EDITOR’S VIEW Do you believe that everything in the world is connected to everything else? This became known as the Butterfly Effect: “if a butterfly is flapping its wings in Beijing, this could cause an earthquake in San Francisco.” In this light, it is obvious that present effects are due to karmic causes from the past. And future effects arise from the causes we make in the present.

Today’s global warming crisis has given us a clear explanation that everything is interrelated, and everything affects global warming. This issue of 8 HOURS may give you some ideas to save the environment. Your helping hand can surely save our environment, save the world—another thing that we can take action for our beloved planet.

In this issue of 8 HOURS, we have brought you the story of Merck Co., Ltd., the company that greatly cares about its people by providing creative, innovative office zones to make every hour at the office count and more enjoyable. The latest innovative environment-conscious home design from renowned designer and architect Dr. Singh Intrachooto is also featured in this issue.

From eight hours of work to eight hours of recreation to the remaining eight of sleep, what we encounter at work can surely affect the rest of our day. 8 HOURS also offers you tips to choose a well-designed chair which gives you all day long a sense of comfort and a source of inspiration.

“What affects one, affects all” is nature’s truth.

And that is the heart of Rockworh’s design concept–

we create furniture from “Real Life.”

EDITOR’S VIEW

LIFE STYLE TRENDSWorld’s leading trend forecasting agency Nelly Rodi TrendLab, in their recent trend book, has analyzed the upcoming 08’s – 09’s lifestyle design trends and made up categories in relation with the four seasons: GEOMATIC MANIFAST/ WHITE GOTHIC/ RIVERSIDE/ and THE EXTANTRICS.

Atmosphere: This trend focuses on 30-and-over urban generation—smart and stylish, distinguished individuals who dislike all odds and ends. They are those snazzy people who reside in their super cool self-decorated cribs, and they like elegant and classy 60’s and 70’s décor.Materials: Textiles for this season will give the impression of collage and patchwork. Printing works will stick to vivid colors, mixing geometrical shapes with metallic finish like silver or bronze. Accessories: Turn gears, screws and bolts into decorative pieces. Turn everything inside out to reveal internal structure, reflecting both movement and technology.

Atmosphere: This is a counter response to dark and dull decoration trend by having everything painted in ghostly white to create a surreal dramatic effect – a mixed impression of both modern and historical time frames. Materials: For textile, anything soft, warm and elegant is your choice. Recommended fabrics are cotton, fur, cashmere, alpaca and mohair with hemmed rim or fluffy smocking to adding texture.Accessories: Ceramics and table utensils with matte finish or dull color ones.

Atmosphere: As if a reflection of the soul of countryside, this style is for city slickers. They are those in search of true spirit, those who pay tribute to Mother Nature. Materials: Get your product some vibe with tube-shape decoration and add some funky rim. This will kick your product down from the back shelf and send it right into your eyes.Accessories: Bring nature to your living room with wild grass leaves and various seeds on your feather-embroidered curtain. Inspiration can be found from leaves and watery shapes.

Atmosphere: A design extraordinaire for extraordinary ones. This is a comeback of post-renaissance design inspired by a baroquely dreamlike vision with bazaar-like atmosphere.Material: An improbable match of the unmixable will bring an outlandish hybrid of odds and sods and extravaganza. The result is the mutated creation from objects that once tedious but now lively and even handsome. Accessories: Play along with patchwork and collage and unleash the joy of your imagination. Make yourself some DIY surprises by putting together those plastic, resin and precious stones, and creating some classic self-made varieties in such the lively bazaar.

A group of designers from all over the world, in search of a cooler and greener light, has gathered and presented their environmental friendly products that are safe and functional, and help minimize the environmental impact. They have called themselves the “Green Designers.’’

Here are some work samples of these “green” creators.

In Frankfurt Motor Show, your childhood may come to flashback when you see the Volvo ReCharge Concept, a plug-in hybrid with individual electric wheel motors and batteries that can be recharged via a regular electrical outlet for maximum environmental benefit.

Built under the ReCharge concept, Volvo C30 came with individual electric wheel motors and batteries that allow you to

recharge your car by just plug it to any household power socket. But do not let its toy-ish look deceives you. When fully charged, it may run up to 62 miles on electric power alone or hit its top speed at 100 mph. With this rechargeable ability, this plug-in hybrid car, when used as intended, has about 66 percent lower emissions of carbon dioxide compared with the best hybrid cars available on the market today. This makes Volvo C30 the true automobile of the future.

