different times during the year. The decision to establish

December 25 as the "official" date of Christ's birth was

made by Pope Julius I in the fourth century AD, hoping to

replace the pagan celebration with the Christian one, since

this date coincided with the pagan celebrations of Winter

Solstice with the Return of the Sun Gods occurring

    throughout the world.

Numerous Christmas traditions derive from the earlier

pagan celebrations. Yule, celebrating the birth or rebirth of a

god of light, made use of fire, both in candles and the

burning of a Yule log. The Christmas tree has its origins in

the practice of bringing a live tree into the home so the

wood spirits would have a place to keep warm during the

cold winter months. Bells were hung in the limbs so you

could tell when an appreciative spirit was present. Food and

treats were hung on the branches for the spirits to eat and a

five-pointed star, the pentagram, symbol of the five

elements, was placed atop the tree.

In Northern Europe, the year's longest night is called

"Mother Night" for it was in darkness the goddess Freya (or

Frigga) labored to bring the Light to birth once more. The

Young Sun, Baldur, who controlled the sun and rain and

brings fruitfulness to the fields, was born. Frigga's blessing

is invoked for all birthing women, and a white candle that

last burned on the solstice is a charm to provide a safe

    delivery.

The mistletoe's association with the holidays come from the

myths of the goddess Freya (also known as Frigga). The

plant's white berries were formed from Frigga's tears of

mourning when her beloved son Baldur was killed by a dart

made from mistletoe. Some versions of the story of Baldur's

death end happily. Baldur is restored to life, and the

goddess Frigga is so grateful that she reverses the

reputation of the baleful plant, making it a symbol of peaceand love and promising a kiss to all who pass under it.

Read more about the goddess Freya and other legends

    about mistletoe.

Throughout the world gods and goddesses of light were

being born during the Winter Solstice. The Egyptian

goddess Isis delivered Horus whose symbol was the winged

Sun. Mithras, the Unconquered Sun of Persia, was born

during the solstice, as was Ameratsu, the Japanese Goddess

of the Sun. Rhea gave birth to Saturn (the Father of Time),

Hera conceives Hephaestus, and Qetzalcoatl, Lucina ("LittleLight") also celebrate birthdays at this time. Lucia, saint or

Goddess of Light, is honored from Italy to Sweden,

crowned with candles to carry us through the darkness.

Sarasvati, Queen of Heaven in India, is honored during

    Yule-tide.

The Solstice is also a time of plenty. The Hopi Kachinas

return to the Earth during the solstice, and the Deer

Mothers dance for the fertility of the earth. The hearth fires

of Hestia (known as the Roman goddess Vesta) are

quenched and then rekindled. The "first fruits" festival,

Kwanzaa, is held to honor the seven major deities of

    Yoruba.

And Winter Solstice is a time for visions. Rhiannon, a Welsh

incarnation of Epona, the Celtic Mare Goddess, rides

through the dreams of her people by night, transporting

them to the place between the worlds where they can createtheir own visions, giving them a gift of what they need

most, helping them to make real their dreams. In Scotland,

the last night of the year is Wish Night, a holiday when

wishes made for the coming year are at their most powerful.

    Night of Hecate, ancient Greece

    =======================

Hecate Night Begins at sunset; the threefold goddess ofgoddess is celebrated.

At Hecates main Carian sanctuary at Lagina near

Stratonicea the ritual carrying of a sacred key was part of

Her coven. According to a hymn to Selene-Hecate, She

keeps the keys that 'open the bars of Kerberus.' Sophocles

wrote of a key on the tongue as an element of the Eleuisian

mysteries. In Greece, this day was celebrated as the Night

of Hecate, known to the Romans as Diana Lucifera. Diana

had three forms, Luna in the Heavens, Diana on Earth, and

    Hecate in the Underworld.

Diana was the goddess of the moon and was often calledDiana Lucifera, Diana the Bringer of Light.

The Greeks knew her as Artemis, the twin sister of Apollo,

and daughter of Zeus and Leto.

She was born under Mount Cynthus in Delos and hence was

    also called Cynthia and Delia.

She was the goddess of hunting, carried a bow and quiver

like her brother, and was especially fond of music and

    dance.

[Virgin Mother] Diana was never conquered by love, and

submitted to no man; hence she was the goddess of a

chaste moon and, except for her family, tolerated only

female companions. Her priestesses were all chaste.

