WISE DAN WORKS TOWARD RETURNBy Claire Novak
A vacationing clocker meant the Aug. 17 move of
Wise Dan at Keeneland wasn't recorded, but
trainer Charlie LoPresti said the two-time Horse of
the Year's dirt breeze moved him closer to a likely
start in the Sept. 13 Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes
(Can-IT).
LoPresti's watch clocked the 8-year-old gelding
going six furlongs in 1:14 in company, galloping out
seven furlongs in 1:26 1/5.
Wise Dan, a two-time winner of the Woodbine
Mile and the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT), has not
raced since taking the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (gr.
IT) last October; he exited that race with a non-dis-
placed fracture at the bottom of his right front
cannon bone. He has worked five times since his
return to training, with another Breeders' Cup run
his ultimate target.
"He's got probably two more works, and then I'll
take him to Dr. (Larry) Bramlage right before he goes
to Woodbine," LoPresti said. "It's a'Win and You're
In' Breeders' Cup race, it's not a handicap... a lot of
things make sense about running there." BH

GLENEAGLES CAN'T ESCAPE THE RAINBy Madison Scott
Wednesday's Juddmonte International Stakes
(Eng-I) at about 10 furlongs at York was billed
as a Golden Horn-Gleneagles showdown, but the
anticipated match is in doubt due to—you guessed
it—ground. Rain Tuesday downgraded the going to
"good, good to soft in places" to the disadvantage
of Gleneagles' connections, who already passed on
both the Sussex Stakes (Eng-I) and Prix Jacques Le
Marois (Fr-I) due to soft ground.
Gleneagles' trainer, Aidan O'Brien, could delay
the final decision until race day. The trainer's son,
Joseph O'Brien, gets the mount on the 3-year-old
miler for the first time since being replaced by the
now-injured Ryan Moore in the English Guineas.
The nearly-six-foot jockey would try to make the
124-pound impost, though he hasn't ridden below
126 in the past 12 months.
The International has a stellar field even if Glen-
eagles drops out. Golden Horn's main challengers
are group I winners The Grey Gatsby and Criterion
and promising Royal Ascot winner Time Test. BH

CONSIGNORS GEARING UP FOR OBSBy Ian Tapp
For some in the bloodstock business, the
break between the Saratoga sales and
Keeneland September is a chance to catch
their breath. Not so for consignor Beth Bayer,
who just got back to Florida from Saratoga and
has 23 cataloged for the Aug. 25 Ocala Breed-
ers' Sales Co.'s August select yearling sale.
"Sometimes you hear people say they're
going to sit and wait for Keeneland, but it
won't be any easier to buy at Keeneland
because everybody's there," Bayer said.
"People are realizing they need to buy when
they find a nice individual, no matter where
it is."
Bayer mentioned an Awesome Again colt
and an Arch filly as two to watch in her con-
signment.
"I try to place horses where I think they'll
be in the top 10%," she said. "That's why some
Kentucky-sired yearlings are down here (at
OBS) because they'd be competing against
30-40 at Keeneland. You might have a slightly
lesser pedigree, but if you have a really good
individual, why not be a standout here?" BH
BEVERLY D. APPEAL LIKELYBy Frank Angst
Both Jamie Spencer and Ralph Beckett, the respec-
tive jockey and trainer of Secret Gesture, the mare
disqualified from first to third in the Beverly D. Stakes
(gr. IT) Aug. 15, expect the stewards' decision to be
appealed.
Qatar Racing and Newsells Park Stud's Secret Ges-
ture reached the wire in the Beverly D. 1 1/4 lengths
ahead of runner-up Watsdachances, but the stewards
ruled Secret Gesture had interfered with Stephanie's
Kitten in deep stretch. The disqualification followed
an inquiry and an objection from Stephanie's Kitten's
rider, Irad Ortiz Jr.
In his Aug. 18 blog for British betting group Coral,
Spencer said Secret Gesture came out late but should
not have been disqualified because she was clear of
Stephanie's Kitten. He said there "obviously will be an
appeal."
The DQ cost Secret Gesture, a 5-year-old daughter
of Galileo, what would have been her first grade I vic-
tory. Beckett said on Twitter Sunday he expected an
appeal to be filed. A posting on Qatar Racing's web-
site stated Secret Gesture was "denied a deserved
victory." BH

