2. Illumia 7+1 colour LED face mask

The Illumia face mask is a wearable LED face mask that provides a non-invasive LED light cosmetic treatment designed to help promote skin rejuvenation, reduce the appearance of pigmentation, wrinkles and acne.

The Illumia face mask is designed to deliver light directly to the skin, ensuring maximum exposure with a choice of light in 7 different colours plus the infrared region of the light spectrum for the targeted action you want.

3. Product description

The Illumia face mask consists of a flexible silicon mask containing 66 light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and controller.

The mask is worn over the face and is held in place by adjustable straps - allowing the LEDs to deliver light directly to your skin, ensuring maximum exposure with your choice of light.

The controller switches the LEDs ON/OFF and contains a rechargeable battery. The required LED light modes are chosen via the controller.

4. Contraindications, warnings and precautions

Contraindications

• Do not use the Illumia face mask to treat any other conditions apart from those listed for use.

• Do not use the Illumia face mask when you have skin problems such as lupus erythematosus, photosensitive eczema, albinism or cancerous lesions as you may cause a severe skin reaction.

• Do not use if you have light induced headaches or migraines.

• Do not use if you have a history of seizures triggered by light. Some light wavelengths may cause seizures.

• Do not apply the face mask to the thyroid gland area in the neck.

• Do not use if you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant or breastfeeding as the device has not been tested on pregnant or breastfeeding women.

• Do not use if you are taking any medications that can cause photosensitivity as you may cause a severe skin reaction. Photosensitivity is a common side effect of various medications including some antibiotics, systemic or topical steroids, some acne treatments (such as isotretinoin), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and diuretics – check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you are unsure about the medications you are taking.

We recommend that you seek medical advice before using the device if you have any doubts or concerns.

Warnings

Stop using the Illumia face mask if you encounter any prolonged skin redness or discomfort that lasts for more than 2 hours. If a problem occurs for more than 2 hours you might be light sensitive or have another condition. We recommend you consult with a medical professional for advice.

• Always attach the USB port to the plug adaptor first, before plugging into the mains electricity supply.

• Store the Illumia face mask flat.

• Do not store the Illumia face mask where it can fall or be pulled into water or liquid. If the device falls into water or liquid, unplug immediately.

• An Illumia face mask that has been submerged in water may no longer work and could be broken.

• Do not use the Illumia face mask while in the bath or in the shower.

• Keep the cord away from heated surfaces.

• Do not use the Illumia face mask if it has been damaged or appears to have a damaged cord or plug.

• Do not tamper or attempt to disassemble the Illumia face mask as this may cause damage to the unit.

• This device is not designed for use by children.

• If the device begins to overheat, turn off immediately.

• Keep away from flammable liquids, aerosol products or where oxygen is being administered.

Precautions

Before using the Illumia face mask you must carry out a light sensitisation test (see section 6).

Stop using the Illumia face mask if you experience any adverse effects or have a concern regarding the device. Seek medical advice if you think you may be light sensitive.

• Use the Illumia face mask only for its intended purpose as described in the user guide.

• Do not use the Illumia face mask with eyes open and do not look directly into the light source while in operation.

• Do not shine the light source into your own or someone else’s eyes.

• Do not use the Illumia face mask if you have increased sensitivity to light.

• Do not use the Illumia face mask where other devices which intentionally radiate electromagnetic fields and energy in an unshielded manner. Medical electrical equipment can be affected by portable or mobile radio-frequency communication equipment.

• Do not scratch, damage or otherwise tamper with the light-emitting (LED) surface.

• Failure to use the Illumia face mask in accordance with the user guide instructions will invalidate the warranty.

• Read all instructions prior to using this device.

• Inspect the Illumia face mask before use, in case of damage.

• Transport and store the Illumia face mask in a manner listed in this user guide.

5. How to use the Illumia face mask

The Illumia face mask can be used when it is plugged into either the rechargeable battery or a mains outlet if the battery is not charged.

5.1 Charging the battery

Before use it is important to fully charge the Illumia face mask battery.

To charge the battery:

• Insert the micro-USB cable into the controller.

• Insert the USB connector into the USB port of the power supply.

• Insert the power supply into a suitably grounded outlet and switch on.

• When fully charged the battery light indicator on the controller will change from red to green.

• When the battery is fully charged the mask can be used approximately 8 times (8 x 10 minute sessions).