Eco-sensitive and ergonomic, this smart portable PC has been designed to give users the feeling of reading a slim magazine. The use of a liquid fuel cell is an environmentally-friendly solution. Unlike lithium batteries that are commonly used but cause many environmental problems after being discarded, the liquid fuel cell has an eco-friendly method of obtaining electrochemical energy from the chemical reaction of natural gas and methanol. Designed like a perfume bottle, the fuel cell allows users to visually determine how much fuel is left by the amount of colored air in the cell. And when the power runs out, the battery can be replaced easily by any user.

A subsidiary of the globally-impacting, German-based Merck Group, Merck Ltd. Thailand is one of the leading suppliers of pharmaceuticals and chemicals to hospitals, institutions and the industry in Thailand. Merck Ltd. Thailand treats its employees professionally, enhancing the professional skills and capabilities of its employees and improving the quality of their lives with great care and respect. Evidently, this “caring environment” reflects in the office and its pleasant décor, featuring stylish professional area and comfortable, private space.

EMPLOYEE ORIENTATION, A “CARE” VALUE OF MERCK

Merck’s overall business attitude is shaped by its four “Cares” –care for its customers, care for its employees, care for its shareholders and care for the societies in which Merck conducts its business.

Having an inspired and engaged workforce, therefore, is the key to provide employees with maximum joy at work. It was what Mr. Heinz Landau, chairman and managing director of Merck Ltd. Thailand, expected to happen. And he successfully made it happened right after the neighboring company moved out, leaving the “next door” open for him.

“We always wished to expand our office space. Since our neighbor moved its office, we had a tremendous opportunity to expedite and expand the office with more functional areas and meeting rooms. Our employees can relax in the coffee corner and chill-out zone where they can work, read books and enjoy themselves in a restful, chillaxing working atmosphere,” said Mr. Landau.

MOTIVATION THAT WORKS

MERCK’S NEW OFFICE GOESBEYOND TRADITION.

Motivation that Works | Merck’s New Office Goes Beyond Tradition

In any workplace, freedom of ideas is of the utmost importance and desire to every member of staff. Freedom access to ideas and freedom of expression are bedrock principles that are necessary to creating healthy, productive organizations.

A WORKPLACE BEYOND AN ORDINARY OFFICE

Mr. Landau believes that a lively office atmosphere is a key factor in motivating employee behavior, improving employee satisfaction and increasing loyalty and morale. Apart from giving customers a positive impression of the company, enriching environment provides prospective candidates aspiration to become a part of Merck family.

The person behind this “atmosphere for success” is Be Gray Interior and Architecture Co., Ltd., who has been responsible for designing and decorating the original and the new Merck’s office areas since 2000.

“Our company has been established for nine years and we have been working with Merck for seven years. Since we were picked to pitch a planned expansion of the Merck office, we had evaluated customer needs in order to provide an optimum service. Since our modern style architecture and design matched Mr. Landau’s ideas, we have had more opportunities to serve Merck, and we have known each other a lot better,” said Viwat Kunalungkarn, project manager of Be Gray.

A LIVELY OFFICE ATMOSPHERE IS A KEY FACTOR IN MOTIVATING EMPLOYEE BEHAVIOR, IMPROVING EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION AND INCREASING LOYALTY AND MORALE.

“Mr. Landau treats his staff with great care in both career and emotional issues. He rewards his employees for their hard work and dedication to the job by providing them a good, healthy working environment. Our designers then created an expanded work zone, new meeting rooms and a comfortable common area where staff can work, hang out, chill and relax,” he said.

Be Gray has transformed the office into the stylish place under a unique “making the most of the area” decorating concept, said Patavee Teeravanitchanunt, one of the two interior designers of this project. “Based on the rooms’ primary function and employee behavior, we made the rooms multifunctional. The large meeting room, named TWO-in-ONE, was used only twice a month, for instance, was redesigned to support another function as a studio room for evening exercise class. For smaller rooms, which were always left out of people’s attention unless there were any meetings, we took off a few walls, brought in sofas and used a transparent glass wall that can turn into an opaque when needed. We simply didn’t want to leave space unused.”

MERCK’S FUNCTIONAL BEAUTY

“70 percent of the whole area is decorated in shades of blue and grey, an area mainly for business aspects, and the rest is the newly renovated orange-dominated area. This 30 percent of the area also fits Merck’s corporate identity—a 70/30 proportion comprising blue, yellow and orange. Thus, the orange zone is like the highlighted area in Merck’s logo,” said another interior designer Pitipatana Jongsomjitt.