KY APPROVES COBALT THRESHOLDBy Ron Mitchell
After months of study, the Kentucky Horse
Racing Commission has given final approval to
regulations for the mineral cobalt and stiff penal-
ties for horses testing positive for levels over 50
parts per billion.
Cobalt occurs naturally in horses, but high lev-
els have become increasingly common in post-race
tests. Dr. Mary Scollay, the KHRC's equine medical
director, said cobalt may enhance performance
but the science to explain such effects in horses is
lacking.
Under the regulations approved Aug. 18, a pos-
itive test of 25 ppb would result in a warning and
fine, and the horse would be placed on the vet's
list. Levels over 50 ppb could result in as much as a
two-month suspension, up to a $1,000 fine, and/or
purse revocation.
Also, the commission extended the recom-
mended withdrawal time for flunixin to 32 hours
from 24 hours.
The new regulations must go through a regu-
latory process that could take up to six months
before being implemented. BH

HIGH SPEED FIGURES FOR FOURSTARDAVEBy Frank Angst
While the Arlington Million XXXIII Stakes (gr. IT)
offered the weekend's biggest purse, it did not
generate the top Equibase Speed Figure on a Satur-
day of big turf races coast to coast.
The Fourstardave Handicap (gr. IIT) at Saratoga
Race Course proved fastest as its top-three finishers
registered the weekend's highest figures, with win-
ner Grand Arch's 123 the best. Runner-up Ironicus
and third-place Seek Again earned 122s.
With four horses within 1 1/4 lengths of the win-
ner, the Fourstardave registered five of the top six
speed figures: Both fourth-place King Kreesa (grade
I-placed) and fifth-place
Mshawish (grade I win-
ner) were given a 121.
The Pizza Man earned
a 119 in winning the
Arlington Million, three
points less than the 122
registered by Highland
Reel in the Secretariat
Stakes (gr. IT). Both races
were contested at 1 1/4
miles on the Arlington
turf, and while the turf
was firm for the Secre-
tariat and yielding for
the Million, those factors
are accounted for in the
figures. BH

STALLIONS& BLOODSTOCK COMMENTARYwith Robert L. Losey, Ph.D.
EXPLOITING MARKET INEFFICIENCIESBy Robert L. Losey, Ph.D.
This week's column, like many others I'll write,
targets breeders and buyers on a budget. As
discussed last week, the stock market is relative-
ly efficient; nevertheless, it has anomalous situa-
tions that generate unusual returns. In addition
to its own peculiarities, the bloodstock market
has analogs to many of these anomalies.
Value stocks. Stocks with good "numbers"
(high cash flows and asset values and low price/
earnings ratios) are analogous to racing pros-
pects by sires that have higher percentages of
top-quality runners. Successful Appeal, with
8.0% SWs and 2.2% GSWs but only a $29,374
yearling average for 2014, is a classic "numbers"
sire. Another "value" criterion, deemed crucially
important by Joe Estes, is racing quality in the
dam. See the Rosenberg paper on rllosey.com
for an analysis that supports Estes' hypothesis
and yields additional insights as well.
Small cap bias. Small companies with few/no
analysts following them outperform large-cap
stocks. The greater numbers of analysts discuss-
ing large-cap stocks generate more buzz and
higher prices. Trainers and writers are blood-
stock equivalents of stock analysts—when they
see successful runners by a sire, they spread the
word and prices are bid up, often based on vol-
ume of runners whether or not associated with
the "numbers" described above.
Reversion to the mean. Mutual funds that
perform especially well for two or three years
are subsequently more likely to underperform.
Similarly, from a group of comparable proven
sires, by chance some will look like world-beaters
one year but are likely to revert to form (Devil
His Due, after Roses in May won the Dubai World
Cup; Flower Alley after Kentucky Derby winner I'll
Have Another). We all want to get in on the next
hot sire, but breeders and buyers who pay pre-
mium prices for hot sires are often overpaying.
Conversely, proven sires that are having an off
year are more likely to bounce back the following
year (especially if they have sufficient foals in the
pipeline). Arch, Awesome Again, and Mineshaft
are likely to look better in 2016.
Calendar (and sales placement) biases. If you
invest in common stocks for only two weeks
each year, make it late December/early January
when stocks historically generate abnormally
high returns.
Bloodstock markets also have time-related
anomalies. American University researchers
have shown that the first few hours of the
Keeneland September sale exhibit slightly lower
prices than should be expected when adjusted
for quality. There are other placement effects.
Phil Sims did his homework—but was probably
the beneficiary of an anomaly—when he bought
Don't Tell Sophia for $1,000 as Hip 2787 on Day
8 of the 2009 Keeneland September sale. This
Congaree filly would probably have sold better
later in the sale but was passed over by mid-sale
buyers looking for hotter sires than Congaree,
whose yearlings averaged only $9,139 that year.
Patient buyers who look for misplaced pedi-
grees at sales can hope to emulate Phil Sims. BH
