SCENE 1

A DANCING PARTY IN THE VILLAGE OF MERYTON IN LONDON

ELIZABETH:

Jane I’m enjoying so much this party! The music is beautiful and the place is fantastic...but the most important thing, I see a lot of interesting and handsome gentlemen!

JANE:

Oh yeah, to be frank, I’d like to dance with that boy…

ELIZABETH:

Which one, sister?

JANE:

The one who is standing next to the rich man named Darcy.

ELIZABETH:

Oh, really! Our mother told me two rich guys from London arrived to the village recently…so they must be...

JANE:

I can notice that Darcy likes you, am I right?

ELIZABETH:

Honestly, I don’t. However I notice that his friend is looking at you! Maybe he is going to invite you to dance…

(…)

BINGLEY:

Hey, Darcy! Are you enjoying the party?

DARCY:

Frankly, I’m sorry to tell you but I used to go to better parties. This is unacceptable to me.

BINGLEY:

Well, look at the bright side! There are beautiful girls and delicious food. Did you notice there are two girls stearing at us? Why don’t you invite one of them? How about that girl?

DARCY:

No way! She doesn’t deserve my attention. She’s not at my level. I’ve seen way more better girls in my life.

BINGLEY:

I don’t know you, however I’m going to dance with the girl on the right. Come with me!

(…)

BINGLEY:

Hi cuties! Let me introduce myself. My name is Sir Charles Bingley and this is my friend Sir Fitzwilliam Darcy.

DARCY:

Hi.

JANE:

Hi, it’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Jane Bennet and this is my sister Elizabeth.

ELIZABETH:

Hi.

BINGLEY:

I was wondering if you would like to dance with me.

JANE:

For sure.

(…Darcy is alone with Elizabeth)

BINGLEY:

(…he gets close to Darcy)

Hey, why don’t you dance with her?

DARCY:

Elizabeth, would you like to dance with me? Apparently we are the only ones who are not dancing in the dancefloor…

ELIZABETH:

I’m sorry to tell you Mr. Darcy, but I don’t think you would like to dance with someone inferior than you…

(…she walks away)

JANE:

Is there something wrong?

ELIZABETH:

Nothing important, Mr. Darcy invited me to dance but I would never dance with him, not for all the tea in China!…and what about you and Mr. Bingley?

JANE:

Oh he invited me to his residence! And I obviously accepted it.

ELIZABETH:

Oh that’s wonderful, I’m so happy for you!

FINAL COMMENTARIES:

ROXANA:

Elizabeth thinks that Darcy is the typical rich guy, vain and selfish, and this is confirmed apparently when she heard his offensive and underestimated opinion about her, so she started to have prejudices about him and try to take distance from him without give him an opportunity. Conversely at the end she discover the truth, Mr. Darcy is a very good man who helped a lot to her family the main problem besides his status was that he wasn’t an outgoing person so he was not good at talking to other people in general.

JOHANS:

Darcy thinks that Elizabeth…

….(JOHANS TIENE QUE PONER LO QUE VA A DECIR SOBRE EL ORGULLO/PRIDE)

ROXANA:

In this famous and classic novel what the author, Jane Austen, wants to transmit is that her two principal characters shows the pride and prejudice prevailing in the society at that time, and how it could affect relationships and how could it turn so complicated. They had to mature and learned from their own mistakes to face the future together getting over the pride of class from Darcy and the prejudices of Elizabeth to him.
