THE circuit - silverstone

Silverstone is a high-speed circuit with several famous fast corners which place big demands on tyre casings.

Finely-tuned aerodynamics are essential. Tyre-wear is medium-to-high and asymmetrical, while grip levels are quite low.

Rain can never be ruled out and temperatures are rarely very high.

“Silverstone has roughly the same number of right and left turns [10 and 8], but the demands they place on the tyres’ right and left

sides are very different. Practically all the fast corners, which are especially hard on tyres, are right-handers. We consequently recommend an asymmetric car set-up, especially their camber. Depending on the weather and what we see in free practice, we may even envisage the use of different types of tyre either side of the car. We will pay careful

attention to the degree and type of wear because the new tyre regulations mean the LMP1 cars will systematically need to double stint, and the LM GTE Pro cars will need to do the same for two-thirds of the race. On top of that, the weather can be quite changeable at Silverstone – free practice 3 was even cancelled due to snow last year!”

· The 6 Hours of Silverstone is this year’s RAC Tourist Trophy race. The trophy was presented for the first time in 1905

· Michelin has won all 41 FIA WEC races organised since 2012

· 10 years ago: Michelin won the 1,000km of Silverstone with Minassian/Gené (Peugeot 908 HDi)

· The new Toyota TS050 Hybrid and Porsche 919 Hybrid were unveiled at the recent FIA WEC Prologue at Monza, Italy

· The 2014 6 Hours of Silverstone was halted by rain with 30 minutes remaining

REGULATIONS

· FIA WEC grid orders are based on the average best qualifying times of each car’s two nominated drivers (six-hour races)

· LM P1 and LM GTE Pro cars may only use four sets of tyres for qualifying and the race, compared with six previously.
