FROM THE PRINCIPAL I think I would be correct in saying that we will have one of the largest representations of Siena students in the history of our involvement in the WALK FOR DANIEL on Friday – and that history has been since this important day began. We will have 146 students and 23 staff attending. This gives a strong message that Daniel’s memory is still very much alive but hopefully also affirms Bruce and Denise that their work in keeping our young people from harm is highly valued and respected. Hopefully there will also be an equally impressive turnout for the inaugural DANIEL MORCOMBE CUP game played between Year 10 teams from Siena and Mountain Creek, both schools that Daniel attended as he completed his primary schooling at Mountain Creek SS. Our team were presented with their jerseys and a polo shirt by the Federal member for Fisher Mal Brough (who is playing in the NRL Masters game after ours) and Garry Heath from ISC, who have supplied this sporting apparel. Also present was Siena parent Anthony Farquharson who has been the driving force for this new initiative. Best wishes to the boys and to Paul Clough who has been training this team. This Friday is WORLD TEACHERS DAY and it was most appropriate that our prayer at this week’s assembly focussed on the role of the teacher in students’ lives and how important they are to student futures. The staff at Siena give of themselves in so many ways to the growth of your children in those three dimensions we hold dear at Siena – Prayer-Care-Learning - and it was most gratifying to see this recognised and acknowledged by the students. Brisbane Catholic Education use this time every year to congratulate teachers who have reached milestones in their service to Catholic education and yesterday Kim and Peter Cook were recognised for their 30 years of dedicated service. Veronica Bayliss also announced to the students that she will be retiring at the end of the year and the student response indicated just how much she has been appreciated by them. Anne Forzatti, who is currently on leave, has also indicated that she will retire at the end of this year. Many groups to CONGRATULATE this week: The talent on display at MUSICA SIENA was very impressive. All of the groups – the strings, percussion, guitar and vocal ensembles, and the College Choir and Concert Band presented a quality and range of music that one would be happy to pay good money for. Congratulations students, and to your highly talented tutors who helped prepare you for the night, and in many instances, joined in – Maria Salmon, Helen Worthington, Inez Durrer, Donna Langford, Lyn Wordsworth, Basil Barletta and of course, Todd Wynyard who is the driving force behind out Instrumental Music Program for his exceptional organisation. Our SURF LIFE SAVING team took on all-comers at an interschool carnival and came away victorious. While we can’t lay claim to having developed this team into the powerhouse that it was, hopefully we can say that their desire to achieve for their school had some part in their performance. Relay results would certainly reflect this. BASKETBALL grand finals were held last week with mixed results and Water Polo has grand finals next Monday. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I think I would be correct in saying that we will have one of the largest representations of Siena students in the history of our involvement in the WALK FOR DANIEL on Friday – and that history has been since this important day began.

This Friday is WORLD TEACHERS DAY and it was most appropriate that our prayer at this week’s assembly focussed on the role of the teacher in students’ lives and how important they are to student futures. FROM THE APRE GPBS (Gather, Proclaim, Break, Send) is a website that aims to connect faith, liturgy and life. They have published a thought-provoking article for the upcoming All Saints Day - November 1st. Saints are Beatitude People As the gospel for celebrating All Saints Day, the Beatitudes suggest the many ways Christians through the centuries have embodied these sayings. They challenge us who belong to the communion of saints today to live in ways quite the reverse of profit-motivated values. The first beatitude asks that the saint be poor in spirit. It directs all of us to recognise the experience of the economically poor and to enter into the difficult condition of the poor, their powerlessness to influence social systems that keep them poor. The saint lives the “preferential option for the poor,” one of the principles of Catholic social teaching. The second beatitude calls us to accompany people in tragedy and sorrow, to be their comfort. The third beatitude asks saints to be meek. It promises the whole earth to those with little. Meekness in this beatitude actively recognises the injustice in which we can find ourselves, does not deny wrongs, and keeps working to make changes that will contribute to healing. The meek saint is not passive. The fourth beatitude challenges us to act from a deep spiritual realisation that all is not well in the world, not all have enough to survive let alone thrive. The saint that has an appetite for justice knows it demands action. Saints are merciful and will receive mercy, the fifth beatitude promises. The sixth beatitude is a challenge to see God in our lives, to be single-minded in our intention to act with love toward all of our neighbours. The sincere of heart live a deep interior life in communion with God. The seventh and eighth beatitudes call blessed not those with big salaries and no worries but those who work for peace and bear persecution. They challenge us to join in the work of bringing the reign of God to Earth. How lucky we are to have in Bernardino, Catherine, Mary, Frederic and Teresa, five House Patrons who so clearly live these Beatitude values and provide us with examples worthy of imitation.

FROM THE ICLT PROGRAM LEADER

LAPTOP COLLECTION 2015 Parents, please note the following arrangements for the laptops for the end of 2015:

Year 12 As advised in your letter from Mr Hight, students will return their laptops and chargers to the IT department before the conclusion of the year. At that time they will indicate if they wish to get their laptop back. If this is the case, programs on the device will be wiped and it will be reimaged with the programs it was purchased with. If devices are given in on time, these should be available for collection during the last week of school (30 November – 3 December). After this time, it will be assumed you no longer wish to collect the device and they will be donated to our sister school in Fiji.

Year 11 Students will return laptops to the IT department as soon as they have completed their final assessment tasks requiring the device (by 26 November at latest). These will be repaired and reimaged over the holiday break and returned to students on their return in 2016.

