The Start of World War I

• World war I started in the Balkans.

• On June 28, 1914, archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife were murdered in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

America Enters the War

• At the start of World War I, President Wilson had declared the neutrality of the United States.

• The sinking of the Lusitania and other German actions against civilians drew American sympathies to the Allies.

Celebration Time

• Cheering the end of world war I, on Nov. 11, 1918.

• The long, horrible war had taken the lives of nearly 10 million soldiers.

• World War II began on Sept. 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland.
