Father Rick’s Reflections . . . We made it! We finally got to the celebration of Easter! We never got here last year because of the pandemic and quarantining. But this year we got to Easter. We are greeted with a wonderful story about Mary Magdalene and other women are the first

witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus. Now, that is quite a story! Keep in mind that in the time of Jesus in Middle Eastern society, women were not regarded as reliable witnesses – a woman’s testimony in court was heavily discounted. It did not help that the story of Mary Magdalene being possessed by demons would not have helped her credibility. So, why was this story told? Because it was a powerful, consistent oral tradition among the earliest disciples. This was an autobiographical memory in which stories of personal experience are passed on, often colored by the emotional interpretation of those who experienced the events which shapes the details recalled in the passing of the account. The absence of Jesus’ body does not necessarily mean that Jesus was raised. There are more ordinary explanations that come to mind – the disciples went to the wrong tomb, or the body was somewhere else, they lied about the missing body, or someone stole the body and hid it. If Jesus’ body had been available, it makes sense that those who opposed the teaching of Jesus’ resurrection would have found it or produced it had they stolen it. If the disciples had taken the body, sooner or later the body would have come to light and the location of his dead body would have put an end to the claims of resurrection. However, in our gospel today, Mary Magdalene reports the empty tomb to Peter and the other disciple. The two of them run to the tomb. “Then, the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.” There is the confusion of the empty tomb, Peter and Mary Magdalene not “yet understanding the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead” and the Beloved Disciple who “saw and believed.” The Beloved Disciple alone initially recognizes the spiritual meaning of the empty tomb, but his understanding will soon the be the foundation of the whole church, spurred by the later encounters with the risen Lord. It truly became the central message of this new community of disciples. We not only discover an empty tomb, but we encounter the risen Lord each and every time we gather at the table of the Lord. He is truly risen! ALLELUIA!

As I write these few words early in Holy Week, we are in preparation for the events of Triduum. Even though we are back in the Church, there is still not the complete celebration of these days because of the pandemic. But, there is always next year. There are some things that people are missing – the sign of peace, receiving Communion under both species of bread and wine, coming to church without masks just to name a few. I continue to encourage us to be hopeful for all those things to happen in the coming months, but we are not there yet. Please continue to practice good COVID protocols and keep safe. We cannot let our guard down for a minute. I want to express my thanks to everyone who helped to make our celebrations during Holy Week so memorable. To Sr Ann and the art & environment committee for their transforming the church each of the days of Triduum. My thanks to the lectors who stepped up for extra duty this past week with the Passion readings on Palm Sunday and Good Friday as well as the extra readings at the Easter Vigil. A special thanks to the ushers who not only helped with the people coming to celebrate, some who have not been in church in a year, but also for those who helped with the Chrism Mass last Tuesday. I hear only great accolades from the diocese for our kindness and welcome to come to St Thomas Aquinas. On behalf on the entire staff, I want to wish everyone a blessed and happy Easter. This is truly the season of new life. May we let Jesus’ light shine always in our lives!

Easter Sunday April 4, 2021

Family Perspective-by Bud Ozar

That first Easter morning was confusing. Jesus was missing and Mary Magdalene, Peter and John “did not know” what to do. In family life there are confusing moments when “we don’t know” what to do. Like the apostles we are Easter people when we believe and trust in each other even when all seems lost.

Stewardship Reflections

“Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.” Colossians 3:2

On this day we thank God for His Son, Jesus, who died, rose and opened the gates of heaven for us. We celebrate and sing “Alleluia.” Let’s try to keep the joy of this Easter season in our hearts throughout the year! Pray daily and listen for how God is calling each of us to joyfully use our gifts to fulfill His salvation plan.

Individual Rite of Penance (aka “confessions”)

Following COVID-19 guidelines: masks worn at all times and social distancing.

A reconciliation room is setup in the church narthex, with one priest available to celebrate the sacrament.

While waiting to celebrate the sacrament, you may either wait in your vehicles or stand outside practicing social distancing.

The Journey Within

I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see.

Sinning is a lot like being lost. When one is lost, one often

cannot find the way out. Jesus reminds us that when we

are lost in the world of sin, he is there to remove our blindness so that we can see our way out.

Let today be the day that we find our way out.

St. Thomas Aquinas wishes you a Blessed Easter Season
