Session on Change in trend from

    brain drain to brain gain

Unlike the past few years, today

scores of Indians prefer to stay back

in their homeland rather than moving

overseas for jobs, was the unanimous

decision of the panelists at an

interactive session on Brain Drain or

Brain Gain? organised by the Yi

    Bangalore Chapter, Confederation of

    Indian Industry (CII) in association

with the Oxford Bookstore and the

    Christel House India.

India tops the list only next to

Mexico, of countries that receive the

    highest remittance from its nationals

    residing abroad, Mr Manohar Arcot,

    Corporate General Manager, HRD,

Wipro Limited said, quoting the United

    Nations Development Programme

    report.

    dropped drastically due to availability

of jobs in India itself. But at the same

analysing the reasons for a number

    of persons moving abroad seeking

    better career prospects, she pointed

out that lifestyle was one. Inefficien

    political system and bad infrastructure

has also driven scores of persons to

find a better standard of living

abroad, she said. She also highlighted

the fact that recently Germans and

Australians had shown a keen interest

    in being employed in India.

    India to collaborate with developed

    nations, he added.

Quoting the words of the brain behind

the White Revolution, Mr VergheseKurian, he said, India would emerge

Mr Samir Gupta, Young Indians (Yi

    Bangalore Chapter Chair gave the

    introductory remarks. He also

introduced the speakers by giving a

    Interactive Session with

    Mr Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Member

of Parliament; 19 May 2005: NewDelhi

The new team leading CII-Yis Delhi

Chapter kicked off its annual term

with an interactive session with Mr.

    Jyotiraditya Scindia, MP, followed by

    dinner.

    The evening began with drinks

followed by a formal welcome by Yi-

Delhis new Chapter Chair, Mr. Nikhil

Nath. Introducing Yi to Mr. Scindia

and the new members, Mr. Nath saidthat each of us had the desire to

play a role in bringing about change

    and contributing to the development

of our country. Yi provides us a

means to pool our resources and

contribute in a real way. Making a

    short presentation on the concept,

Mr. Nath said that at Yi, we believe

    that the responsibility of developing

India lies in the hands of the younger

generation. Yi is a platform for

professionals who dream of a great

India. Why is it that every youngster

wants to get on the next plane to

the US? We need to instill pride in

our own country, in our own success

stories and our own companies that

can stand head and shoulders with

the best in the world said Mr.

    Nath.

The introduction to Yi was followed

by an overview of the chapters focus

areas for the year Education, Youth

    Affairs Yi Net, Economy, and

    Internal Learning. Members were

invited to sign up for the areas that

interested them most so that they

could be called upon to become a

part of the organizing committees o

specific initiatives in each of these

areas. Mr. Nath then introduced the

    other members of his team.

Picking up the cue from Mr. Naths

    introduction, Mr. Scindia emphasized

the power of each action. He gave

his own example of bringing the

    Lifeline express to his constituency

    and funding the operations conducted

    by its doctors which enabled

hundreds of people to live their lives

    again as complete human beings

Keeping with the spirit of Yi-Delhis

earlier sessions (Young Achieversseries), the discussion with Mr

    Scindia was highly interactive with

many of the 70 attendees asking him

    pointed questions about his views

    and beliefs on politics, economics

work and personal life. Talking abou

his motto in life, Mr Jyotiraditya

Scindia said that he believes in

walking the talk and follows the

credo of Doing what you believe in

and that if you persevere enough

    everything is possible.

Talking about the Youth, he said tha

India has the unique advantage of a

    young population while the western

    countries are aging rapidly. He

    emphasized that Indias young

    population combined with the basis

for sustainable growth gives us an

    unprecedented runway for economic

growth. A firm believer in the power

of the Youth, Mr Scindia said that

only opportunities had to be provided

to harness this huge power that we

    have with us.

Responding to a question on the

difficulties of being a politician, Mr

Scindia said that the canvas he works

on has become wider in politics from the minutiae of resolving local

    issues to large scale infrastructure

    project management. Quipping that

challenges are greater in politics than

the professional field, he said that

expectations are also higher from the

young politicians or the babalog as

    they are known.

Commending the Yi initiative, he said

that he had been hearing about Yi

for some time and was impressed

with the energy of the Yi members

    in the room.

The Yi Delhi focus for this year is

    on:

    Youth Affairs

Youth affairs is targeted at bringing

about change (real and in mindset)

through inspiration and action in our

    schools and colleges. The chapter

brings school into the Yi Net which

in turn provides them with speakers, facilitators and resources. With Yis

    support, students in these schools

take up local initiatives in the area of

    healthcare, infrastructure and

    education. The program has been

    successfully implemented in 21

    institutions and includes 1500

    students.

