2. President’s Report Ian WallaceSeason 2014–15 ended on a positive note with our 4th XI winning the flag. After finishing top the yearbefore and losing both finals, this year they won three very close low scoring finals. Peter Sist has done agreat job as their captain and thoroughly deserved the celebration. Thanks to all the veterans who helpedout during the year when we were short in the 3rds and 4ths. The mix of veterans and juniors works wellfor both parties.

The 2nd XI also made the finals but would be disappointed to go out in straight sets. The 1st XI missed thefinals by a game after a slow start, which was a disappointing result. The 3rd XI also missed the finalsmainly due to regular team changes because of unavailabilities through the grades.

Justin Graham in his first year as coach led the club well with good support from Daniel Gledhill.Training standards improved over the season and they also helped the juniors out with coaching sessions.

Thanks to everyone on the committee for their enormous amount of work. The social and fundraisingcommittees did a great job with some very enjoyable events and the Pink Stumps day enabled some ofour sponsors and parents to have a hit. We intend to have a six-a-side day next year to honour BenCookson who sadly passed away recently. The ladies day was a great success with lots of partnersattending and enjoying the champagne and cakes. We have so many young kids attending games thatcouncil had to extend the fence in front of the pavilion. Our afternoon teas were once again the highlightsof my Saturdays and Robbie and Zee did an enormous amount of work. Sadly Robbie and Colin Cust ourtreasurer are resigning from their roles. Their competence, cheerfulness and dedication will beimpossible to replace and we thank them for their great service to the club in these roles. Colin intends toumpire again next year and no doubt we will still see Robbie regularly.

We are fortunate to have two of the best club umpires in Colin Cust and Bruce Bennett and thank themfor their efforts. Dylan Roberts again did a good job looking after the Craig Shield team. VaughanRoberts in his roles as Scorer, Secretary and Delegate continues to do a great job. Tim Corneycoordinated the veteran teams again with lots of enthusiasm. The ECA is setting up a veterans’competition next year so we will be leaving the Box Hill Reporter competition. My thanks go to PeterWhite for his efforts running the BHRDCA veterans’ competition while Kew CC has been involved.

John Doyle has been our passionate council liaison again and is currently negotiating the upgrade of ournets. We are fortunate to have some of the best facilities in Sub District and we thank council for theirefforts and investment.

Thanks to all our sponsors for their valuable contributions and I encourage all our members to supportthem.

Finally thanks to all our supporters for their ongoing support. It is wonderful to see so many partners andkids attending regularly and creates a great atmosphere.

3. Treasurer’s Report Colin CustThe financial year resulted in a surplus of $5,233 compared with $6,606 last year. This was again anexcellent result with a $7,000 increase in income from social activities and a strong sponsorshipcampaign. Expenses in total were in line with the previous season.Cricket Victoria’s allocation to the club ($9,000 this year) will cease at the end of 2015–16 season andwill have a major impact on the Club finances. Grants from Cricket Victoria in the 2013–2014season included a once off $4,000 contribution towards the pavilion renovation. The Committee aims to maintain a balance of at least $60,000 in invested funds to ensure the continuingviability of the Club. Interest earned on invested funds is a major contributor to the operating surplus.

4. Partnership with the City of Boroondara John DoyleKew Cricket Club has maintained a strong a pro-active relationship with City of Boroondara staff duringthe season 2014–15 which has been of mutual benefit. We have worked closely with our new curator,Mitch Hewitt and with other staff members, David Nankervis and Leesa Ray. We have also receivedgreat support from the Manager of Parks and Gardens, Mark Dornau. The support our Club receives fromthe council is evident every time we attend Victoria Park to use our playing and pavilion facilities.

Significant issues during the season included:· Quality of wickets prepared by Mitch and his excellent level of consultation with our Club;· Commitment of the council to provide an upgraded outfield on the south oval for season 2015–16;· Commitment of the council to upgrading the practice facilities on both ovals;· the council convening a joint meeting of all tenant clubs to discuss and review key issues at Victoria

Park; and· the installation of fencing and gates in front of the north oval pavilion to enhance the safety of

spectators in that area.

