THE HARD SELL: No one is more dedicated to the cause. I insist on giving the entire operation 24/7 thought and effort to hold our team to the highest standards. Even as a freelancer, I have stopped work being delivered that wasn’t up to par. (It got me some looks, but the job went out as it should have.) Almost no one actually enjoys managing workflows and problem solving the way I do. They are both puzzles waiting to be solved. I also think it’s very important to keep the ROI in mind during any process. Everything should be done to make a profit, to benefit the client and studio. Profit these days also includes some intangables: personal relationships with clients and coworkers, among other things. You can’t leave the emotional attachment out. This is ART not SCIENCE.

THE PARTICULARS: For the sake of argument, please assume that I excel at the responsibilities listed. It’ll save me from having to reach for Roget’s Thesaurus to look up all sorts of new adjectives. I’m sure you’ve read them all before. Thanks!

THE CURRENT STORY

Management: Managers are team members like everyone else, just a slightly wider job description. Management is knowing which trench to jump into. Leading is not commanding. Leading is motivating. As a manager I like to think of myself as a buffer for the team. Supporting and encouraging the group towards our goal. Rounding up the resources, allowing members to focus on their expertise. Dealing with people, internally and externally, understanding that “personalities” are always involved. Knowing each team member’s strengths and weaknesses, their likes and dislikes.

“People” includes clients, freelancers, vendors, and other departments of any studio. Good relationships with all of them makes for a much smoother operation from one day to the next and should anything unforeseen pop up.

Workflow management makes for a smoother operation by managing people’s actions, file handling, who does what when, identifying pitfalls in advance. This also includes server structure and file handling. All assets must be in place, ready to go when they are needed. Everyone knowing where to find what they need saves time. What’s the final use? Will it be only print or electronic? If it’s RGB for electronic formats will it print? All important things to know before a project even begins. Please and thank you count big.

The Techno Stuff: I’m proficient in all design and production apps in Creative Suite. I began with Photoshop v1.0.7 and Illustrator 88. QuarkXpress was the lead in desktop publishing. InDesign is my program of choice now for it’s integration with the rest of the suite and the ability to output digital or print media. Filemaker Pro, Retrospect, Remote Desktop, Microsoft Office, most FTP programs, and a host of utility programs all round out the picture. I know Macintosh systems best but can work with Windows systems. Ethernet and most wireless protocol systems of networking, along with TCP/IP, FTP, VPN etc. I’m experienced with almost every form of in-house printing, networking, color management, maintenance.

Problem Solving: Who doesn’t love a good mystery? It’s a place for creative thinking. It’s a place for solutions. It’s a place for new ideas and methods. Where are the pitfalls? How do we make problems stand out and easy to catch in advance?

From Napkin To Final Print On About Anything And Electronic Media: Give me the gist of what you’d like and I’ll take it from there. I have experience with design, layout, revisions, copywriting, presentation, revisions, photography, digital imaging, retouching, revisions, color fidelity to SWOPv2 standards, 1-8 color and spots, revisions, page assembly, typography, revisions, pre-flight, delivery, film output and direct to plate, just about every form of printing, press checks, and deliverables. (Too late for revisions.)

Deliverables: Including direct mailings, catalogs, FSIs, brochures, lots of forms of financial printing, annual reports, convention banners and handouts. I’ve created many OOH materials: Banners, billboards, signage, indoor and outdoor exhibitions. I’ve covered the sides of buildings for Disney, The Shedd Aquarium, Terlato Wines International, The Chicago White Sox and many others. Trucks, trailers and other vehicles for mobile advertisement displays have all figured into the process.

Print is my strongest area. I know what resources are needed for web, other electronic media, 3D texturing & modeling, rendering, etc. I have experience supervising their creation.

Photography/Digital Imaging: Digital imaging began with desktop scanners and laser scans from the separator for final print. Film began to phase out in favor of digital photography. I began the digital photography push at Big Deahl productions in 1993. Big Deahl used a Leaf Digital Back on Sinar P3 cameras. I’ve also used Sinar backs and M3 cameras, Dicomed Big Shot 3Ks and Field Pro scanning backs.

References: This is where the usual “references” tag line goes. Just ask! I have any you could want, right on the other end of a phone call, text, e-mail, etc.

THE BACKSTORY

The Good(?) Ole Days: Production was spending days trying to produce printable art all while not cutting yourself with Xacto knives, drawing straight, clean rule lines with disagreeable Rapidograph pens, spending hours in a darkroom developing film and making photostats, Veloxes, newspaper screens, etc. All this had to happen with a low grade buzz and headache caused by all sorts of solvent based adhesives.

The Not So Ole Days: The pride and craftsmanship are always there. I began adapting the “good ole” methods to the Macintosh in 1991. No knives, adhesives, or ink stains. Just concentrate on the screen in front of you, the same attention to detail, intense learning of new media and methods. How to apply the older skills with new tools?
