CTLLS Induction Session

This is an intermediate course which will enable you to become officially qualified as an associate teacher in continuing education - someone who works from pre-designed curricula to teach a particular a subject or learner type.

Acquiring this Certificate qualifies you for Associate Teacher, Learning & Skills (ATLS) status, and is your licence to teach.

What is CTLLS?

The Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector is for anyone working in an associate teacher role without a recognised qualification, or planning to become an associate teacher in further, adult or continuing education.

To take the Certificate, you'll need access to 30 hours of teaching practice in a recognised lifelong learning location.

The 7304 Certificate comprises three core units and further optional units. There are 120 contact hours (direct study) and 120 non contact hours (self directed study), this also included hours completed to successfully achieve the PTLLS qualification. It includes 30 hours teaching practice, observed for a minimum of four hours over four occasions.

The three core units are:

• Preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector: six credits

• Planning and enabling learning: nine credits

• Principles and practice of assessment: three credits

The optional units include:• Equality and diversity: six credits

Candidates are required to complete two assignments, one theory and one practical, for each of the mandatory units and those identified for the chosen optional units, to be achieved at level 3 or level 4.

The assignments are broken down into smaller assessment tasks, which have an emphasis on creative and 'hands-on' learning.

The Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) framework is a unitised framework for England to help people progress from the initial Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector, to the Certificate or level 5 Diplomas/ Additional Diplomas for teaching in the lifelong learning sector, depending on career aspirations and role requirements.

The City & Guilds new portfolio of teaching qualifications that comply with the QTLS framework comprises:

• 7303 (PTLLS) Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector at level 3 & 4

• 7304 (CTLLS) Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector at levels 3 & 4

• 7305 (DTLLS) Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector at level 5

What is 7305 DTLLS?

A DTLLS is the acronym for the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong learning Sector. It may be offered to pre-service and in-service candidates on a part-time or full-time basis and is awarded at level 5 upon completion. The diploma meets the qualification requirements for the full teaching role.

Candidates are required to undertake a minimum of 150 hours teaching practice.

Candidates must be observed for at least eight hours over a minimum of eight occasions of their 150 teaching practice hours. Each observation must be for a minimum of 30 minutes and must be in the candidate’s place of work.

The Institute for Learning (IFL) is the professional body for teachers, trainers and assessors across Further Education (FE), including adult and community learning, emergency and public services, FE colleges, the armed services, the voluntary sector and work- based learning.

The IFL’s vision is that their membership of FE practitioners will be truly recognised for excellent teaching and training for learners. As the distinctive professional body for teachers and trainers in FE and skills it has three main strategic aims:

•To provide a range of benefits and services that is of value for members

•To consolidate and promote recognition of professional status of teachers and trainers in FE and skills provision

•To give a voice to practitioners and offer a representative and authoritative voice for teachers and trainers.