Years 7-10 This year we introduced a new program called Self Service which allows the IT department to push out updates to Mac devices without having to physically collect and reimage them. Due to this implementation, we will NOT be collecting ALL of the devices at the end of the year. Instead, we will be conducting checks on all devices in the coming weeks and looking for those that have unreported damage or software issues. Those students will be advised that we will be collecting their laptops before they complete the year for repairs and reimaging, with return of the laptops at the start of the 2016 school year. So for the vast majority of Year 7-10 students, they will keep their laptop over the holidays.

Please note though, these devices are not to be taken overseas if you are travelling on holidays as they are not covered under insurance for this. If you intend taking them, you will need to arrange your own coverage. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me ([email protected]). Mrs Anne Fenwick

FROM THE LEARNING ENRICHMENT PROGRAM LEADER Recently the Year 10 FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVING team competed at the National Finals in Brisbane on the topic of Human Enhancement. Congratulations to Tess Fitzpatrick, Holly Mitchell, Sophie Holzer and Shaun McAnally on their tremendous result. As a Year 10 team competing in the Year 10 – Year 12 Senior division, their booklet was scored 5th highest in the competition. This is a credit to this awesome team and a result of their outstanding preparation and commitment to the program – well done team!

On the same weekend, our Science/Engineering team competed at the OPTI-MINDS State Finals at the University of Qld. On Saturday, the students had to participate in a Youth Forum and ideas market where students had the opportunity to put forward their ideas for a better future. Then early on Sunday morning, the team were given their Science/Engineering challenge to solve and were put in lockdown for three hours on their own, under the supervision of a teacher from another school, to design their machine, write their script, make props and costumes and prepare their performance. In the afternoon we were blown away by their wonderfully creative solution to the challenge as well as their very entertaining and witty performance. Congratulations to Ruby Daly, Kerri-Ann Meakins, Sam Bolton, Liam Morey, Lauren Ward, Olivia Goodman and Mitch Santoro on their fantastic teamwork!

On Tuesday night this week, students doing Program Challenge in Semester 1 in 2016, and their parents, met to begin the process of sourcing mentors for our Mentorship Program next year. These students are encouraged to attend the earlier part of the Celebration Evening for the current cohort of PROGRAM CHALLENGE students on Thursday 5 November from 5pm to view their static displays and sit in on the first one or two presentations. FROM THE INDIGENOUS AMBASSADOR

Recently Peter Mulcahy, an indigenous artist, storyteller, historian and teacher spent three days at Siena. Peter is an inspiring and enthusiastic presenter who worked with many teachers in a variety of subjects. He helped introduce the Year 8 Science geology unit, using his (very heavy) collection of rocks used traditionally by local aboriginal people for tools, weapons and painting. Peter spoke to several senior R&E classes about Aboriginal spirituality, enthralled the Year 10s with the Aboriginal creation story of the Cooloola area, painted with art classes and even had a crack at romantic poetry with Year 12 English students. Feedback from teachers and students suggest the visit was an outstanding success and we hope to continue and extend this program. Mr Bill Kelly

Saturday morning training has also finished as the season is now at an end. A Huge thank you to Uros Kralj for taking these sessions, he has been incredible with the students throughout the season. Mr Josh Maudsley, Convenor BASKETBALL GRAND FINAL NIGHT What a great night for Siena Basketball as four teams battled it out in their respective Grand Finals. Teams that qualified were the Senior C Girls Grey, Senior C Girls Black, Senior D Girls White and Junior A Boys.

In the Junior A Boys game, everybody gave a good account of themselves but our smaller boys were out muscled by a bigger and taller team. The skill level was very high in this game and augers well for future Siena teams.

Mr Clough’s Senior D team had an easy win in the semi-final but found the Grand Final a little more difficult. More on this later in the newsletter.

Unfortunately, two Siena teams had to play each other in the Senior C Girls Grand Final with Siena Black the eventual winners. The spirit and comradery of both teams after the game was clearly evident and showed all observers “the essence of Siena”.

Overall, the night could be deemed a great success as all teams were great ambassadors for Siena and thoroughly enjoyed the hype of a Grand Final. Mr Bruce Fitzgerald, Convenor Senior Girls Div D White: Siena 26 def Grammar 18. Right from the very first whistle the girls made it clear that they wanted to win this grand final. That said, it was a closely fought game played in great spirit between two evenly matched teams. The difference on the night was our defence. The girls challenged every shot at goal by our opponents and chased the ball down court all game to ensure that any points scored against us were hard won. Well done ladies and thanks for a really enjoyable competition. We never struggled for numbers and your sense of fun was infectious. Thanks also to Mr Tony Hannan for getting you through the semi the previous week in my absence and to the supporters who turned up to cheer us on each week. Mr Paul Clough, Coach

DANIEL MORCOMBE CUP RUGBY LEAGUE As mentioned earlier in the newsletter, the inaugural Daniel Morcombe Cup is this Friday. Kick off time for the boys is 6.15pm at Kawana Sports Precinct - Field 1. The game follows a Sunshine Coast Barbarians v Mt Creek Open Boys match, beginning 5pm, and precedes the Kawana Dolphins v Beerwah Bulldogs NRL Masters game, due to start at 7.30pm. Entry is by gold coin donation and there will be face painting and jumping castles present on the night. The Year 10 boys have had a couple of training runs and are keen to throw the ball around. It should be a great game of footy but needless to say the result is secondary to the aim of raising awareness of child safety within our communities. Mr Paul Clough, Coach TOUCH Open Mixed Siena 6 def by Wii Not Fit 8. It was so good to have healthy numbers for a change and it showed against this team for whom we normally lose convincingly. Scores were even until very late in the game and our defence in particular was outstanding. Codi Jowett was on fire, scoring three, Grace Powell continued to steady the ship through structured play, Hayden Baker set up lots of attacking raids, Bronte O’Hara organised our defence with great talk, and Brayden Smith had a sound game. Mr Paul Clough, Coach
