MODERN TEXTILE INDUSTRY

In 1950's modern industrial system was started. The first among the Indian

industries functioned under the factory system was cotton textile industry. However, the

birth of the industry established at TORT GLOUSTAR' near Calcutta with English

capital. However almost all the later firms were established Bombay. The abundance of

capital and credit facilities' relatively cheap and speedy means of transport, existing yarn

trade with China were some of the factors that lead to the concentration of the industry in

the Bombay region. The progress of the industry was slow in the initial stage. But it grew

by leaps and bounds in the subsequent years, spurred by the demand created by world

wars and an expanding world.

Understanding the Chemistry of Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (or: What to do when

high-vacuum surface science and femto second lasers don’t give useful results.)

Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) are of interest as a lower cost and faster

production alternative to silicon photovoltaic’s in the simplest description, DSSCs

transform sunlight to electricity using a dye monolayer at the interface between TiO2 27

Page 28: 9.10.10

nano-crystals and an organic electrolyte. Research on DSSCs has been increasing for

over 20 years, with over 100 groups worldwide contributing at some level.

Unfortunately, finding anything concrete in the >3000 papers on the subject can be

quite difficult. DSSCs have turned out to be much more complex than initially

anticipated. A typical DSSC cell now contains 9 intentional molecular components, along

with water and other more minor impurities (figure 1). This can be compared to 3

elements (silicon and two do pants) in the active layer of a silicon PV cell. The

components in DSSCs have been designed so that they interact, in known ways, to

improve function. Conceptual models and measurement techniques have tended to

assume that in all other ways the components are "non - interacting". Recently we and

others have found that the assumption of no interaction can be spectacularly false

Cutting division

Cutting a cake, dividing up the

property in an estate, determining the

borders in an international

dispute--such problems of fair

division are ubiquitous. Fair Division treats all these problems and many more through a

rigorous analysis of the well-known cake-cutting procedure.

Fair Division, unlike most research on fairness in the social sciences and

mathematics, is devoted solely to the analysis of constructive procedures for actually

28

dividing things up and resolving disputes, including indivisible items or issues, such as

the marital property in a divorce or sovereignty in an international dispute
