The Role of Universities in Promoting Lifelong Learning
Given the increasingly rapid change in our societies, early-life study programmes
cannot be expected to provide all the knowledge an individual might need
throughout their working and living life. Instead the “what has to be learned”
must be continually re-invented and renewed. This session will shed light on
strategic efforts such as initiatives into transdisciplinary applied research in the
field of Lifelong Learning (hereafter: LLL) to inform teaching and highlight the
university’s commitment to knowledge and technology transfer. The session will
also highlight on close collaboration with diverse regional, national and
international stakeholders, including businesses, which play a vital role in the
provision of LLL strategy.
10:00 am – 10:20 am Networking Coffee Break
10:25 am – 11:05 am
Roundtable Discussion 1
The Role of Universities in the Digital Age
The Fourth Industrial Revolution urges us to think creatively about the
manufacturing process, value chain, distribution and customer service processes.
In the meanwhile, the future of education emphasises the immense need to look
beyond these areas and strategically utilise the “Internet of Things” to prepare the
coming workforce for the challenges ahead. This session will discuss on the role
of universities in shaping future technology by being the testbeds for innovation
and educating future generations.
11:05 am – 11:15 am Question and Answer session
Keynote Speaker 2
The Role of Universities as Innovation and Enterprise Drivers The role of universities as drivers for innovation and enterprise has increasingly
been recognised, with many reports highlighting the role of university-business
collaborations in driving local economic development. The university
collaboration is valuable for new-to-the-market innovation, particularly to
smaller companies. This session will highlight on the key benefits as well as the
‘market failures’ that cannot be ignored: the lack of awareness of the potential
benefits from university collaboration, and the lack of knowledge of potential
university partners.

The Role of Universities in Quadruple-Helix Collaboration (QHC)
The Quadruple-Helix relationship between university, industry, government and
community plays an increasingly crucial role in the production, transfer and
application of knowledge in the future - how are these collaborations developed
and fostered? We believe it is timely to accelerate the initiatives thus far, and
move to the next phase not just research but research and development with
emphasis on commercial potentials of knowledge generated from the research
activities. Hence, this closing panel discussion looks into how QHC can be further
fostered through knowledge sharing, expertise clustering, innovation production,
and spin-off companies for the country.