Delhi Yi Chapter proposes to co-opt

at least 5 to 10 schools and at least

2 to 3 colleges. Regular interactionswith young role models will inspire

the youth. This energy will be

    harnessed to facilitate environment,

health and civic sense drives through

    student initiatives in Yi Nets.

    Education

    After research and discussion with

educators across the country, Yi has

    identified primary (kindergarten to

grade 5) education as its immediate

focus area. Contrary to popular belief

    our research found that primary

education suffered not from the lack

of teachers or facilities but the lack

    of materials teaching aids and

learning tools. To address this, Yi

    has developed a program called

    AKSHARA which will create resource

    centres for young children. The

    design, content, management

    instructions and budgets for the

creating and operation of the centres

    has been standardized and packaged

    into an easy-to-execute package

costing one lac rupees per centre.

Over the next twelve months, each

Yi chapter will roll out at least five

such centres totalling over 50 centres

and impacting the lives of over fifty

    thousand young children across thecountry.

    Learning

Yi learning events are aimed at

    fostering ideas, creating inspiration,

    and personal improvement. Mostly

focused on Yi members, these events

    include visits to companies,

    interactions with international

missions in India, and closed room

    learning sessions with leading young

Indians in government, business andthe arts.

CII Yi Delhi chapter recently started

    the Young Achievers Series which

allows Yi members to interact closely

with leaders in business and other

    fields and therefore provides a

platform for members to learn the

inside story and the techniques and

tools that contributed to the success

    of these individuals.

    Economy

    An entrepreneurs conclave will

promote the spirit of enterprise. This

will include a Best Young Achiever

    award.

in Kerala on Thursday, 12th May

2005 at 1600 hrs. The venue was

    high cost, low productivity, low

    investment and low employment

economy. It is felt that State cannot

continue to have high level of social

consumption with slow growth of the

    economy, particularly in sectors like

    agriculture and industry.

One of the major weaknesses of the

industrial sector in Kerala is the lackof investment. It appears that the

State could not benefit much from

    the liberalisation policies followed by

the Government of India as evident

from the very low level of investment

made in the industrial sector. The

position of the State is nowhere near

    the neighboring States in attracting

    investment, both domestic and

    external.

    The reasons for the industrial

    backwardness and low level of

investment in the state can be

attributed to a host of factors like

high cost of production mainly on

    account of higher labour charges,

scarcity of land and its high cost,

    psychological fear (psych cost, as

some call it) of entrepreneurs due to

    labour unrest, power, lack of

    infrastructure facilities, etc.

It is in this background that Young

Indian (Yi) Cochin Chapter CII Kerala

    & is organized the Brainstorming

    Session.

    The Objective of the Brainstorming

session was to identify the factors

that have a significant bearing on

    the Investment Climate and to

    develop a Roadmap to stimulate

interest among investors to look at

    Kerala as a Potential Investment

    Destination.

The Session was moderated by Mr.

    Navas Meeran, Vice Chairman, CII

Kerala & Member Yi Kochi Chapter.

A panel of 18 members, composing

of senior members from CII and Yi

discussed and debated on the topic.

    The Session was sponsored by

    ADFIK, Agency for the Development

    of Food Processing Industries in

    Kerala, a Government of Kerala

initiative. A report on the discussion,

with an action plan to attract

investment in the state was prepared

    and submitted to ADFIK.

    Periyar in Coma

    Two day photograph exhibition on

the river Periyar, 26 & 27 th May

    2005, Gandhi Bhavan, Ernakulam

Oh God, is this the water that people

in Kochi are drinking! was the

reaction from the former Minster, V

M Sudheeran, on being at the

exhibition of photographs on the river

    Periyar. The senior Congress Leader

    was inaugurating the exhibition,

    Periyar in Coma, which was

organized by Yi Kochi Chapter in

association with an NGO, the Periyar

    Malineekarana Virudha Samithi

(PMVS) at the Gandhi Bhavan Hall,

    Kochi.

    The two-day exhibition featured 70

    frames by renowned Environmental

    photographer, Zainudeen Edayar.

These 70 frames captured thedistress of the river that is catering

to a whole society and the

    horrifying images of pollution

that the river suffers from. The

    photo journey starts from the

    picturistique settings of the

    upstream Periyar and moves

    towards more disturbing scenes

of the river. Play of colour

as when furnace oil leaked from

one of the industrial unit blend

with the river already yellowed by

chemicals or the blood flushed ou

    from the slaughter house creating

patterns in the river - attains an

    ironical dimension, where the

    photographer communicates the

    horrors of pollution through beautifu

    images.

The exhibition was open for public

from 1000 hrs to 2000 hrs on 26th

and 27th May. More than 2000

people had a look at the exhibition

    Documentaries on Environment were

    also played at the venue.