Caution: Although there are eye holes that allow the user to see through the face mask – users are required to wear the eyewear provided at all times when using the face mask – do not look directly into the light source. Cotton wool pads can be used underneath the eyewear for extra comfort during the treatment.

5.2 Using the Illumia face mask

Instructions for use:

1. Before starting the treatment, thoroughly cleanse your skin, remove all make-up and any cosmetics that may contain reflective materials.

2. Make sure the Illumia face mask is plugged into either the rechargeable battery or into a mains outlet.

3. Feed the velcro straps through the inlet holes located at the sides of the mask, making sure the velcro can be stuck to the back of the straps.

4. You are now ready to start – place the device over your face (with the light diodes next to your skin) and secure in position with the velcro straps, making sure the mask sits comforatably on your face.

5. To turn the Illumia face mask on, push the ON/OFF button for 1-2 seconds on the controller (and push again to turn it off if required).

6. Select the desired light mode on the controller – simply push the mode button to cycle through the 11 modes to the desired treatment.

Do not look directly into the light source when in operation.

The Illumia face mask is designed to be used for a maximum of 10 minutes a day. All eleven treatments are timed to shut down after 10 minutes.

7. When you are finished, clean the Illumia face mask with a water-based wipe or a damp clean cloth. Do not clean while the device is charging.

Caution: If you switch between colours/modes during a session the timer will restart at 10 minutes. Over treating is not advised, as the treatment will be ineffective.

5.3 Treatment recommendations

• For best results we recommend 3-5 x 10 minute treatments per week (with 2 days rest) for a minimum of 12 weeks.

• Maintenance treatments can then be carried out as required once the desired results are achieved.

6. Light sensitivity test

You must follow the instructions below before your first treatment session to see if you are light sensitive:

• Secure the Illumia face mask to your face, allowing the LEDs to deliver light directly to your skin.

• Turn the Illumia face mask on (see instructions on page 11) – and wear for 5 minutes. At any time if your skin feels HOT or uncomfortable STOP using the device immediately.

• Wait for 24 hours.

• If you experience pain, discomfort or redness that lasts for more than 2 hours you might be light sensitive. Please consult a doctor for advice.

7. Care and maintenance

Cleaning:The Illumia face mask should be cleaned after each use. Although the Illumia face mask is splash resistant, it should not be submerged in liquid.

Make sure the Illumia face mask is unplugged and turned off. Then use a damp, soft cloth with a mild alcohol-free cleaning detergent to clean the facial area. Repeat until the mask is clean and then dry with a clean dry cloth.

Do not use alcohol or harsh chemicals or any acidic cleaning materials to clean the Illumia face mask as these may damage the mask and affect how it works.

Storage and handling: Take care when storing your Illumia face mask. We recommend storing the face mask FLAT in the protective box provided or on a clean, dry, flat surface when not in use.Never bend the Illumia face mask where the silicon mask meets the cable – this may damage your mask and void your warranty.

Always adjust your face mask using the head straps, never the cord that connects the mask to the controller.

Avoid tugging, pulling or bending the cord that connects the face mask to the controller.

Disposal: Do not dispose of any part of the Illumia face mask at a domestic waste facility.

This device should be disposed of at an appropriate collection site according to national or local regulations – not in household waste.

8. Troubleshooting

• The Illumia face mask does not come on: Please check that all the plugs are inserted properly; the battery is charged or plugged into the mains.

• The Illumia face mask seems to flicker: Please check that all the plugs are inserted properly.

• The Illumia face mask is hot: This is normal; the face mask becomes hot during a treatment that is designed to open the pores of the skin. If the face mask becomes too hot, please turn off and wait for it to cool down.

If the actions suggested fail to fix the problem, or the problem reoccurs, and your device is within the warranty period, please return to your provider.

Do not attempt to investigate any further or modify the device in any way.

The Illumia face mask has NO parts you can repair yourself.

9. Disclaimer

Results and effects in general are temporary and cosmetic. A consistent regimen of product usage, together with proper diet and hydration is recommended to achieve and maintain desired results.

Smoking and alcohol consumption are not recommended and may have limiting effects on results. The Illumia face mask is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions or in the cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease, nor are they intended to affect the structure or function of the body.

Actual results will vary according to skin type, amount of usage, genetic influences, diet, exercise, lifestyle, environment, etc.

All Illumia research is based on open-source clinical studies on the efficiency of light and LED therapy, though we cannot guarantee results – clinical studies show that light therapy is an effective treatment for a number of skin imperfections.
