Ways to identify
atoms
Atom Particles
Electrons have a negative charge.
Protons have a
positive charge.
Neutrons have no charge.
Isotopes are elements that have the
same number of protons but different
numbers of neutrons. In normal atoms
the protons and neutrons are equal in number.
Models are visual representations
developed from experimental
evidence that help scientists see and
test theories. Atoms are too small to see under a microscope.

Electron dot diagrams of sodium and chlorine.
Shows all
electrons in the
different energy levels
Shows all electrons in
only the outermost
energy level or valence
electrons. These are the
electrons that form
bonds. Molecules are
stable when there are 8
electrons in the last shell.
Na and Cl will share an
electron to make a salt molecule.
Remember the Atomic
number shows the number of
protons and the number of electrons an element has.