I also wish to acknowledge the efforts of Heath Crawford, Coordinator of Turf Management at the City ofBoroondara, who has devoted considerable time and attention to an upgrade of the practice wicket nets onthe north oval. Heath recently met with our coach, Justin Graham, and me at the ground to discuss plans. It is hoped that the new nets will be available for the start of the upcoming season. Our club intends tomake a substantial contribution to this upgrade.

We look forward to continuing a strong and harmonious relationship with the council during the 2015–16season.

6. First XI Report6.1. First XI Captain’s Report Justin GrahamSeason 2014–15 was one filled with many adjectives. Exciting, disappointing, tough, tiring but above allelse, fun!

We welcomed new players to the club in new Captain / Coach Justin Graham, former Victorian bowlerSteve Gilmour, Englishman Callum Lockett and Dale Sidebottom.

The First XI played some very good cricket and apart from 3 games, was absolutely in winning positionsduring the other games. It just goes to show you that you can never take a cricket game for granted andmust be hard on each other and close out all games. If this was done, we no doubt would’ve playedfinals. However, we were unable to do so on some occasions and this cost us badly, finishing 7 pointsoutside the top six.

Congratulations to Steven Gilmour, Callum Lockett, Iain Stewart, and youngsters Josh Mannix, EthyanChiodo and Jack Cubley who all made their 1st XI debut at some stage during the season.

Throughout the season we had three centurions. Dale Sidebottom made 119no in round 1 vs Werribee. Afantastic knock of patience and counter punching that nearly got us over the line. A side note on thisinnings would tell you that this was Dale’s first ever senior cricket century; something that most of us arestill amazed by.

Young Englishman Callum Lockett, very raw in cricket years and experience in Australian conditions, made a superb 142 in our Round 2 clash with Sunshine CC. Some very lusty blows coupled with a steadyhead when Sunshine’s bowlers were attacking him with the ball and mentally.

Steven Baldwin was our third centurion of the season when he compiled at gritty 100 vs Preston in round4. Splendid straight, cover and on drives dominated his innings and helped us into a match winningposition after day 1.

Whilst not a century, vice-captain Daniel Gledhill’s 96 vs Coburg in Round 12 was noteworthy. A verycontrolled innings coupled with some aggressive stroke play that was deserving of three figures.

Bowling highlights of note throughout the season were Steve Gilmour’s 5 wickets in Round 2 vsSunshine CC (5-27), vs Preston CC in Round 4 (5-23). Steven led from the front all season with the balland was extremely unlucky not to get more 5 wicket hauls as he beat the bat with the new ball time aftertime after time.

Andrew Field produced a magnificent spell of off spin bowling in our stirring win vs Ivanhoe CC inround 9. Claiming crucial wickets throughout his spell, it was at the death where he did all the damage, claiming 3 wickets in 6 balls to get us the points in a very tight match.

Congratulations to all players that represented the club throughout the season in the 1st XI. We made hugestrides by the end of the year and we look forward to season 2015–16 with much optimism.

Lastly but certainly not least, on behalf of all the players, can I thank the committee, the players partnersand kids, club volunteers, curators, who all played a part in helping the team perform to the best of theirabilities and made the Kew CC such an enjoyable place to play.

7. Second X1 Report7.1. Second X1 Captain’s Report Nick PadburyAfter finally winning that elusive 2nd XI Premiership the previous year the 2nd XI were looking to onceagain progress deep into the finals in the 2014–15 season.

We were fortunate enough to hold onto the majority of the Premiership winning side but at the same timewe also added a number of quality cricketers to our playing list this season, which meant that competitionfor positions was always going to be hotly contested. The addition of experienced players such as TimStewart, Iain Stewart and the return of Gareth Oakley meant that we had strengthened our pace attack andalso our top order batting.

Another pleasing aspect of our season was the fact that many of our younger guys such as Jack Cubley,Eythan Chiodo, Nathan Boucher and Josh Mannix were given an opportunity and took their chances atvarious stages throughout the year and showed that they were definitely capable of making an impact atthis level and hopefully in higher grades in the not too distant future.

We reached the Christmas break in a strange position of having 3 wins (1 outright) a tie and 3 losses fromour first 7 games. The clear highlight of the first half of the season was winning outright againstSunshine where we were able to bowl them out for 52 in the first innings and for a paltry 13 in the 2ndinnings with Tom Kerr taking 7/8 in a remarkable spell.

