Your club can sponsor an obstacle for the ride and post a club sign to promote your club. Please contact a member of the 4-H Team for additional information or to find out how to sign up your club. Living History Day at The Rural Heritage Museum On Saturday, October 19 th take a step back in time. 4-H News & Views Promote you club and your Pride: October 7 - 11

This week is designated as National 4-H Week where 4-H Clubs, leaders and programs are encouraged to

share their knowledge of 4-H with others including youth and families not already involved in 4-H. Some

great ways to share your pride is to wear a 4-H T-shirt to school, invite a friend to your club meeting during

the month of October, volunteer to read stories at your local library or set up a presentation at an afterschool

club or other community organization/event.

Another great way to promote your club and support the 4-H program during National 4-H Week would be to

sponsor an obstacle for St. Jude’s Trail Ride on Saturday, October 5th.

WWII Youth Event Once again, the 4-H Youth Development Program will be

participating in the WWII & USO Event in Williamsport October

12-13, 2013. This is an event open to the public to engage in a variety

of activities to learn about life during the war years, both for those on

the front lines, but also on the home front.

The 4-H Program will provide activities and information about the

impact of 4-H Clubs on the war effort, as well as, the effect the war

had on youth during the 1940’s. Activities will include:

a scavenger hunt for “junk” that would have been collected for the

war effort (rubber, plastic and the like)

Victory Garden poster creation and V-mail letter writing

learn about WWII life on the home front from a child’s perspective

play a WWII era game or with a WWII era toy

The 4-H Program is looking for interested youth, clubs and adults to assist with the presentation of this

outreach event. Interested assistants will need to dress in WWII era clothing appropriate for their age group.

Strengthening Leadership in Adults & Teens

November 22nd-November 24th

Ocean City, MD

This event provides time to meet other 4-H families and learn more about all the wonders of the 4-H program.

It is an excellent opportunity for teen and adult volunteers to learn the knowledge and skills necessary to be

successful leaders in their local 4-H programs.

There are classes offered in environmental sciences, camping, animal sciences, leadership, volunteer

development, human sciences, SET, and many other exciting topic areas.

check about the availability of a Forum Scholarship.

4-H Advisory Committee- Membership is open to anyone interested in helping to steer the 4-H Youth Development

2013 4-H Recognition Night Committee- Membership is open to any youth, leader, parent, volunteer or adult

interested in assisting with the preparation and production of the annual Recognition Night event to be held on

Saturday, April 12th, 2014.

• Tuesday, February 11th from 6:30-7:30

4-H Record Book Rally Dates

Registrations are now open for the following Record Book Rally dates!

These sessions will provide participant’s access to electronic copies of the Record Book forms via the use of laptops computers or in paper form, as well as, the ability to ask questions and receive direct assistance with their individual forms from the 4-H Team and expert volunteers. Learn the importance of the Record book to the 4-H Program, work with your 4-H peers and have fun doing it!

Fall Paper Clover Fundraiser Coming in October 2013

Fall Paper Clover will be October 9-20, 2013. During this fundraiser, Tractor Supply Company asks

customers to donate $1 to support 4-H. 70% of the collected funds support the local and state 4-H programs

where they were raised. Talk to your local TSC store and ask how your club can get involved to help raise

money.

Attention All Members who sold in the 2013 Market Sale

Everyone who sold an animal in the 2013 Market Sale will be receiving two pictures. One copy of the

picture is for you, the other is to be delivered to the buyer. Remember that personal contact is a way to

build lasting relationships with your buyers.

Livestock Skillathon Got Livestock? Or maybe just interested in learning?

Livestock Skillathon is a program where you will learn about producing sheep, goats, swine and cattle. There

will be learning sessions starting in November where you will learn about equipment, feeds, breeds, meat cuts

and much more! You do not have to raise livestock or carry a livestock project to come and learn! There is a

Maryland State Skillathon contest held in March, where you may choose to compete.

Save the Date

Washington County 4-H/FFA Spring Swine Show will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2014 at Four States

Livestock Auction. If you are planning on showing market swine at the Spring Show you will need to be

enrolled in 4-H for 2014 by December 4th and enrolled in the swine project. Swine will be tagged on

December 7, 2013. Time will be arranged with each exhibitor.

