Welcome! Dear Symposium Participant: Welcome to the 2007 AETA Fall Symposium — New Directions in Technology The AETA Officers and Board of Directors know that you are here to “discover new directions” as you learn new technologies and make new connections.

This year’s symposium provides workshops, round table discussions, and user group meetings mapped for you through strands that make connections to issues that school systems in Alabama face today. These strands hopefully will help you decide which sessions and meetings will benefit you and your district the most. As an ISTE affiliate, we are excited to once again be able to offer you the “best of the best” presentations from NECC 2007 in Atlanta. Additionally, Don Knezek, ISTE CEO will be joining us for discussions about the new ISTE Student Standards that were re-leased in June. Our symposium would not be possible without the support of our sponsors! Please take time to visit the exhibits and to thank them for their support of our organization. Their backing of our symposium also provides support for funding advocacy programs for technology throughout the year. Special thanks go to our AETA Executive Vice-President and Conference Chair, David Asbury, and our Vice-President of Sponsor Relations, Glen Granberry for their work and attention to details in making this event possible. I would also like to formally thank our staff member Fran Pridgeon for her help in making this conference run smoothly. And, lastly a HUGE thank you to our sponsors, presenters, volunteers and YOU who help make this conference a great success in influencing the learning of our students. On behalf of the AETA Officers and Board of Directors, enjoy the conference, continue the life long learning journey and seek “New Directions in Technology!”

Dear Symposium Attendees,

We welcome you to explorer New Directions in Technology at the Perdido Beach

Resort. The 8th Annual Symposium should certainly be one to remember. From the Keynote addresses to the Concurrent Sessions, you will be engulfed with new vision,

knowledge, and Direction for your school or district.

Again we are fortunate to be well represented by our ISTE National Partners. Don Knezek, ISTE CEO will deliver our Keynote address on Monday and ISTE Best-of-the-Best presenters will add some national flavor to our Concurrent Sessions. We’ll have some fun too. Good food and peer networking are always a highlight of the symposium. “AETA’s Got Talent” on Tuesday evening should be...interesting. I want to thank Glen Granberry for his many hours of work coordinating our sponsors and Fran Pridgeon for her excellent work handling Registration. Thanks to Davis Brock who truly worked with me as a partner to make this conference happen. A special THANKS to Jenny Moon (my right hand) who helped with so many of the behind-the scene details. We couldn’t have done it without her! I hope each of you will pick up at least one or two technology “gems” that you can

share and use when you get home. May you return with a renewed Direction for

your technology program. Thank you for attending and have a great time at the conference.

Janet Corder and Joan Gore are experienced educators, workshop presenters and published authors. They have presented at many state and national conventions and have been chosen as a Top Twenty Workshop at NECC for the past several years. Their books, Successful Solutions for Technology Staff Development and Successful solutions for Technology Integration are based on their work with school districts, service centers and convention attendees throughout the United States. Their goal is to provide project based training plus knowledge of how to success-fully embed technology within the curriculum. Since the presenters represent two Texas school districts with very different demographics, they are able to relate to an audience with a wide range of needs. Both presenters have been classroom teachers, technology coordinators assigned to integrate technology at the campus level and currently work at the district level.

Carl Heine, Ph.D. is the Director of the 21st Century Information Fluency Project at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, Illinois. He has worked on the Project for the past three years, conducting research, workshops and develop-ing curriculum, including the Full Circle Resource Kit and Internet Search Chal-lenges. Prior to that, he directed the Illinois International Career Academy, a cap-stone program for the Illinois International High School Initiative and managed the Center for Youth Education at the College of DuPage. He earned his doctorate at the University of Chicago for research in flow and mathematical achievement.

Don Knezek, CEO of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®) is recognized internationally for his leadership in collaboration, planning and stan-dards development related to technology in schools. A leader in innovation for transforming education with technology, he holds degrees from Dartmouth Col-lege, the University of Hawaii and the University of Texas at Austin. In his 28 years as a professional educator, Knezek worked in a variety of academic and adminis-trative settings, including K–12 classroom, district office, university, regional ser-vice center, state department of education, and national and international technol-ogy organizations. He directed large multi-state projects in the Star Schools and Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers to Use Technology programs of the U.S. Depart-ment of Education. Don is Co-Chair of the Educational Technology Advisory Committee to the Texas State Board of Education and Co-Director for the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) Project -- an important ISTE initiative. He currently serves on the NETS Refresh Project leadership team updating ISTE’s standards, and he recently directed the National (U.S.) Center for Preparing Tomorrows Teachers to Use Tech-nology (NCPT3). Don is providing consulting services to ministries of education around the world sharing his valued expertise in preparing education leaders and teachers to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Lisa A. Woodard has worked in the education field for 32 years. She has worked in public schools, at the Alabama State Department of Education, as a Senior Policy Analyst at the Regional Education Lab at the University of North Carolina--SERVE, and in the private sector with Computer Sciences Corporation, the contractor for the Alabama Supercomputer Authority. She currently works as the Research and Legis-lative Director for the School Superintendents of Alabama. In addition to working closely with the SDE, AEA, and the School Board Association to develop good budg-ets for education, she has been successful in passage of three laws in the past two years: a joint purchase bill; a bill that revises the foundation program on the factors for funding principals; and, a revision of the teacher accountability bill that requires the Superintendent's involvement in personnel actions for probationary principals.

Craig Pouncey is the Assistant State Superintendent of education, Division of Adminis-trative and Financial Services. His education career in Alabama has included service as a teacher, assistant principal, and superintendent in local school systems. In Febru-ary 2005, he was appointed assistant state superintendent of the state Department of Education’s Division of Administrative and Financial Services. Prior to that he was director over that division. Mr. Pouncey has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in ele-mentary education from Troy State University, and an education specialist degree in education leadership from Auburn University Montgomery. He is currently enrolled as a doctoral candidate in education leadership at Samford University.

Now an author and consultant, Susan Brooks-Young has more than 23 years experi-ence as a teacher (PreK-8th grades) and administrator at the elementary and middle school levels, as well as in a county office of education. She works with school ad-ministrators and teachers across the country on successful implementation of in-structional technology programs. Her latest book, Digital Age Literacy for Teachers: Applying Technology Standards to Everyday Practice, will be published by ISTE in Winter 2007.

Alice Christie’s research and teaching interests focus on using the Internet across all curricular areas and the social and educational implications of such use. A sample of her studies include examining how technology and multimedia can shape classroom knowledge and instruction; gender bias in teacher-student interactions; and whether having students post their work assignments to the Internet effects their learning. Christie’s Web site, www.west.asu.edu/achristie, averages nearly 100,000 visitors each month and more than three million visitors since its inception in 1997. The site provides sound uses of technology in both teaching and learning, and offers a variety of tutorials, activities and projects. The “Chronicle of Higher Education” called Christie’s site one of the best educational portals on the Internet.
