.’the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, ‘Everyone who calls onthe name of the Lord shall be saved.’

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Commentary: Whereas the law consisted in doing lots of things, a confession of faith in Christ

close. Paul uses Scriptural passages to back up his case: Isaiah 28.16 (No one who believes inhim…) and Joel 2.32 (Everyone who calls on the name…). Paul takes these sayings quite out of

clear. So when Joel spoke of ‘the Lord’ - centuries before the birth of Jesus -meaning suggested a clear reference to the ‘Lord Jesus Christ’.

GOSPEL Luke 4: 1:15

The Lord be with you.And also with you.

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke, chapter 4, beginning at the 1st verse.Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in thewilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all duringthose days, and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, ‘If you are theSon of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.’ Jesus answered him, ‘It is

“One does not live by bread alone.”’ Then the devil led him up and showed him in aninstant all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, ‘To you I will give their gloryand all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.’ Jesus answered him, ‘ “Worship theLord your God, and serve only him.”’ Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed himon the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down

“He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,” and“On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.”’Jesus answered him, ‘It is said, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”’ When the devil

the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all thesurrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.

LENT SERMONS AND STUDIESWe started looking at our Lent book ‘Surprise the World’ by MichaelFrost on Ash Wednesday last week.We should all have a desire to tell others about the Good News but, drawing on St Paul’ -6), Michael Frostsuggests that we aren’t all ‘ ’, proclaiming the gospellike Billy Graham, but we should be ‘ ’ who prayfor evangelists, but also live ‘ ’; that is live in such away that others might find surprising or intriguing, so that people askus ‘why?’ “always be prepared to give an answer toeveryone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”Frost goes on to suggest that there are five habits we can encourage that will help us live such’ ’ This week we look at the first of these: Bless Others. From the OldEnglish, this means ‘to add strength to another’s arm’, so we think about how we canencourage others.
