On The Way
The Mass in Slowest Motion: Angels, Souls, and Saints
The next three sections of the Roman Canon emphasize our unity with others in the Church: with an-gels, departed souls, and saints. We’ll only be able to get to the first two this week.
First, the mysterious invocation of an angel’s assistance: In humble prayer we ask you, almighty God: command that these gifts be borne by the hands of your holy Angel to your altar on high in the sight of your di-vine majesty…
This expresses once again the unity – indeed, the oneness – of our altar here with the altar in heaven. Again, what we do sacramentally under the forms of bread and wine here below, the angels and the saints do face to face with God at the altar in heaven. We want our offerings here and now to be as present on heaven’s altar as the angels and saints are.
Who is the angel? Scholars disagree about this. Some say that that it is Saint Michael. Others hold that the text does not intend a specific angel. Traditionally, it has been taken to refer to Christ Himself, Who is some-times referred to as the “Angel of great counsel” (cf. Is 9:6). Now, this does not mean that Jesus is Himself an angel (He has a divine nature and a human nature, but not an angelic nature). Rather, the word “angel” – mes-senger – in this context would describe the mission, not the Person of Christ. He is a messenger first to bring the good news of salvation to us. He is then – in this inter-pretation – the messenger to bring our offerings to the altar in heaven.
Then the priest expresses the purpose of this union of the two altars: so that all of us, who through this participation at the altar receive the most holy Body and Blood of your Son, may be filled with every grace and heavenly blessing. Notice what this means about the re-ception of Holy Communion: it is a participation at the altar, a sharing in the Sacrifice of the altar. When we receive Communion we are both nourished by His Body and Blood and incorporated into His perfect Sacrifice.
Next the priest turns back to prayers of interces-sion. Remember also, Lord, your servants N. and N., who have gone before us with the sign of faith and rest in the sleep of peace. This Memento [remembrance] of the dead parallels the Memento of the living prior to the consecration. As with the first Memento, the priest is instructed to pause here and pray in silence. At that mo-ment he calls to mind and even says under his breath the name of the deceased person for whom the Mass is of-fered or for whom he personally wants to pray.
It also affords all the faithful an opportunity to call to mind and pray for their departed loved ones. Grant them, O Lord, we pray, and all who sleep in Christ, a place of refreshment, light and peace. Next Week: Saints and Conclusions

Stewardship The Gift of Time, Talent, Treasure
Dear Friends in Christ, Hard to believe, but it’s been almost four months of shutdowns and social distancing as we continue to navigate the uncertainty of the pandemic. Thanks be to God, we now again have public Mass and can better storm heaven with our prayers. As I look back on the challenges of the past four months, the first order of business is to give thanks. Please know of my gratitude for your continued generosity to Saint James Parish during the pandemic. Despite the suspension of public Masses, so many of you mailed in or dropped off your offertory envelopes or enrolled in Faith Direct. You have likewise been generous to our Social Outreach, Parish Needs, and special Pentecost Sunday collections. This gift of treasure has enabled us not only to keep the doors open but also to reach out to the parish and broader community. Thank you. In addition, so many of you have given of your time and talent. There has been great generosity in volunteering at all levels of the parish. To keep the church open for Adoration and Confession many of you gave your time as porters, lest we go beyond the 10-person limit. We had many faithful adorers who would spend time with our Eucharistic Lord. A special thanks to the Knights of Columbus and our Men’s Group, who were especially generous during this time. With Communion Services and now Mass, many have stepped up to help ensure that our liturgies are reverent, orderly, and safe. I have received letters and emails of gratitude for the reverent and safe manner in which we have conducted ourselves. The thanks really belongs to our volunteers. Because of your generosity over the past several months we have been able both to maintain and to increase our social outreach. Not only did we keep our monthly commitment to food distribution (even as the demand increased), we also did donation drives for crisis pregnancy centers and Catholic Charities. Slowly but surely, our sacristans, lectors, and ushers are returning to their posts as they are able. Eventually (soon, we hope!), other parish groups will be able to return to their activities. If nothing else, the pandemic has revealed the need for prayer and good works. Prayer, of course as the inspiration and nourishment of all we do. It helps us see one another (yes, even with masks on) as members of the Body of Christ. That prayer leads in turn to so many good works for one another, for the Church, and for the broader community. Yes, regretfully, our revenue numbers are down. That is the situation for every nonprofit, it seems. But that does not obscure your great generosity of time, talent, and treasure – and it only increases my gratitude for what you’ve been able to do. May God reward you all for your goodness! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Scalia

Drew LeNard ----2020 Msgr. Paul V. Heller Award Winner Each year two students are honored with the prestigious Msgr. Paul V. Heller/Sister Helen Maureen, IHM award. These awards recognize two eighth grade students – a boy and a girl – who have shown excellence in the classroom, on the playing fields, and in their daily interactions with students, teachers, and staff. Last week, we published an interview with Clara Moschella, the winner of the Sister Helen Maureen, IHM Award. This week, we would like to share our interview with Andrew “Drew” LeNard, the 2020 Msgr. Paul V. Heller Award Winner. The oldest son of Stephen and Debbie LeNard, Drew has two younger siblings who also attend Saint James School - Anna, a rising 7th grader and James, a rising 4th grader. Drew has attended Saint James Catholic School since Kindergarten and has consistently performed well in all
aspects of student life. He is a Star Scout (en route to Eagle Scout), a peer tutor for the National Junior Honor Society, and an excellent athlete with a particular talent for baseball and hockey (he also played basketball and ran track for the school). Drew is the recipient of one of the prestigious Gonzaga Presidential Scholarships, awarded to the school’s top academic applicants. What are your favorite subject(s)? “All of my classes were great. I really enjoyed Algebra with Mrs. Sullivan, Science with Mrs. Gartner, and History with Mr. Bracken.” What is your favorite memory? “Spirit Day and just being with my friends.” What was your favorite service activity? “I enjoyed being a peer tutor. I really liked teaching Spanish. To do this well, you need to understand both the subject and the student.” What was the most important thing you learned at Saint James? “I like the school motto: ‘Do your best and God will do the rest.’ No matter what, God will pick you up and keep you going.” What sets Saint James apart from other schools? “The community is really tight. I knew all of the teachers and students. The priests were present. Everyone supports one another.” What did you learn during the COVID-19 quarantine? “I learned that staying home is not that great! You think three months off from school would be awesome but it’s not. It’s hard to learn at home. I missed interacting with my teachers and classmates.” What is your parting advice to younger students? “Remember that you have many gifts and talents so work hard, be respectful, and make sure your teachers like you. ‘If you do your best, God will do the rest!’ We wish Drew the best of luck at Gonzaga College High school. Both Drew and Clara will be in our prayers!
