UMW News
The September meeting of our United
Methodist Women will include a
brunch and a program that will focus
on the “Women of the Bible.” The Bible
gives us so
many sto-
ries about
real faith-
ful women,
their journeys were not always easy,
but their faith guided them through.
The meeting/brunch is Tuesday, Sep-
tember 3rd at 10:00am and will be at
the home of Wanda Ohler. Please bring
a covered dish. What a great opportuni-
ty to fellowship with the women of our
church and learn about the United
Methodist Women. There is a sign-up
Bell Choir and Chancel Choir Fall Kickoff
sheet in the Visitor Area of the church
to help make planning easier for this
meeting.

In addition to the Clothing Rummage

ning to hold a bake sale which will

Mission Projects throughout
the year. As that date draws
nearer, baked goods will be
most welcome!

Children’s Play Area or on September
9 and 23, and October 7 between the
hours of 9 AM and Noon. Please see

Come Christians, Join to “Ring”! The Bell Choir begins rehearsal on September 4 at 6:00 PM. If you
can read music a little bit and think you may have fun playing bells, please contact Debbie Piper. It is a lot of
fun to be a part of this “ringing” ministry.
Do-Re-Me…The Chancel Choir will soon start to sing. Rehearsal starts on Wednesday, September 4, at
7:15 PM. Looking forward to a new season, we would love to have YOU come and sing with us! If you would
like to be a part of our choir, please see Sue Ann or any current member. Or just show up for rehearsal!
Christmas Cantata practice kicks off on Thursday, September 5 at 7:00 PM.
The Little Library Help Your Neighbor
Debbie Fritzly has been busy
checking on our Little
Library (in the front of the
church on main street) and
changing the books around.
As she points out, it is neces-
sary that the Little Library is filled with
interesting and up to date books to keep
people interested in reading Christian
genre But the best news is that the most
important book in the Little Library has
been taken—the Bible! This means we
have one more person out there reading
the words of our Lord. Our Little Library
is helping to spread the Good News in our
community, one book at a time! If you
would like to help support our Little Li-
brary, please talk with Debbie Fritzley.
Help Your Neighbor Sunday re-
sumes on September 1st, the first
Sunday of each month. All non-
perishable food items are most wel-
come but the Good Samaritan Center
is specifically in need of the following
items:
canned chicken (meats)
cereal
crackers
instant potatoes
instant side dishes (not mac &
cheese)
ramen noodle soups
Baskets are on both sides in the back
of the church for your contributions.
Thank you!
We want to help the area teachers
with school supplies for
high school students.
Please take a look at the
list below and see what
you might like to donate.
Questions? Please see Colleen Kalp
and Adam Warburton.

Too often we consider ministry from a human perspective. We ask, “What
ministry should we carry out and how do we achieve our goals?” The out-
comes are up to us. Success, however we might measure that, is the direct
result of our own efforts. But there is a great error in conceiving ministry
as our ministry. It is, in fact, the root problem with many ministries today.
“Ministry” is the on-going work of Jesus Christ, for which the church has been established.
The question we each need to ask, and the question we must ask as a church is, “What work
has Christ ordained for us to do? Is Jesus the living, reigning and active Lord in our lives, and
in the life of the church, or is he just a bystander waiting to see what we do? If we see Jesus as
little more than an outside influence with very little direct input, then we make the mistake of
thinking that it is up to us to achieve everything in life and in ministry. We tell ourselves that
Jesus started the engine but we’re now in charge of running the machine. That somehow it is
up to us to make Jesus relevant to the world. The best we can hope for in Christ is a sideline
cheerleader. He cheers us on but he is not involved in the game.
Jesus is alive and active in the world. We don’t make Jesus relevant…he IS relevant! Jesus is
engaged in our personal lives, and in the life and ministry of the church. The question is not,
“What should WE do.” The question we need to ask is “What is Jesus up to, and how are we
being called to get involved?”
Swiss theologian, Karl Bath said, “It is not Jesus Christ who needs our ministries; it is our
ministries that need Jesus Christ.” Jesus puts it in even simpler terms. He says, “Apart from
me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) By sharing in the life of Jesus, we share in God’s continu-
ing mission. Our ministry is not on behalf of Christ. Our ministry is in participation with
Christ.
As we enter this fall season, we will discuss ways in which we might reach our community for
Christ. We will talk about vision and mission and we will seek to develop new ways and new
ideas for ministry. This is the work to which the church has been called; to carry the Gospel
message, the Good News of Jesus Christ into the world. But in and through it all we must not
simply look to our own ideas as to what ministries we should develop or specific plans we
should set in motion without first asking, “Lord, where are you at work and how do you want us
to participate in ministry with you?”
The church was established by Christ. The church is a God-ordained, God-breathed institution.
Christ remains active and engaged in the life of the church, and in the life of ministry to which
we are each called. God has a specific mission and specific plans for this congregation. It is not
something that we have to guess at or go looking for it. God will reveal His plans for us as we
pray and seek His direction.
Jesus’ ministry is not merely a past influence that reaches into the present. It is at once past,
present and future. By sharing in the life of Jesus, we thereby share in God’s continuing minis-
try. We are displaced from the throne of “our” ministry and invited into the work of Christ in
HIS ministry.
Blessings All,
Pastor Bob