After the Christmas break we continued our march to the finals only dropping one match against Altona. At the conclusion of the regular season we had achieved our goal of reaching the finals finishing with 8wins, 1 tie and 4 losses which meant that we finished in 4th position and a Qualifying final against localrivals Balwyn who had finished third.

Our first final was to be played at Balwyn who we had defeated earlier in the season in a very closetussle. After winning the toss we decided to bat on what was a typically good Balwyn wicket. Ourbatsmen toiled away manfully but were unable to build enough strong partnerships throughout the inningswhich meant that we were always on the back foot. Eventually we were bowled out in the 79th over for220 with Matthew Bernet 78 and Dylan Roberts 32 the best contributors.

We were happy with our score but knew there was work to be done as Balwyn had an experienced battingline up that was always difficult to get through. Our defence didn’t start as well as planned with one oftheir openers taking a hold of our bowlers to reach 52 within a blink of an eye. We eventually took hiswicket and also another soon after to have them 2/66 however it was from that point on that we failed tocapture another wicket and Balwyn reached 2/224 in the 81st over.

Whilst disappointing we had to continue to move on and take advantage of being the “Lucky Loser”which meant that we had another final the following week against top of the ladder Werribee.

The Semi Final at Werribee started with us losing the toss and bowling on a typically dry Werribeewicket. We started well with Iain Stewart striking in the early overs to have them 1/8. Our quick bowlerscontinued to bowl well all day and were rewarded accordingly and by the end of the day we had bowledthem out for 169 in the 69th over. Iain Stewart was the best of the bowlers taking 5/56 and was ablysupported by Tim Stewart 3/40,

In reply we once again failed to build partnerships and wickets constantly fell throughout our innings dueto some solid bowling from the Werribee side. Eventually we were bowled out for 122 with MatthewBernet top scoring with 25.

Whilst it was disappointing to be bundled out of the finals in straight sets it was probably a true reflectionof where our season was throughout the majority of the year. For some reason our batting just wasn’t asconsistent as it had been for many years with not one of our batsman scoring a century and only a handfulof half centuries scored for the year.

Congratulations to Nick Cross who had a terrific year with the bat and deservedly was awarded the ColinCust Batting award for his 371 runs @ 31 and also to the ever improving James Wilkinson who took outthe John Doyle Bowling for his 30 wickets @ 16.6. Congratulations also go to Matthew Bernet who was

Kew Cricket Club Inc. 93rd Annual Report Season 2014–15

Page 12

named the 2nd XI Champion Player after another consistent year with 367 runs @ 28.2 and reluctantlywicket keeping for the majority of the season.

In closing I would just like to thank the committee in particular the retiring Colin Cust and Robbie Brownfor all their tireless work and support around the club this year. Without these two tireless clubmen wewould struggle to play each week and it is something that none of us take for granted so we thank youenormously.

I would also like to thank the people who helped throughout the year, most notably Vaughan Roberts forkeeping us on the straight and narrow with regards to Umpires reports, John Doyle for all his work aroundthe club and Bernie Anderson for his work in keeping the MyCricket scores up to date.

I would also like to thank Justin Graham and Daniel Gledhill and the senior members of the 1st XI fortheir support of the 2nd XI in general and look forward to next season where hopefully we can go forwardanother step next year.

8. Third X1 Report8.1. Third X1 Captain’s Report Piran ReitzeLike the season before it, season 2014-15 was as much about developing the clubs young players, as itwas results for the 3rd XI. Although the team only recorded 4 wins and 2 draws from its thirteen outingswe were in touch of the finals right until the last two games of the season.

Once again it was pleasing to see so many new faces coming into the team; pushing up from the 4ths orbeing new to the club. New players such as Chirag Bhargava, James Hermiston, Glenn Gonsalves, NickRichardson, Thomas Carroll and Kynan Kett all came in and made strong contributions to the team.

Further to this, and probably most pleasing for the club, was the number of Kew Junior cricketers makingtheir way through the clubs system. Lucas Agnoletto, Marcus McMahon and Lachlan Bangs represent afew such players who along with an increasing number of others are making the successful transitionfrom our junior setup.