    The valedictory function featured a

    play, Naalamathe Aani (The Fourth

Nail) based on a novel by the famous

    Malayalam writer Anand. The

    speakers at the Valedictory function

    included Mr. Umang Patodia

Chairman, Yi Kochi Chapter, Dr. K S

Davis (Psychologist), Mr. P K Prakash

    (Journalist), Adv. P K Ibrahim

    Chairman, Local Area Environmen

    Pune

A governing council meeting of the

YI Pune Chapter was held on 10

    June. Dr Nitin Kareer, Municipal

    Commissioner, Pune Municipal

    Corporation interacted with members

at this meeting. During the over two

    hour interaction Dr. Kareer presented

his vision for the city of Pune and

    together areas were identified where

YI could work with the Corporationfor the betterment of the city. A

number of new initiatives in all the

focus areas of YI emerged as a result

of this meeting. Certain YI members

took on the responsibility to clearly

    outline and define the various

    initiatives. Also the ongoing initiatives

    would be further stregthened. The

Pune Chapter is currently working on

    3 Initiatives Tsunami, Employability

    and Street Children.

    Tsunami Initiative

    YI Pune members supported the

Rotary Club of Pune Riverside in the

    rehabilitation of Puddupetai village,

close to Cuddalore to provide boats,

nets, GPS systems etc to help with

the livelihood of the affected villagers.

    They contributed Rs. 3,01,000/-

    towards this purpose. This initiative

was drawn to a close, however, a

group of YI members would continue

to monitor and report the progressof the villagers of Puddupetai.

    Employability Initiative

One of the major concerns for our

country is the creation of employment

    and entrepreneurship. At the same

time it is critical that the employable

youth are trained with the necessary

skill sets to be able to succeed in

securing jobs when they are made

available. If we are to achieve high

economic growth it is critical that ahigh caliber work force with multiple

skill sets is made available to

    industry. Dr.

    Reddys Labs

    under a specific

    program has

    formulated a

    wonderful process

    of ensuring the

    same. YI Pune is

    working with them

    by using theirmodel to create

    worthy employable

    candidates from economically weaker

sections of our society. Dr Nitin

Kareer agreed to provide space at

    the Maulana Azad Smarak Building

in Koregaon Park to further the Yi

    Lab project in Pune.

    Initiative for Sustainable Development

    of Street Children

There are an estimated 100 million

street children in India comprising of

    abandoned children and those who

have run away from home, tribal

    families settling on city streets,

children from slums etc. The idea is

to make a world of a difference to

their lives. YI Pune is working towards

making a permanent change in shaping

the lives of street children in the city

of Pune beginning with the street

children at one major road intersection

    captions..............

    captions..............

    in the city.

    Delhi and

    Hyderabad provide

    night shelters to

    street children

    wherein Gov

    provides schooling

    and one meal to

these children. Thesame could be done in Pune as well

Dr Kareer suggested that Yi suppor

a shelter for street children in Pune

    YI would provide the necessary

volunteer base including the YI Net

students and work on a sustainable

model for the meals. PMC would

provide class rooms at night and also

build extra toilets for night use. This

would give a significant boost to this

    initiative.

Yi Pune Chapter is also in touch witha local residential school in Pune run

by Dr Jadhav. Dr Jadhav is highly

    committed and is doing excellen

work. He has agreed to enrol more

children in his school supported by

YI. Dr Parag Sancheti an active Y

    member and Healthcare Chairperson

    volunteered to organise free Health

check up camps for the children at

    the Wagholi school.

    Recently, I went to Guangjou

    for some official work. What

hit me instantly was massive infrastructure all

around. From Airports to customs clearance facilities to

express ways to hotels to no of taxis to the massive

exhibition halls, one was simply wondering about the

method and the pace with which the Chinese Govt is

pushing for a larger ever slice in the world economy.

Everything has Govt participation and Govt imprint. There

are many companies that are worlds largest producers, in

their chosen areas and most of them have huge State or

Central Govt investment. Govt invests because of one

common passion that unites all of Chinas politicians, the

passion for economic growth. The Govt investment

encourages the entrepreneurs and companies to think scale.

With scale comes the cost advantage and that is moving

factories from world over to China. The kind of trade

promotion that the Chinese Govt machinery is undertaking

the world over is to be seen to be believed. According to

me China is the 2nd country after US which has shown the

world how good economic power or potential can be

beautifully intertwined with political muscle. I would give50-50 marks to both Private business and Govt in this

    massive progress made by China.

On the other hand, if we see India we see most of the

market and trade development being led by the private

sector initiative. The infrastructure and the policy

framework lag way behind and only act as an obstacle to

the development of markets and trade. Even the availability

of normal roads, electricity, water which are the bare

necessities for normal economic growth are way behind

the threshold levels. Govt according to me has made little

contribution in the Indian progress so far. At best it has

played the role of a facilitator in a few industries. Still

Indian industry has made progress I would personally give

90% credit to the private enterprise and vision of economic

leaders of modern India. Its only in the last decade that

the Govt has woken up the enormity of the task and

wants to move things faster but due to the coalition

counter forces and the state-center issues the progress

    yet is quite slow.

