I was appointed in March by Governor Rick Scott to fill this position due to former Supervisor of Elections, Kay Clem’s resignation. I am truly honored and humbled to receive this appointment from Florida’s Governor. On November 8th, 2011 the Elections office will conduct city council elections for the cities of Fellsmere, Sebastian and Vero Beach. Although municipal elections may be smaller in size than Primary and General Elections, they too are significant, and the amount of energy and time it takes preparing for them still remains high. Questions regarding municipal elections should be directed to the municipality’s city clerk. If you would like to request an absentee ballot for the up- coming elections, please go to our website at www.voteindianriver.com or call our office at 226-3440. When submitting your absentee ballot request make sure we have your correct mailing address. Per Florida Law, absentee ballots are not forwardable by the post office. Redistricting is a word you will be hearing a lot during the next two years. After the 2010 census results were com- puted, Florida gained an additional two seats in the U.S. House of Representatives for a total of twenty-seven statewide. It is up to each individual state to draw its own congressional and legislative boundaries. This process is called redistricting and it involves adjusting established electoral district boundaries in response to population shifts. A legislative district, precinct boundary or polling place may need to be changed. It is our job at the Supervisor of Elections office to work with our county commission and school district, along with the Senate and House Reapportionment Committees to map out the voting precincts in our County. Relocation of a polling place is never taken lightly by the elections office, but may be necessary based on the outcome of re- districting, or the loss of use of a building for various rea- sons, or the need to consolidate polling places for budget reduction purposes. Voters will be notified of any pre- cinct or polling place changes by the receipt of an updated voter information card. Any registered voter may request an Absentee Ballot or vote at a designated Early Voting site, in lieu of going to their assigned polling place on Election Day. If you haven’t checked out our updated website, it is up and running. The site, www.voteindianriver.com is de- signed in response to the election information needs of the residents of Indian River County. The new sample ballot tab gives voters the ability to access “precinct specific” sample ballots, acquire information on where to vote on Election Day, and upcoming elections applicable to each voter’s precinct. Voter’s will also be able to request an absentee ballot, review and update their registration infor- mation, check the status of their absentee ballot and re- view their voting activity for the past 12 months. With easy access to forms and information, voters are now able to obtain information on-line without the assis- tance of elections staff personnel. Forms that are avail- able on-line include voter registration forms, change of address and name forms, data request forms for candi- dates, and absentee ballot request forms. The many web- site enhancements allow the Elections office to dissemi- nate information 24 hours a day and better serve the needs of Indian River County voters. As a reminder, our 2011 Voter’s Guide and Government Officials Guide are also available on our website. Whether you are a first-time voter, a new voter to the state of Florida, or a seasoned voter, these guides contain information to help you be- come an effective and empowered voter. We are always looking for Election Day workers. If you are interested in becoming a poll worker, please visit our website or call our office at 772-226-3444 to sign up for an orientation class. Remember “Your Vote Is Your Voice, Speak Up!” If you would like to “make the front page” of our newslet- ter, make sure you schedule time this month at one of our networking activities, and maybe your name will be draw for the monthly spotlight! Hello, I am Leslie Swan, the new Supervisor of Elections in Indian River County.

Tourism Tidbits By Nicole Capp Holbrook

The Chamber has a Tourism Committee that meets on a quarterly basis and it is com-prised of Chamber members that are in the tourism industry. The purpose of the commit-tee is to create new ideas on how to pro-mote tourism in the Sebastian River Area that will benefit our community. The meet-ings are also an opportunity to brainstorm ideas and network with other tourism busi-nesses throughout the community. The Tourism Committee will meet one more time this year and if you are a tourism re-lated business, you won’t want to miss it! We have two great speakers coming to talk to our group: Jennifer Coto from VISIT FLOR-IDA and Barbara Riley from Booking.com. Jennifer is going to talk to us about what VISIT FLORIDA is working on, their free list-ing opportunity, and what we can do to make the Sebastian River Area stand out on VISITFLORIDA.com. Barbara is going to talk to us about Booking.com, Europe’s leading online hotel reservation site and how we can receive FREE marketing and target interna-tional visitors. We will also be doing a drawing for a chance to win the “Tourism Business Spotlight” fea-tured in the Chamber Currents. We will be drawing 3 winners; one for December, Janu-ary & February. The meeting will take place on Monday, Oc-tober 17th at 5:30 p.m. at the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce. With season just around the corner, I en-courage all of our tourism businesses to at-tend. If you would like more information, please contact me at (772) 589-5969 or email [email protected].