For the color selection, he added, vibrant orange is not only outstanding but also reflects the physical aspect of the brand. For decoration materials, everything must be

well-designed, high-quality and sturdy with its ability to blend into any rooms in the office.

“Firstly, I had never thought of any particular brands. My furniture selection was based on both functionality and design. Rockworth’s wall system is not just a piece furniture or decoration. Rather, it’s a true problem solver that effectively resolves problems of piles of document with limited storage space. We wanted everything either to be plugged into the wall or to look like a part of it, giving a more spacious feeling. Unlike those flashy ones, we would like the furniture to be really functional. And Rockworth has given us the right solution,” Be Gray’s project manager said.

These are ideas behind the furniture selection and how Be Gray has made everything perfectly fit the Merck office. For members of Merck, nothing is comparable to working in a perfect environment with perfect bosses and perfect colleagues.

He reinterprets the essense of “Traditional Thai House” flavor and creates a more contemporary home-and-living concept in order to fit modern people’s lifestyle.

Will a traditional Thai triangle roof residence go well with a modern four-storeyed townhome? Let’s have a look!

‘HAPPY LAND’TRADITIONAL THAI HOUSE

From an array of four-storeyed townhomes stands out a building covered with a wooden structure which is almost ten meters in height and is slightly extended from the house itself. This structure—a pergola to be more precise—is made of woven strips of natural materials such as water-hyacinth and banana alternating with nightshades or hanging plants functioning well as a protective shield against strong sunlight.

“These natural materials last less than one and a half year. Until then, plants will be able to live on their own. The bars will then stay lush and green,” said Dr. Singh, adding that he also applied a sense of spaciousness from a traditional Thai abode to a place with limited space, embodying plants which are not just eye-friendly but also helps to create good ventilation. Perhaps it’s about time to bid farewell to the air-conditioner.

The design package at the work station on the ground floor allows a nice windflow. A multi-function working desk set can be adjusted to a party table. Consuming an incredibly little space is a huge cabinet equipped with an erasable writing board. Stylish on the mezzanine is but the balcony with parquet floor. On a breezy day, you can pleasure in the cozy flow through streak-free windows on each level. On the kitchen floor, home-grown veggies await to be watered at the small balcony with a door as an area separator.

A gift from the simple-yet-functional bedroom decoration is but your sounder sleep. Well-organized closet gives the room more space. Three-wall bathroom layout is ideal for air ventilation. But should you wish to indulge yourself with nature, why not try bathing on the rooftop where an outdoor bathtub is for you to soak, reach for the stars and touch the sky at the same time.

And this is an idea to create a verdant green in your house where human and nature can become one.

For some, eight hours are spent. Some might spend less while some spend up to ten hours a day seated in a chair.

No matter how long it takes, inarguably, a chair is really an integral part of everyday life. A chair is like a buddy. And career productivity will surely walk hand in hand with pleasure if you have a good, reliable buddy who can greatly assist you.

But, which one can be a delightful companion and a most desirable friend?

HOW MANY HOURS A DAY DO YOU SPEND IN YOUR CHAIR?

“RIGHT” CHAIR IS ALL RIGHT

PROPERTIES OF PROPER CHAIR, PROPER PAL

CHOOSING THE RIGHT, PROPER CHAIR CAN HELP YOU PERFORM BETTER.

A chair should provide comfortable, full-body sedentary support of which you can sit in at least eight hours without encountering back strains, neck pains and overall body aches.

A fully adjustable chair is the undisputable “must.” Back height, seat depth and width, seat angle and arm support should all be adjustable to be better suited to the different shapes of the users. An ergonomic chair should comprise pneumatic lever adjustment to adjust the seat height, tension knob to fit your body weight and adequate backrest conforming to the natural curvature of your spine and providing adequate lumbar support. A good, ergonomic chair, hence, should accommodate people with a wide range of body size and posture.

Made from high quality materials, a chair features high density, molded foam or memory foam seat cushion that conforms to your every move, providing excellent stress relieving comfort and support and enhance better blood circulation.

Chair base should include a wide leg assembly having a plurality of extending legs and with a suitable weight to increase stability and maintain balance when leaning back in the chair.

Having the proper chair is essential. Sitting properly in a “right” chair is one way to prevent discomfort and back strains, and is a right ingredient for a happy, safe and productive work. Choose one of the designs and colors that match your preference, and best of all, it is within your budget.
