PRAYER & WORSHIP

PREPARING FOR THE SECOND COMING

The main point that our Lord makes in today’s Gospel

(Luke 12: 32–48) is the importance for all his followers to

prepare for his Second Coming (parousia). At the end of

time there will be the final judgment. The problem for

people is that while the reality of the Second Coming is

certain, the time for that Coming is not known by us. Jesus

gives this advice, “Provide money bags for yourselves that

do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven.” (vs.

33) Helping the poor and needy by acts of charity and the

practice of justice will help build up that heavenly treasure.

The parable that Christ uses teaches that all his

followers must be prepared, “for at an hour you do not

expect, the Son of Man will come.” (vs. 40) Our Lord also

teaches clearly that this watchfulness applies especially to

church leaders: “Much will be demanded of the person

entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the

person entrusted with more.” (vs. 48) The greater the gift,

the greater will be the responsibilities.

Pope Francis has much to say about the importance of

“making the Church constantly go out from herself, keeping

her mission focused on Jesus Christ, and her commitment to

the poor.” (The Joy of the Gospel, paragraph 97) The Holy

Father adds some wonderful words about the role of

women: “The Church acknowledges the indispensable

contribution which women make to society through the

sensitivity, intuition and other distinctive skill sets which

they, more than men, tend to possess.” (paragraph 103)

Finally, today’s Gospel uses the name “Son of Man”

for our Lord. It is the title that Jesus uses frequently, but no

one else uses it at all. Jesus uses this title in various

circumstances. In today’s Gospel he employs this title when

talking of the End Time: “You also must be prepared, for at

an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” (vs.

40) Christ also applies it during his public ministry: “Just as

Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of

Man be to this generation.” (11: 30) Also during the passion

Jesus uses the title: “The Son of Man must suffer greatly

and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the

scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.” (9: 22)

HEALING PRAYER

Saturday, August 24

th

and Sunday, August 25

th

On the fourth weekend of each month after all Masses, two

types of healing are available to the St. Aloysius

community. The first is the Sacrament of the Anointing of

the Sick and the second is healing prayer offered by a lay

prayer team from St. Aloysius’ healing ministry.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is properly

administered by a priest “as soon as anyone of the faithful

begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age,” or

“just prior to a serious operation.”

CCC 1514-1515

Healing prayer offered by a lay prayer team is appropriate

for anyone of the faithful for any reason that may be

burdening that individual. Reasons may include physical or

mental health issues, struggles with letting go of certain

sins, addictions, fears, confusion, emotional pain,

relationships problems and many other concerns a person

may have. Prayers are brief; lasting no longer than 5-10

minutes.

You are welcomed and encouraged to avail yourselves of

these offering as needed. Please know that anything

shared with a trained lay prayer team is held in strict

confidentiality and will not be spoken about outside of

the brief prayer period. Prayer teams will meet

parishioners who would like to be prayed with at either the

St. Lawrence Room (cry room) or the St. Aloysius alcove.

St. Vincent de Paul Society’s 12

th

Annual Friends of the

Poor Walk will be held on Saturday, September 28

th

at 9

A.M. at Father Andrew White S.J. School in Leonardtown.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society offers assistance to those in

need in our community. All funds stay in St. Mary’s County

to help the poor. The walk will begin at Father Andrew

White School and the course will take walkers through the

streets of Historic Leonardtown. The goal of the walk is to

call attention and awareness to the needs of the poor.

So many times we may think about wanting to take some

action, or make a donation, but not know what to do, or

contribute, that would be most meaningful to someone in

need. Here is an opportunity to support people in our

community, within St. Mary’s County, that have needs that

vary from help paying an electric or water bill, to needing a

bed or other household items. This Walk is a major

fundraiser for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The Walk

also allows you to take action in meeting with others in our

Church Community and the wider local Community.

There will be a post walk brunch, live music, face painting,

theme baskets for the silent auction, balloons for children

and door prizes. Please consider bringing a non-perishable

food item for the Helping Hands food bank on the day of

the walk. Health Connections from Med Star St. Mary’s

Hospital will be at the walk offering free blood pressure

screenings.

For registration, go to www.fopwalk.org. Same-day

registration begins at 7:30 A.M. There is no registration

fee, but walkers are encouraged to collect pledges or to

make a donation to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Walk

with us on September 28

th

, you can make a difference!
