Communicating Across Generations - Part 1 Presented by: Tedi Winnett, Director, Kenosha County UW-Extension We live in a very interesting time—never before in our country’s history have so many generations worked together in one setting—four generations in the workplace at one time! This presentation will review the four generations and discuss the challenges as each generation has diverse perspectives, values, needs and expectations.

Time Management is a State of Mind! Presented by: Sherri Arnold, Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin, Inc. Have you ever heard the expression, “if you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got”? Today everyone needs to accomplish more in less time and with fewer resources available than before. We certainly all have a basic understanding of time management and what we should do, but it isn’t necessarily what you know, it is what you do that makes the difference. As professionals we want to be sure that as we continue to become more knowledgeable and proficient in our jobs we should also be continually raising the bar for our productivity. Everyone’s time is important and most people believe they do not possess enough to accomplish everything which needs doing. In reality, you cannot “manage” time….therefore you need to focus more on self-management and monitor your way of thinking to “access” the additional needed time. If you are able to embrace a different attitude regarding personal change you will realize that time can be more in your favor, you will find yourself feeling less stressed and actually being even more productive than you have been.

Identifying & Dealing with Secondary Traumatic Stress &

Vicarious Trauma Presented by: Sarah Hessenauer, MSW, LCSW, PhD, Assistant Professor, UW-Whitewater There is an increasing attention to the fact that social workers provide services to those who have been traumatized, and as a result, either experience secondary traumatic stress or vicarious traumatization. It is thought that vicarious trauma leads to compassion fatigue when working with clients. There is concern that we have not provided social workers the tools necessary to deal with their exposure to working with those who have suffered from trauma. When this issue is left unaddressed, social workers are more likely to experience burn-out, compassion fatigue and physical symptoms such as increased stress, nightmares, difficulty sleeping, etc. This presentation will: 1) Define secondary traumatic stress and vicarious trauma as they relate to the field of social work 2) Present research related to secondary stress and vicarious trauma 3) Identify ways in which social work colleagues and organizations can support their staff who are exposed to trauma 4) Review coping skills and interventions social workers can implement to aid them in dealing with or preventing secondary or vicarious traumatization.