As one would expect having such a young team, performances across the season varied enormously. However for every scorecard we would like to forget there was at least one we can be extremely proud of.A couple of the more memorable moments from the 3rd XI season were:

Round 4 v Preston

Having only recorded a washed out draw from the first three games of the season a David Crock led 3rd

XI got on the board emphatically recording a win over second placed Preston. Having set Preston a chaseof 283 Kew skittled the visitors for 125 – Matt Thomas hitting 70 and taking 4 wickets and Crockykicking off his captaincy career in style.

Round 10 v Altona

A strong fight back with the ball saw the team take Altona from 1/82 and flying to have them all out for147 in the 69th over. In reply the Kew innings couldn’t have got off to a worse start with a miracleneeded at 5/26. Before a 53 run partnership between Tom Carroll (in his first 3rd XI game) and the everyoung Peter Langtry gave the team hope. But once they had both departed with the score at 95 and only 2wickets in hand enter Lachlan Bangs.

Listed as 12th man (having been at school cricket) and having come down to check how the team got on.He was told to pad up and get out there and I’m not sure who was more surprised him or me seeingwalking out towards me in the middle. Anyway thank god he did – blasting a mature 36 to help see theteam eventually win 9 down.

Batting wise the team struggled to start our innings, often being three or four down for not many and thegame well and truly ahead of us. Matthew Thomas, Matthew Anderson and Glenn Hopper all toiled awaywith the bat recording over 100 runs for the season. David Crock proved the lone hand for the team withbat, digging the side out with important knocks time and time again, scoring 280 runs for the season at animpressive average of 40 and top score of 87*.

Our bowlers much like our batsmen had an overall patchy season. Whilst all capable of producing goodovers and spells, consistency and learning to bowl in partnership were aspects of the game that willimprove for the side in seasons to come.

First year player Kynan Kett led the wickets taking 15 wickets at an average of 14.2. Other players tosnare over ten were Piran Reitze with 12 wickets, and Matt Thomas 11.

All in all, although a tough season, 2014-15 will hopefully be looked back upon as an important one indeveloping a number of our young players. The challenge now for the club will be in installing someolder members as mentors to lead and teach the next wave of players. Yet again my thanks go out toPeter Langtry, Ian Wallace and Jim Armstrong all of whom have served this role amazingly over the lastfew years continually giving our young players people to look up to and learn from.

As always thank you to Colin Cust and Bruce Bennett for their support as club umpires. Thank you aswell to Vaughan Roberts and Robbie Brown who do a power of work on, and before game day every

week. To the rest of the committee thank you for the often forgotten work you all put in behind thescenes to keep the place running and make my job a lot easier. To the captains of the other XIs thank youfor your efforts and support as well as the aforementioned David Crock who helped captain the side atvarious times throughout the season.

Finally a sincere thank you to Wal, Bags, Kelly, Col, Gilly, Jus and Grooch for all of your guidance andsupport over the last three years – I really appreciated it.

9. 4th XI Report9.1. 4th XI Captain’s Report Peter SistIt is with an enormous amount of satisfaction and pride that I present the 4th XI report for season 2014-15.Having been so close last year we were determined to make amends this year and as fate would have it;we achieved the ultimate success with a well-deserved premiership.

Pre-season, Jimmy Xenos, Phil Hyde and I knew we would be able to field a strong side each week with anumber of players from the junior club availing themselves for selection. Under Phil’s tutelage andleadership many of these lads have already developed a hard edge and are prepared for the mental battleof senior cricket. Similarly, many of our vets cricketers came in and out of our team at various stagesthroughout the season bringing with them not only ability but a great attitude as well.

After the first five rounds we were three and two and in the middle row of the ladder. After some verydubious LBW decisions and a loss at Williamstown in round six saw us fall outside the top six. PlentyValley beat us in round seven and we went to the Christmas break two games out of the top six.Ironically, at the post mortem after this game, we agreed that we were actually in better shape than wewere this time last year. Three of our batsmen had accumulated 250 plus runs and our openers, Bont(Alexander Peel) and Beaser (Ian Atkin) always seemed to get us away to good starts. Hyde, Hopper,Fitzgerald and Xenos provided solid resistance in the middle order and our tail always wagged whenneeded. Our fielding was consistent but not great and with a good mix of mediums and slow bowlerscoupled with the great Peter Langtry (Groove) we felt positive about the second half.

