IBS Young Scientist (YS) and Senior Scientist (SS) Programs
The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) is a newly established research institute in Korea that aims to brighten the future of humankind through basic-science research.
The IBS is the main organization in the Interna-tional Science and Business Belt (ISBB), a proj-ect established in Daejeon City, the Science hub of Korea, in November 2011. Our aim at the IBS is to become a dream research institute for world-class scientists, where they can enjoy the utmost freedom in conducting their research projects. We are convinced that an open and autonomous re-search environment promotes maximum scientific innovation.
The IBS aims to bring together world-leading sci-entists and young researchers so that they can carry out collaborative research projects with a shared passion and unwavering commitment. To this end, we shall recruit principal investigators based primarily on their excellent scientific cre-dentials and creative ideas, rather than on pre-determined goals and demonstrable outcomes.
All of us at the IBS are fully committed to creating a world-class research institute by promoting global scientific knowledge and by fostering the next generation of scientific leaders. We firmly believe that the future of humankind will be shaped and enhanced through research into basic science.
Thank you.

IBS Young Scientist (YS) and Senior Scientist (SS) Programs
1. Introduction• The YS and SS programs are designed to serve as breeding grounds for the next generation
of leaders in basic-science research, and to recruit them as IBS researchers.• YSs and SSs will get the opportunity to conduct collaborative research with outstanding
IBS researchers in an open and autonomous research environment. YSs should have great scientific potential; SSs should be skilled and seasoned professionals.
2. Areas of Research• The YS and SS programs recruit candidates from the research areas within which IBS re-
search centers are currently conducting research. Candidates may choose more than two research centers in the desired research area.
3. Qualifications• All applicants should be able to competently conduct research that delivers synergic ben-
efits with IBS research centers, and/or could lead to the discovery of new research areas.• All applicants should be capable of undertaking adventurous and innovative research tasks.• Applicants for the YS program should have less than 5 years’ experience after obtaining their
Ph.D. degree; applicants for the SS program should have more than 5 years’ experience after obtaining their Ph. D. degree.
• Applicants who are affiliated with other institutions must take a leave of absence from them while working on IBS projects.
4. Governance• YSs and SSs should be affiliated with their respective IBS research centers. However,
they will be guaranteed independence in the organization and operation of small research groups.
• The research groups should be located at their respective research centers; however, if research space is unavailable, YS and SS programs can instead be based at other locations.
5. Support Period & Amount of Funding• YSs will receive support for 3 years initially, which can be extended up to 5 years (3 years +
2 years) upon evaluation.• SSs will receive support for 2 years initially, which can be extended up to 3 years (2 years +
1 year) upon evaluation. Further funding will be determined via an interview-style evaluation: YSs will be evaluated in their third year; SSs will be evaluated in their second year.
• Successful YS candidates will receive annual research funding of up to KRW300 million*. Successful SS candidates will receive up to KRW500 million*.
* Labor costs are included in the research funding.
6. Organization of Research Group • YSs and SSs organize research groups independently within the funded research budget.• Research groups will be comprised of research fellows, researchers, and graduate students
(and, if necessary, administrative/engineering staff.) ※ Research personnel will be hired for non-tenure-track positions; administrative/engineering staff will be fixed-term workers.
7. Employment Status & Work Level• YSs and SSs will enter into an employment contract as non-tenure-track research fellows of IBS.
8. Research Conditions• YSs and SSs should work as full-time IBS employees.• YSs are permitted to participate in non-IBS projects three years after enrolling in their pro-
gram; SSs can participate in non-IBS projects two years after enrolling in theirs.
9. Selection Process• Candidates will be recruited via an open invitation and reviewed by evaluation committees.
10. Performance Evaluations• All YS and SS programs are subject to evaluations before they are completed.• Evaluation committees will conduct written and on-site evaluations, and the results of
these evaluations may be taken into account when YSs and SSs apply for permanent IBS research positions.
11. Schedule for 2013• Applications deadline: August 30, 2013• Evaluation period: September 1, 2013 ~ September 30, 2013• Research projects to be launched: November 1, 2013 The IBS may change the schedule if
necessary. YS/SS may alter the start date of research projects upon agreement of the IBS.