The From-a-far Powerful was portrayed most of the time

in triple statues with triple faces. (f.e.in Aigina).

She carries torches, whips, daggers and keys. Hecate is

most of the time followed by dogs arms (reference to Kali,

    Indian goddess).

In later times the Triple Hecate took on the form of a pillarcalled a Hecterion. One such statue depicts her with three

heads and six arms, bearing three torches and three sacred

emblems the Key, Rope, and Dagger. With her key to the

underworld, Hecate unlocks the secrets of the occult

mysteries and knowledge of the afterlife. The rope, which is

also a scourge or cord, symbolizes the umbilical cord of

rebirth and renewal. The Dagger is related to the curved

knife that cuts delusion and is a symbol of [ruling] power

    and judgment.

==========================================Description of Hecate in THE THEOGONY of Hesiod:

    (700 B.C.)

    ==========================================

Then the goddess Gaia through the love of the god

conceived and brought forth dark-gowned Leto, always

mild, kind to men and to the deathless gods, mild from the

beginning, gentlest in all Olympus. Also she bares Asteria of

happy name, whom Perses once led to his great house to be

called his dear wife. And she conceived and bare Hecate

whom Zeus the son of Cronos [Kronos] honored above all.

He gave her splendid gifts, to have a share of the earth and

the unfruitful sea. She received honor being a star

constellation in heaven, and is honored exceedingly by the

deathless gods. For to this to custom, he calls upon Hecate.

Great honor comes in full to him whose prayers the goddess

receives favorably, and she bestows wealth upon him; for

the power surely is with her.

For as many as were born of Earth and Ocean amongst allthese she has her due portion. The son of Cronos did her no

wrong nor took anything away of all that was her portion

among the former Titan gods: but she holds, as the division

was at the first from the beginning, privilege both in earth,

and in heaven, and in sea. Also, because she is an only child,

the goddess receives not less honor, but much more still, for

Zeus honors her. Whom she wills to, she greatly aids and

advances: she sits by worshipful kings in judgments, and in

the assembly whom she will is distinguished among the

    people.

And when men arm themselves for the battle that destroysmen, then the goddess is at hand to give victory and grant

glory to whom she wills. Good is she also when men

contend at the games, for there too the goddess is with them

and profits them: and he who by might and strength gets the

victory wins the rich prize easily with joy, and brings glory

    to his parents.

And she is good to stand by horsemen, whom she will: and

to those whose business is in the sea and who pray to

Hecate, the loud-crashing Earth-Shaker goddess gives great

catch. She also takes it away if she wills. She is good in the

byre with Hermes to increase the stock. The droves of kine

and wide herds of goats and flocks of fleecy sheep, if she

will, she increases from a few, or makes many to be less.

So, then. Albeit her mother's only child, she is honored

amongst all the deathless gods. And the son of Cronos made

her a nurse of the young who after that day saw with their

eyes the light of all-seeing Dawn. So from the beginning she

is a nurse of the young, and these are her honors. (ll. 404-452)

    Relations in the Greek Pantheon

    ========================

Hecate is a pre-Olympian Greek earth goddess. It is certain

that her origin is from Asia Minor (Karia). The Greek

sources don't have a similar story of her parents or herrelations in the Greek pantheon: Sometimes Hecate is a

Titaness, daughter of Perses and Asteria, who is a mighty

helper and protector of mankind. She is a Titaness who was

not banned into the underworld realms after their (Kronos

Titans, not Zues Titans and Giants.) defeat through Zues

Olympians (Titans - also referred to as our planets>Solar

    System).

It is also told that she is the daughter of Demeter or Pheraia,

which appears understandable due to the fact, that Hecate

like Demeter was a goddess of the earth and fertility. Or

that she may even be a daughter of Zeus. Like many ancientmother or earth-goddesses, she remains unmarried and has

no regular consort. On the other side she is the mother of

    many monsters.

THE ARGONAUTICA BOOK IV (ll. 783-832):

Ausonian Scylla the deadly, whom night-wandering Hecate,

who is called Crataeis, bare to Phoreys, lest swooping upon

them with her horrible jaws she destroy the chiefest of the

    heroes.

But most sources agree that she is a goddess, who was

never part of the Olymp or the Olympian family, but still

    powerful and worshipped. [Venus?]