A wash out against Balwyn in round 8 didn’t help our cause, nor did a nine wicket loss against Ivanhoethe following week. With three wins from nine games, it was always going to be a monumental task tomake the top six from this position.

Two comfortable wins followed in rounds 10 and 11. Fitzy and Nathan Bernett starred against Altonaand Beaser and Jimmy Xenos batted superbly against Roxburgh Park. Round 12 saw us take on Coburgin a game we had to win. I arrived a touch late to this game and found us 7 for 110 requiring another 60.I was a very proud father this day watching Will Sist bat out of his skin to see us over the line. We werein the top six.

A comfortable win against Yarraville in the last home and away round saw us finish fourth. Bont, Xenosand Aitken our best performers in this game.

Week one of the finals saw us take on Ivanhoe away. On a very good wicket we could only manage 109batting first. Tommy Carroll and Glen Hopper our best performers with the bat. Everything would haveto go right for us to win this one. During the warm-up on day two, Marino Bovo took a blinder and thisprovided the momentum we needed to bowl Ivanhoe out. Langers bowled superbly; we held our catchesand bowled the opposition out for 97; a great win; Peter Langtry outstanding with 5 wickets.

Week two of the finals saw us take on Plenty Valley, a team I had never beaten. Winning the toss, weelected to bat first and Bont and Fitzy got us off to a flyer. After 12 over we were none for 60 and flying.Six overs later saw us collapse to be 5 for 65. Posting a reasonable target from this position was going tobe tough. That said, Chirag, Hyde and Aitken all knuckled down and we ended up with 148. Whatfollowed the next day was to that point, my most enjoyable day of cricket ever, and I’ve played a few!Plenty Valley got off to a great start and at one point were 2 for 95 needing another 50 to win. PlentyValley then did a Kew and lost 6 wickets for very few. One of these was an outstanding run out fromChirag which lifted the side. With them requiring 4 for victory with two wickets in the shed it was aneasy call to throw the ball to Langers. With the field up, Groove got those magnificent little outs goingand in no time number 10 nicks to Hyde and number 11 nicks the last ball of the game to Ben Smith atsecond slip, who took it brilliantly. We then treated the 300 strong Kew families celebrating the openingto their footy season with the loudest most impromptu version of our club song ever. We were in theGrand Final.

Playing the grand final as a one day game was, from my point of view, a terrible decision. That said, itplayed perfectly into our hands as we knew we were good at restricting teams. Brunswick won the toss

Kew Cricket Club Inc. 93rd Annual Report Season 2014–15

Page 20

and batted first. All of our bowlers bowled well and the fielding was brilliant. Wickets fell at regularintervals and half the job was done before the compulsory closure. Tommy Carroll a stand out with 3 for4, the last wicket a brilliant catch from Hyde. We required 137 runs. As they’d done all year, Bont andBease got us off to a great start. Aitken’s innings was particularly impressive given he had so many newfriends in the stands! Hopper and Agnoletto provided excellent support at three and four. A minorhiccup occurred when we lost three quick wickets requiring another 20 but with Xenos and Langers at thecrease and Smithy to come, I was highly confident. Sure enough Jimmy and Groove peeled off thetwenty required with some quality shots off a reasonable attack. I will never forget the sound of that lastball flying off Jimmy’s new bat (TNF) and over cow corner. Exceptional effort from all players! Wedeserved to win and we did and I will never forget my last game as captain for the mighty Kew CricketClub Fourth Eleven.

It would be remiss of me not to mention two unsung heroes during our finals campaign; Chirag Bhargavaand Ben Smith. At times, I’m sure that these guys were uncertain of their roles and I’ll wear that. Thissaid, without their efforts, we would not have won the flag. Of that, I am sure.

My sincere thanks go to Jimmy Xenos as vice-captain and Phil Hyde for all your hard work and support. These guys are brilliant to play cricket with! To the vets that came in and out of the side at differentstages to ensure we remained competitive, I thank Peter Crock, Andrew Macowski, John Flynn, PaulHughes and Marino Bovo. Marino, your role during the finals cannot be underestimated!

To all of the players that I had the pleasure of playing with this season, I thank you as well. To Jussie andGrooch, thanks for your support and guidance, same to Wallo and the committee for giving me theprivilege of captaining a Kew side.

