PERIODIC MAINTENANCE

transmission oil before the engine is first startedand daily thereafter. Refer to "Checking Oil Level"which follows.

One of the main reasons for selecting hydraulicsystems for use in today's turf equipment is theease of maintenance. By caring for the system us-ing a regular maintenance program, you caneliminate common problems.

This section will explain how to keep the systemmaintained and at an optimum performance level.However, these goals can only be reached when themechanic understands and follows a goodmaintenance routine which consists of the follow-ing:

CHECKING OIL LEVEL

"VICKERS TRANSMISSION"1. Position the machine on a level surface and stopthe engine.

2. The level plug is located on the front side of thedifferential housing, just behind the large cutterdeck counterbalance spring. Be sure the machine ison a level surface, and remove the level plug. The oilshould be up to the bottom of the hole.

3. If the oil level is low, tilt the seat forward andremove the filler cap shown in Figure 4. Add a highquality SE-SF 10W40 oil until the level is up to thebottom of the check plug hole in the differentialhousinQ.

. Cleanliness is the prime concern when servicing

hydraulic systems.

. Never allow contaminents into the system.

. Keep all of the parts clean,

. Change the oil and filter regularly.

. Keep your work area clean.IMPORTANT: When adding oil to the system, pour itthrough a funnel with a fine wire screen (200 meshor better). Keep the funnel and containers imma.culately clean. This procedure prevents accidentalcontamination of the hydraulic system.

. Follow manufacturer's recommendations as tooils, filters, and adjustments.

. Maintain good records.

. Use common sense.

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM OIL

The hydraulic system is designed to operate on anyhigh-quality detergent oil having the AmericanPetroleum Institute - API - "service classification"SE or SF. Oil viscosity - weight - must be selected

according to the anticipated ambient temperature.Temperature/viscosity recommendations are:

Above O°F(-18°C) - Use SAE 10W30 or 10W40.Below O°F(-18°C) - SAE 5W20 or5W30, orTypeA, Suffix A Automatic Transmission Fluid.

NOTE: Do not mix engine oil and automatictransmission fluid; hydraulic system componentdamage may result.

1. Position the machine on a level surface and stopthe engine.

2. Unscrew the dipstick cap (Fig. 5) from the fillerneck and wipe it with a clean rag. Screw the dipstickcap finger-tight onto the filler neck. Unscrew thedipstick and check the level of the oil. If the level isnot within 1/2 inch (13mm) from the groove in thedipstick (Fig. 5), add enough oil to raise the level tothe groove mark. DO NOT OVERFILL by more than1/2 inch (13mm) above groove.

The axle housing acts as the reservoir for thesystem. The transmission and axle housing areshipped from the factory with approximately 5quarts (4.7L) of oil. However, check the level of

Tighten the nut finger tight until it bottomsagainst the seat (Fig. 8).

With an ink pen or marker, mark a linelengthwise on the nut and adapter (SeeFig. 8).

4. Remove the tube that connects the axle housingand transmission (Sundstrand), or the axle housingand filter (Vickers) and allow the oil to flow into adrain pan.

5. Fill the new hydraulic oil filter with fresh 10W30or 10W40 oil and install the filter onto the bottom ofthe transmission or filter mounting pad.

6. Install the tube between the axle housing andtransmission/filter mounting pad.

7. Fill the axle (reservoir) to the proper level; referto "Checking Oil Level," page 10.

8. Start the engine and operate at an idle for about 5minutes. Turn the engine off.

9. Allow the machine to sit for about 2 minutes.After two minutes have passed, check the level ofthe oil in the axle. If the level is low, add oil toachieve the proper level. If the level is too high,drain some of the oil until it is at the correct level;refer to "Checking Oil Level," page 10.

Hold the adapter with a wrench and tightenthe nut the number of flats indicated in thechart on page 14, according to the hosesize (Fig. 9). This should secure theconnection.

2. SAE Straight Thread Q-ring Seal

A. Assure that the connecting parts areclean. Sand, grass, or other contaminantswill prevent a good seal and may damagethe O-ring. The O-ring is the most impor-tant part in this type of connection as itserves as the main seal of the connection(Fig. 10).

HYDRAULIC LINES AND FITTINGS

Lines and fittings are the "linkages" that tie thecomponents of the hydraulic system together. Theymust carry the fluid without leaking, under pres-sures of perhaps 1,000 to 4,000 psi (6895 to 27580kPa) or more.

In order for these parts to do their job, it is necessarythat they be in good condition, mounted and routed

correctly, and properly tightened.

A daily inspection should include:

1. Check for clearance; lines should not rub againstanother line or part.

2. Check for poor physical condition; look forcracks, abrasions, swelling, and deterioration.

3. Check for bends, dents, and kinks; too muchfluid flow restriction may cause overheating and

slow operation.

4. Look for signs of oil leakage.

The correct method for tightening hydraulic fittingsshould be followed at all times:

1. SAE Flare Connections

A. Assure that the two connecting parts areclean. Sand, grass or other contaminantswill prevent a good seal, no matter howtight the fitting is torqued.

Always replace the a-ring seal when thistype fitting shows signs of leakage.

The jam nut and washer must be to theback side of the smooth portion of theelbow adapter (Fig. 11).

Failure of the flexible hydraulic hoses most oftenoccurs because of damage, but can also be theresult of weather, chemicals, or storage conditionswhere the machine is stored in an extremely warmenvironment. A preventive maintenancereplacement program that has hydraulic hosesreplaced at the first sign of damage should provebeneficial when lines are not protected from theelements, such as the sun, chemicals, or physicaldamage.

Torque figures above are recommended for plain,cadmium, or zinc plated fittings; dry or wetinstallations.

These torque valves are not for tubes of 1/2 inch(12.7mm) 0.0. or larger with wall thicknesses of .035inch (.889mm) or less. The torque is specified for.035 inch (.899mm) wall tubes on each applicationindividually.

Newer gasoline models may contain a specialwasher which is used as an orifice to restrict oil flowinto the cooler. Be careful to account for and installthis washer properly between the 90 degree elbowand the hydraulic hose fitting. Should the washer beallowed to tilt sideways during installation, a squeal-
