Psalms week 4

Sunday 13th October 2019 28th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Readings for this Sunday are on page 149 of the Parish Mass Book

Welcome to all at Mass today, especially to any visitors and those who are here for the first time. Please take this sheet home with you which will tell you about this week’s celebration and the activities during the week and also to remind you of our Liturgy today.

TODAY’S MASS

“Give thanks to the Lord!”

We should always give thanks to the Lord for

his constant goodness to us. He gives us new

life through the death and resurrection of his

Son, Jesus Christ. We know that if we die

with him we shall also live with him. We

were like lepers through sin and are now

made new through Christ’s saving power

which cleanses and heals us.

First Reading: Second Book of Kings 5:14-17

Naaman comes to Israel in spite of his two-fold uncleanness: he is a pagan, and

a leper. Because he obeyed God by trusting Elisha he received two-fold

healing. His flesh was made whole and his heart turned to the living God.

Second Reading: Second Letter of St. Paul to Timothy 2:8-13

From Rome, where he is a prisoner, Paul sends Timothy his spiritual testament:

God wishes to save all the pagans. Jesus Christ risen from the dead is the

guarantee of this good news which nobody can chain up: We may be unfaithful

but Christ does not disown himself.

Gospel: Luke 17:11-19

By using the words ’take pity on us’ - usually addressed only to God—the

lepers recognise Jesus as Saviour. By sending them to the priests in the temple,

as if already healed, Jesus tests their faith. Because they set out trusting in his

word, they are healed. Only one returns to thank the true priest of the new

covenant. He is also a Samaritan: he symbolises salvation in the faith offered

to the pagan nations.