This said, for a club with our playing lists, in my opinion, we have underperformed this year. The 4thsproved what can happen when everyone buys in. Let’s get behind the leadership of the club and pushhard for four flags next season!

Kew boys we are magic!

As usual we enjoyed ourselves with Jim Xenos’efforts to play a game whilst hosting his son’s birthday party at his home the season highlight.

Next season we will be joining the new Eastern Cricket Association Veterans and I would like to extendmy thanks to Peter White for his efforts running the Box Hill Reporter Competition. A lot of our veteransended up playing in the senior 3rds and 4ths when they were short and I thank them for helping out. Theveterans are a very important part of our club now and having veterans at training and 6-a-side and socialevents helps both socially and economically. Thanks to everyone for their efforts and I look forward toattempting to do it again next season.

The elevation of a numberof Vets players to the senior 4th X1 throughout the season made room for some new players to come intothe Vets side. The season was an up and down affair not winning as many as we would have liked butbeing competitive nonetheless. We again had to abandon a game to rain and had to move another toXavier due to an unplayable wicket. All in all, the season could be described as unremarkable. The newadditions brought a renewed vigour and everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves both on and off thefield – with no major injuries bodily or otherwise to report!

There were a number of significant individual performances throughout the season. The bowlingaverages were won by A Makowski who, despite coming second in the batting averages, bowled veryconsistently all season. The batting averages were won again by D Cronin who was the standoutbatsmen, not only for Kew but for the whole competition – being chosen again, for the fourth season inrow, to represent BHRDCA in the representative side. There is some suggestion that he may be bettersuited to batting in higher grade!

We look forward to continuing our success in C grade next year and the bedding down of new players.Once again we thank the club committee, coach and players for their support and comradeship over theseason. We are all looking forward to season 2015–16!

12. JG Craig XI12.1.JG Craig XI Coach’s report Dylan RobertsAfter a prolonged trial process with Balwyn and Box Hill, we selected a squad of 15 solid cricketers forthe J.G Craig Shield competition for 2015.

While we had little success in this tournament, the boys were competitive and ‘were in’ all of our games –unfortunately it seemed that the critical moments often went the way of the other team.

In round one we had a narrow loss to Preston who triumphed 8/174 over 9/152 – our strongest performerswith the bat were opener Jake Sticca (30) and Liam Myott (40 off 50 balls). We were quite tidy with theball in stages but did not make good use of the new ball, which allowed Preston the opportunity to takerisks during the middle overs.

In round two we faced a very intimidating Balwyn bowling attack (including three premier cricketers) andwere knocked over for 41 with Tommy Carroll showing a lot of fight to score 23 off 62 and be the lastman standing after coming in at 4. With the ball Jake Sticca took three wickets but Balwyn made ourscore easily.

We played Brunswick in round three and produced a solid effort with the ball to hold them to 8/132.Willems, Hardman and Khetarpal bowled very tightly and helped us restrict Brunswick by bowling oneside of the wicket consistently. Unfortunately we were fooled by the weather (and groundskeeper!) –with plenty of time left we began to attack in an attempt to get a result as we were told fairly confidentlythe game was unlikely to finish. We were all out for 100 and the promised rain never fell, however it wasanother competitive effort by our boys.

Round four saw us make the trip to Plenty Valley where we again fell short against a good side, werestricted them of 145 but could not get into gear with the bat – losing key wickets just as players werebeginning to get into some form and rhythm. We finished on 6 for 106 with McNally (22), Easton (24),Sticca (12) and Olley (26) making good starts but ultimately failing to put together the partnership weneeded to win the game.

Our next two games were washed out against Coburg and Ivanhoe, robbing us of the chance to get a winin the competition against two teams of similar standards.

While we did not get a win the coaching group (myself, Ben Smith, Hugh Wilkinson and a cameo fromKelly Masters) worked the group hard and we are satisfied that the majority of them will have come outbetter players – there was a real focus on some of the basics of cricket, running between the wickets andfielding, as that’s where we felt our performances suffered – not on batting and bowling talent.

A huge thank you to Hugh Wilkinson for being our willing scorer and team manager yet again, thistournament wouldn’t run smoothly for us without his help. I would also like to thank Colin Cust andRobbie Brown for their help throughout the tournament.
