Your gift is helping build a better Museum

THANK YOU FOR PREPARING YOUTH FOR THE STEM OPPORTUNITIES OF TOMORROW

In July 2015, The Boeing Company and Mrs. William E. Boeing, Jr. joined together to make an unprecedented $30 million philanthropic investment in the future of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education – the largest in The Museum of Flight’s50-year history. As a result, we createdthe Boeing Academy for STEM Learning, which will prepare today’s young peoplefor tomorrow’s STEM careers.

Despite its tech-driven economy, Washington state is predicted to have 45,000 STEM jobs go unfilled by 2017 due to a lack of qualified candidates.* The Museum is in an ideal position to address the need for diverse, talented, young STEM professionals.

The new Boeing Academy will provide the platform for the Museum to increase our STEM resources, and your gift will increase our STEM programs and resources for thousands of students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Because of your generosity, more schools can have a portable planetarium show right on their campus, and more demographics underrepresented in STEM careers - like students of color and women - can explore the scientificwonder that your Museum provides!

The Museum of Flight was started when a Boeing model 80-A was discovered in an Alaskan landfill 50 years ago and was restored to its former glory. Restoration and preservation have been an integral part of the Museum since the very beginning. The Restoration Center and Reserve Collection at Paine Field in Everett, WA was established in 1988, and is home to approximately three dozen aircraft in varying states of repair, plus completed aircraft and aviation artifacts on display to the public.

Your Inspiration Begins Here! investment will help the Museum tend to our most fragile and historically significant aircraft. It will also build a reserve fund to protect the collection, acquire important artifacts, and present our treasures in a way that continues to spark imaginations for generations to come.

Two significant campaign projects underway are the restoration of the rare 1933 Boeing 247D and the 1962 Boeing 727 prototype. The 247D is considered the first modern airliner,

RESTORING HISTORYand The Museum of Flight’s plane is one of four known to exist and the only one that is flyable.

In the 1960s, the 727 trijet ushered in a new era of flight for The Boeing Company. The original prototype joined the Museum’s collection in 1991 after nearly 64,500 hours of flight. After years of work by volunteers and staff, both the 247D and the 727 trijet will fly once more from the Restoration Center to the Museum’s Seattle campus in the early spring of 2016. Here they will join 17 other aircraft in their permanent home, the new Aviation Pavilion.

In addition to restoring these incredible planes, your gift to the Inspiration Begins Here! Campaign is enhancing the Restoration Center’s basic infrastructure to preserve special pieces of aviation history. Storm drainage, restrooms, hangar doors and safety enhancements are all scheduled for upgrades as part of the campaign.

expanding and improving the Museum’s Aviation Learning Center and John Fluke, Jr. Challenger Learning Center, where students experience simulated airplane flight and a mission to Mars. Scientific inquiry, problem solving and teamwork are practiced and applied in the Museum’s educational programs, where students can follow their passions. The Alaska Airlines Aerospace Education Center (AAAEC) was made possible

through generous campaign support like yours, and functions as a learning lab and college and career center all rolled into one. The AAAEC is a resource for students, educators, parents and volunteers as they explore their passions for flight. All of the Museum’s online education programs, including Washington Aerospace Scholars, Amelia’s Aero Club and Michael P. Anderson Memorial Aerospace Program, are part of the digital learning “hangar.” The Museum is committed to using these education opportunities to increase community outreach to women, students of color and low-income youth.

The Inspiration Begins Here! Campaign is also helping to make our exhibits more engaging for twenty-first century learners. The Museum is adding digital tablets that will provide visitors with virtual airplane tours, photos of Earth taken from space, and an interactive timeline of every space shuttle mission over the past 30 years.

SPARKING INSPIRATION IN OUR LEARNING CENTERSThe Museum’s education and learning centers encourage interests in aviation and aerospace, providing hands-on, engaging lessons with real-world applications. The Museum is an ideal environment where students actively pursue their interests in STEM field , and you’re helping us to make it even easier to explore history and imagine the future.

The new Aviation Pavilion building – the largest investment of the Inspiration Begins Here! Campaign – will be just a short walk across the skybridge from the J. Elroy McCaw Personal Courage Wing and the William E. Boeing Red Barn. Located on the west campus, between the Charles Simonyi Space Gallery and Raisbeck Aviation High School (RAHS), the Aviation Pavilion construction began in early April 2015. The Pavilion will house the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the B-17 Flying Fortress, the Air Force One, the Concorde airliner, the Museum’s recently-restored 747 Jumbo Jet, and the B-17, B-29 and B-47 bombers. The Aviation Pavilion will be home to 19 iconiccommercial and military aircraft when it opens to the pubic in the summer of 2016.

Designed by SRG Partnership, Inc. and built by Sellen, the new Aviation Pavilion will cover 3.2 acres, an area greater than two football fields. It will feature a roof that slopes from a height of 90 feet down to 55 feet.

The new facility will also feature exhibits about the history and future of aviation. “Building a permanent cover will help us protect these treasures of aviation history for generations to come,” said Doug King, President and CEO of The Museum of Flight. “Museum members and visitors will have access to these amazing airplanes rain or shine.”

Students at RAHS will have a bird’s eye view of the Aviation Pavilion, which will perfectly complement their aviation and aerospace-inspired STEM curriculum. The Aviation Pavilion will further reinforce this thriving relationship, physically linking the Museum and high school together.

Seth Margolis, Director of the William A. Helsell Education Department at The Museum of Flight, says, “All students and visitors will benefit from having historic aircraft in one place. It provides intimate exploration that enriches learning and will inspire kids. ” Your generosity means that more Museum visitors can get a close-up experience with groundbreaking pieces of aviation history.

BUILDING A PERMANENT HOME FOR EXTRAORDINARY AIRCRAFT

The Flight Zone is a popular destination inside the Museum for eager young flyers and their parents. Added to the Museum in 2000 and designed to excite kids ages 3-12 about aviation and science, the Flight Zone features child-sized interactivecockpits, working engine models, hang gliding simulators and a wind tunnel forhigh-speed aerodynamic experiments. Now, after 15 years of inspiring hundreds ofthousands of children, the Flight Zone is receiving a complete renovation - thanksto your incredible generosity!

With cutting edge STEM curriculum, the reimagined Flight Zone will be an educational and fun environment for families to enjoy. Your investment in the Inspiration Begins Here! Campaign could not have come at a better time - currently only 25% of South King County youth meet Washington state’s 5th grade science standards, and this percentage is even lower for low-income students and students of color.

Early childhood research shows that experiential learning is a necessary foundation to excel in STEM subjects. The improved Flight Zone will include visual, kinesthetic and auditory components to encourage learning, exploration and curiosity among the Museum’s youngest visitors.

Flight Zone features will be more accommodating for those whom English is not their first language. Interactive displays will also be reconfigured to be more accessible for young children. Using interactive, play-oriented exhibits, the innovative Flight Zone will provide an even better environment for both parents and children visiting this popular and inspiring part of the Museum.