Many thanks for the cards, well wishes, and goody
treats given to our mother, Alice
McCloy. She enjoys reading and
rereading your cards, and the
treats are an added bonus for her.
We appreciate your remembrance
and prayers for our mother.

Dear Friends: I wanted to send a thank you a while
back for the bag of wonderful things (Hope Angel Bag).
I read a lot of it to Bruce thru the last 5 months of his
life. The thing that mattered and only
matters to me is God and saving someone
who never new Jesus, and I did that with
Bruce. He in the last five months could-
n’t wait for me to read the Bible to him.
He then accepted the Lord and that’s the only peace
through this. The bag helped us so much. Thank you
from my heart.
—Love always, Tammy Steban

Women’s Ministry
"So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists,
the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service,
so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity
in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become
mature, attaining to the whole measure the fullness of Christ." Ephesians 4:11-13
Ladies ~
We are called to be equipped for service. We are called to be part of building up the body of Christ.
We are called to learn and mature. We are called to become like Christ. We are called to be disciples.
Join us in Women's Ministry this year as we continue, together, to become disciples
who can make other disciples…who will then make disciples... Sharing and living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Join us as we get to know one another better and support and encourage one another
to "run with perseverance the race set out for us."
We meet the third Monday evening of each Month from September through May.
We also try to do an outreach/service event each quarter.
If you would like to attend, and need childcare, please let me know and we will arrange it.
Women have always had an important role in the church - and today is no different.
Please prayerfully consider making this time a priority in your already busy lives. We are called to be disciples - and it is easier to do TOGETHER.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me! Jill Ellson 724.493.8189

Theology As Explained by Children
The first book of the Bible is Guinessis, in which Adam & Eve were created from an apple tree. Noah's wife was called Joan of Ark. Lot's wife was a pillar of salt by day and a ball of fire by night. Samson slayed the Philistines with the axe of the Apostles.
Unleavened bread is bread made without ingredients. Moses went to the top of Mt. Cyanide to get the 10 commandments. The 7th commandment is 'Thou shalt not admit adultery.' Joshua let the Hebrew in the battle of Geritol. David fought the Finkelsteins, a race of people who lived in Biblical times. Solomon has 300 wives and 700 porcupines. Jesus was born because Mary had an immaculate contraption. The people who followed Jesus were called the 13 decibels. The Epistles were the wives of the Apostles. One of the opossums was St. Matthew. Paul preached holy acrimony, which is another name for marriage. A Godly person should have only one wife. This is called monotony.
A minister dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a guy who's dressed in sun-glasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket, and jeans.
Saint Peter addresses this guy, 'Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?'
The guy replies, 'I'm Joe Cohen, taxi driver, of Noo Yawk City.'
St. Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the taxi driver, 'Take this silken robe and golden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.'
The taxi driver goes into Heaven with his robe and staff, and it's the minister's turn. He stands erect and booms out, 'I am Joseph Snow, pastor of Calvary Church for the last forty-three years.'
St Peter consults his list.
He says to the minister, 'Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.'
'Just a minute,' says the minister. 'That man was a taxi driver, and he gets a silken robe and golden staff. How can this be?'
'Up here, we work by results,' says Saint Peter. 'While you preached, people slept, while he drove, people prayed.'
