The Start of World War I
• World war I started in the Balkans.
• On June 28, 1914, archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife were murdered in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
America Enters the War
• At the start of World War I, President Wilson had declared the neutrality of the United States.
• The sinking of the Lusitania and other German actions against civilians drew American sympathies to the Allies.
Celebration Time
• Cheering the end of world war I, on Nov. 11, 1918.
• The long, horrible war had taken the lives of nearly 10 million soldiers.
Axis Powers
• Germany, Italy, and Japan formed an alliance known as the Axis. Six other nations eventually joined the Axis.
General Eisenhower Speaks
• Talking to his men, general Dwight D. Eisenhower, commander of the Normandy invasion, wished paratroopers luck before they dropped behind German lines in France on d-day.
The Air War
• During world war II the B-24 bombers were used to strike factories, railroads, and other industrial targets.
Unification of East Germany and West Germany
• Oct. 3, 1990, millions of Germans celebrated throughout the country, including these people at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate.