2014 4-H Recognition Night Please remember that the annual 4-H Recognition Night has been moved

from March to April. The 2014 4-H Recognition Night is scheduled for

Saturday, April 12th from 6:30-10:00 at the Multi-Purpose Building.

The Recognition Night Committee will be meeting on Wednesday,

November 6th from 6:30-7:30 at the University of Maryland Extension

Office. Their task at this meeting is to determine the theme, develop

ideas for activities and entertainment and FOOD! If you would like to

share your opinions and ideas, feel free to attend the meeting or email

the 4-H Team your ideas prior to November 6th.

Once again, Washington County 4-H Youth Development Program will be

decorating a Christmas tree at the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree event held at

the Springfield Barn in Williamsport.

We are asking each club to create up to five ornaments that represent your club

and/or 4-H to donate to be used to decorate the Christmas tree.

Decorations will be accepted starting October 15th, but must be to the Extension

Office no later than Friday, November 15th to be placed on the tree.

Please contact a member of the 4-H Team at 301-791-1404 with any questions

or for additional information. No registration is needed to include your club

decorations on the 4-H Charlie Brown Christmas Tree.

Ag Expo and Fair 2014

Congratulations to all who exhibited at the 2013 Ag Expo and Fair. We extend a huge thank you to all those who volunteered with any of the shows and/or activities.

Although next year’s Ag Expo seems far away, it will be here before you know it! Keep the dates in mind and be sure to check upcoming newsletters, the Washington County Facebook Page and email blasts for opportunities and information for this event.

Project Explorations! Day Camp

The Washington County 4-H Youth Development Program offered two week long day camps this

summer to youth ages 6-11. They included a STEM Day Camp in June and an AG Day Camp in

August.

We had 35 campers at the STEM Day Camp and 21 at the AG Day Camp.

Thank you for all of the wonderful help from the Teen Leaders (listed below) and awesome adult

staff (also listed below) that gave of their time and energy to put on both of these camps.

A special thank you to those who collaborated with us to provide educational programming for

the campers; including

Jeff Semler- UME Ag Agent- for Heart Dissection, Fruits and Veggie and Chickens

Derrick Bender- UME CRED Coordinator- Turbines and Wood Energy

Western Maryland Research Education Center- Ag activities including Fruit Pressing, Bugs, Tractor

Rural Heritage Museum- Historical STEM and Ag activities including chores, corn hulling, visiting

the museums and village buildings, and working in the garden

OMK- tech kits and scholarships for military youth

Youth Volunteerism

There are always opportunities for youth to assist the 4-H Program provide outreach, school

enrichment, camping or club programming while promoting your club and your passion for 4-H.

Many of these opportunities allow youth to develop leadership skills while assisting other youth

complete an educational activity. Whether you want to earn Student Service Learning hours

or share your passion for 4-H, check out the Youth Volunteerism flyer on our website

Club Needs?

The 4-H Team is in the process of compiling contact information and programs that may be desirable and

beneficial to your club meetings. An example would be, the name and contact information of an individual

that would be willing to come to your club to talk about marketing your animals to buyers.

your name and contact information if YOU are someone with special skills and/or knowledge along with

the interest to work with youth in our 4-H club

The National American Rabbit Breeder convention will be held in Harrisburg Pa. farm show building October

19th- 21st, 2013.

anyone is interested in attending or visiting one day, please contact Shannon or Curtis. This is a wonderful

opportunity to see characteristics of breeds and varieties.

Make your mark in the 4-H Newsletter by designing your own Clover Character!

Use the clover provided below (either copy it, trace it or request a copy via email at

[email protected], PLEASE DO NOT USE THE 4-H CLOVER) and create a unique cartoon

character like the one to the right.

Feel free to add to the clover using digital means or by hand. Feel free to include a caption with your clover. Be sure to include a title for your clover (i.e. Cutie Clover). Be sure to include your name, age and either your club or city. Be creative!