What would you do with a chance to introduce your-self to every new member that joined the Chamber. What a great opportunity to build a new relationship and network with businesses in your area. That is what our Ambassador Team Members get to do every month. As an Ambassador your du-ties are to: • Assist new members at events and introduce them to other members of the chamber • Contact new members each month and invite them to functions • Serve as hospitality or greeters at chamber events • Attend an Ambassador Committee Meeting monthly one hour before the luncheon. The benefits of being an Ambassador are: • Positive exposure and name recognition for you and your business • Ambassador Ribbon classifying you as a team member • Opportunity to receive Ambassador of the Year award • Win prizes throughout the year. We are looking for more members to join our Am-bassador Team. If you have any questions or would like to join our next meeting call 772-589-5969. Did you know….. Word of Mouth is the best referral system. When you eat at a great restaurant and tell someone about it, that is a word of mouth referral. You know at least 10 business owners that we may never come into contact with and you can let them know that you are a Chamber Member by telling them about it. We Love Our Chamber Members! Any tips from your business trade is appreciated so we can share them with all of our chamber members. Please email me at [email protected].

October, 2011 Beth L. Mitchell, Executive Director

One of the most basic principles for making and keeping peace in confrontations is that there should be an honest attempt at the reconciliation of differences before resorting to combat. We hope that the distractions on the riverfront will be resolved soon, so that our businesses can get down to doing what they do best, and prepare for the upcoming season with renewed spirit and energy. There is much to be excited about on In-dian River Dr., and in the Sebastian area, plenty for our visitors and community to enjoy. And hey, what about those elephants in Fellsmere? And wait until you see the Frog Leg t-shirts this year! With the Clam-bake weekend closing in on us in the first week of November, we are looking forward to the beginning of season, cooler weather and plenty of visitors! The Chamber’s annual Lifestyle and Media Auction, in its 18th year, was once again a great event, with plenty of fun and great advertising packages and places to stay, things to do, and an awesome venue. We’ve thanked everybody in the insert with the newsletter, and I encourage you to take note of the long list of businesses that participated, the generosity and support is greatly appreciated. I personally want to thank our Chamber team, Britney Faulk, Nicole Holbrook and Kim Cerreto, they did a yeoman’s job and any successes are only achieved with their great team work. This month we have breakfast here at the chamber office, hosted by one of our home based businesses, No More Before. We encourage other businesses that might not have a convenient location to consider crea-tive places to have a breakfast, and let us know if you want to bring the Chamber folks to you! October 19 the Chamber’s Legislative/Government Affairs Committee will again sponsor a City Council Candidates forum at the Sebastian City Hall. The forum will also be televised for the Sebastian voters. We look forward to thoughtful questions and answers, and discussions on the issues that are important to the community and the businesses in the area. We join Waste Management out in Fellsmere at Marsh Landing Restaurant for a fabulous lunch, hopefully Susan will serve up the MeeMaw Peach Cobbler for dessert, and we are looking forward to the United Way representatives bringing their message of “giving to the community” to our lunch attendees. As I mentioned above, now is the time that our tourism businesses are preparing for the up and coming season, and the Chamber follows suit. We will be reorganizing and rearranging some of our floor space at the Visitor’s Center in October to create a more inviting welcome space for the 5,000 visitors that will be coming through our doors. I mention this to remind you that brochures, business cards and goodies are a great way to have your business introduced to these visitors, and we can always use your materials! Please check and see if you have these items in our inventory, with over 450 members, it is difficult to reach out to everybody, but we have plenty of space. So, help us help you. Stop by and bring your stuff with you! Looking forward to 75 degree weather! Have a prosperous month!
