Staff Reports Sales tax holiday set for this weekend Texas Comptroller Glenn Hagar announced the annual School Sales Tax Holiday will take place Friday through Sunday. The annual event exempts sales taxes on qualified school items, including clothing, foot- wear, school supplies and backpacks, priced below $100, which saves shoppers $8 per $100 they spend. “Even though signifi- cant uncertainty remains for our public and private schools as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the sales tax holiday is a per- fect opportunity to save money on school supplies and other tax-free items at a time when many Texans are carefully monitor- ing their family financ- es,” Hegar said. “Online shopping is covered, so I encourage all Texans to shop online or practice social distancing when making in-store purchas- es. Steph McDougal and Kelly Little, from Houston-based McDoux Preservation, will also make a presentation to the Main Street Advisory Board and the Historic Preservation Commission. The commission meeting will be at 4 p.m. Aug. 12 at City Council Chambers, 107 E. Kaufman St., and is open to the public. The McDoux consul- tants are updating the city’s historic resources survey for the downtown historic district. As a mem- ber of the National Park Service’s Certified Local Government program, the City of Paris is eligible for grants and other benefits from the Texas Historical Commission. Both the 2013 repairs to Paris’ City Hall and the 2009 design stan- dards for historic districts were paid for, in part, with CLG grant funds. To stay in the CLG program, cities agree to update their sur- vey data regularly. According to Cheri Bedford, the city Main Street coordinator and Historic Preservation offi- cer, the city’s most recent historic resources survey was completed in 2005. Bedford said the project is the first step toward moving all of Paris’ historic district information into the City’s Geographic Information System. Legacy survey data from 1980, 1985, 2005, and 2017 includes photo negatives, paper copies of survey forms, an Excel spreadsheet and digital pho- tographs. The survey data will eventually be digitized and moved into the GIS platform so information for each building, along with the most recent photograph, can be easily accessed by city staff and the public. Properties in the National Register Commercial Historic District can be eli- gible for state and federal tax credits, among other incentives. This survey will contain information for those interested in pursu- ing tax credits. Once information is in GIS, Bedford said, the city will be able to keep it up to date and will only need to take new photo- graphs every 10 years, sav- ing money down the road. BRIEFS | LOCAL BRIEFS | MEETINGS Paris to update historic downtown preservation data Waco couple to return on their new network LOS ANGELES Chip and Joanna Gaines are returning to “Fixer Upper” as they build their new network. The series, which made the couple do-it-yourself celebrities, will be part of their Magnolia Network set to launch next year. The series aired for five seasons, until April 2018, on HGTV. “These past few years, we’ve continued tackling renovations and projects, doing the work we’re pas- sionate about, but I don’t think either of us antici- pated how the show would become such a permanent fixture in our hearts,” they said in a statement. Two others shows were announced Tuesday for the Magnolia lineup. One showcases interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn, and the other fea- tures Texas entrepreneur Jonathan Morris telling the stories of “inspiring” small business owners nationwide, the network said. The Flynn project is untitled, with the work- ing title “Self Employed” attached to Morris’ show. Waco couple to return on their new network

LOS ANGELES — Chip and Joanna Gaines are returning to “Fixer Upper” as they build their new network.

The series, which made the couple do-it-yourself

celebrities, will be part of their Magnolia Network set to launch next year. The series aired for five seasons, until April 2018, on HGTV.

“These past few years, we’ve continued tackling renovations and projects, doing the work we’re pas-

sionate about, but I don’t think either of us antici-pated how the show would become such a permanent fixture in our hearts,” they said in a statement.

Two others shows were announced Tuesday for the Magnolia lineup. One showcases interior

designer Brian Patrick Flynn, and the other fea-tures Texas entrepreneur Jonathan Morris telling the stories of “inspiring” small business owners nationwide, the network said.

The Flynn project is untitled, with the work-

ing title “Self Employed” attached to Morris’ show.

Previously announced Magnolia series include “Bespoke Kitchens,” “Family Dinner” and “Restoration Road with Clint Harp.”