But, if China has a lot of lead on infrastructure and current

economic status, India has a massive wealth of English

speaking, well-educated and cheaper workforce. India has

proven its world no 1 status in IT/BPO services, automobile

components on both cost and quality fronts. Irrespective of

that how ever I feel that China is well on its way to become

the factory to the world. Larger number of enterprises will

globalize much faster in China than India.

However, the sheer size of the domestic markets and the

competitive advantages of both countries cannot be

ignored by any progressive business organization. Clearly,

there is much to gain even by basing or outsourcing theproducts or services from the country where it is most

    economic.

And if China is emerging as a factory to the world, India

has the potential to be the 2nd factory even while retaining

its tag as the back office to the world.

India is a vast & diverse county

with 29 states (last I counted)

    with over 1500 different

    languages and dialects spoken

    throughout the country. Its an

economy on the march and in various

    ways in transition.

    Objectively speaking, I would tend

to agree that in actual there are two

Indias, the rich India and the poorIndia. The rich India is optimistic,

positive and is looking at competing

    in the global scenario not

    withstanding the handicap and lack

    of infrastructure. Most are actually

    looking for opportunities in these

    challenges. The poor India however,

is stuck in a time warp, where

    standards of living and education

have not increased in past few

decades or maybe even a fewcenturies, the people in this India,

    due to obvious reasons, have

probably given up all hopes. In fact,

most of us have not even seen these

parts; we have read and heard about

it in the likes of Time magazines,

BBC and other such news mediums.

So since some are fighting an

    aspirational battle and others are

fighting a survival battle, clearly there

cannot be one common set ofsolutions for both. Being an active

    democracy, this becomes harder and

    more complex.

Some of us, who are privileged, must

    have the dual responsibility towards

competing and winning in the Global

    scenario yet helping the unprivileged.

    All Indian citizens must become

thought and action leaders and must

    India has been too long

    on the run way.

now our time has come to fly!!

not ask only of what their country

can do for them but must think of

how they can contribute to their

country. The likes of CII Yi and other

    such platforms are created as

    enablers of this very purpose.

The task at hand for the country is

    comparable to converting a large

desert with a few oasis in it to a

beautiful garden of global standards. To plant grass & trees all through

the desert, would almost be an

    impossible and never ending task.

Possibly, none or very few economies

would have those kinds of resources

    and funds to do so.

However, the task has to be done.

    Armed with enormous amounts of

    positive energy, enthusiasm,

    determination and clarity of vision,

the Thought and Action leaders could

create Oasis of excellence, in their

own areas of interest and expertise,

which must be capable of competing

    Globally. More importantly, these

    Oasis must Inspire, Motivate and

    Develop thousands of more thought

and action leaders to create many

more such oasis. These Oases while

    competing and winning globally must

also fulfill their ethical, moral and

    social obligations, within their own

    ecosystem and towards the country.

    Most Indians after going abroad,

    especially doctors, technical and IT

    professionals have created a certain

respect for all Indians. Also, created

new mini Indias in most parts of the

world. Indians are now perceived as

    being adaptive, articulate, intelligent,

    well educated, and hard working

    globally competitive professionals

This will lead to respect in other areasand opening of other opportunities

The time for Young Indians has come

India has been on the run way too

Long now the time has come to

    fly!

We must think of ourselves as

Thought & Action leaders with an

important mission at hand. India has

too long been on the runway. We

need to be the engineers, design &maintenance experts, pilots, crew

etc., who must make this aircraft

called India fly. And fly high!

    One Generation can change the

growth trajectory of a nation and we

must be this generation for India

With the world getting closer and

flatter, advantages will no longer in

the future be only with the powe

nations and companies but wouldalso be with the enterprising

individuals and teams who cross al

    boundaries and parameters. They wil

shape the new world. India must be

a significant player in this new world

We Young Indians from all over the

world must come together and must

make this happen! [Within the next

10-15 year so we can enjoy it too!

about us...Yi is a movement of vibrant Young Indians that seeks to integrate the voice of young

Indians. An integral part of CII, Yi is all about dreams, hopes and passion. Yis main

message is Country before Self and Pride and Patriotism. Yi believes that Young Indians

can contribute to the community and the society at large if there is a participative action

towards a shared vision for India. Yi has a stirring, action-oriented motto We can We

will. Yi aspires to become a large group of young Indians from different walks of life

playing an active role in the development of India. Being a fledgling organisation, just about

two years old, Yi is making significant progress towards its objectives. Currently there are

9 chapters across the country and Yi plans to open 6 more chapters in India as well as

4 international chapters in the next two years.