She aided Demeter with news about her robbed daughter

    Persephone:

But when the tenth enlightening dawn had come, Hecate,

with a torch in her hands, met her, and spoke to her and told

her news: (ll. 54-58) `Queenly Demeter, bringer of seasons

and giver of good gifts, what god of heaven or what mortal

man has rapt away Persephone and pierced with sorrowyour dear heart? For I heard her voice, yet saw not with my

eyes who it was. But I tell you truly and shortly all I know.'

(ll. 59-73) So, then, said Hecate. And the daughter of rich-

haired Rhea answered her not, but sped swiftly with her,

holding flaming torches in her hands. (Homeric Hymns).

Leads Persephone back from Hades to Her mother,

    Demeter and gets reward:

Then bright-coiffed (head dress) Hecate came near to them,

and often did she embrace the daughter of holy Demeter:

and from that time the lady Hecate was minister and

companion to Persephone (Homeric Hymns, ll. 438-440).The close connection between Hecate, Persephone and

Demeter is interesting in that one could suspect that the

threesome is probably the earliest example of a triple-

goddess involving Hecate. She is also a mother-goddess

who wears the lunar disk and carries a torch, referring to

    her role as light bringer.

The main functions of Hecates priesthood were casting

and sacred groves. A key function seems to have been

directing choruses of flower-garlanded children, singing

hymns of praise to Hecate.According to Euripides in "Iphigeneia in Tauris" "Iphigeneia

was a priestess of the goddess, worshipped in Tauri.

believed to have been a priestess of Hecate too.

Medea was also a priestess of Hecate and a mighty witch

that is told in the Argonautica-Book. She called upon

Hecates name in Colchis and Corinth to guide her:

Medea then going from chamber to chamber in search of her

sister, for Hera detained her within that day; but beforetime

she was not wont to haunt the palace, but all day long was

    Her Role

    =======

"The Chtonian" was a -still in roman times- very popular

Greek goddess, often combined with Artemis or

Persephone, who's role -like mentioned before- transformed

from a goddess of fertility, childbirth, protector of mankindand all other earth-aspects from birth to growth to death

into a Queen of ghosts, a mighty and scary Goddess of

Magic, Nights, the time of the waning moon, where she

could give vision and assist in magical procedures.

She was the Goddess of the three-ways (crossroads), where

she protected people from taking the wrong road. And she

protected the Gates from any evil spirit to enter. She also

guides travelers in general and sailors in particular. She held

the keys to three roads: to Hades, to Heaven and to a lucky

    life on earth.

In later times she became the patroness of witches, magicians and sorcery. The Question is not, that Hecate did

not have these aspects in her nature, and it is whether these

    are her only aspects.

Many today-pagans worship the wonderful, loving and

caring, sweet and gentle good Goddess or the lunatic, dark

aspects of the Goddess. My opinion and believe is that these

aspects can only be seen as a whole and that Hecate

combines all these aspects of nature as an incarnation of the

    Great Goddess.

Her annual festival in Greece was on August 13th/14th was

a proprietary one, to avert the harvest-destroying storms

which the Moon was apt to send at around that time.

One of her festivals celebrated in the city Stratonicea in

    Caria was called: Hecatesia.

As a goddess of the Moon she is often set equal to Selene.

As a goddess of growth and fertility, she is seen equal to

Demeter. As a goddess of the hunt and the wild animals, she

is seen equal to Artemis. It is more than obvious that her attributes and her role have

some similarities with Lilith and the dark sides of Ishtar and

    Astarte.

    ===============

    Hecate as the Witch

    ===============

How did Hecate become transformed from a popular, bright

young Goddess into a dark and terrifying hag? Perhaps we

will never know for certain, but there are some fascinating

    clues.

Edith Hamilton's Mythology says of Hecate: " She wasassociated with deeds of darkness, the Goddess of the

Crossways, which held to be ghostly places of evil magic.

    An awful divinity".

Hamilton appears to be drawing on the later Greek poets for

her description. Comparing late and early verses on Hecate

will make my point clearer. For Valerius Flaccus, Hecate is

    dark and terrifying:

[Medea] wearies heaven above and Tartarus beneath with

her complains; she beats upon the ground, and murmuring

into her clutching hands calls on the Queen of Night

[Hecate] and Dis [Haides] to bring her aid by granting

death, and to send him who is the cause of her madness

down with her to destruction. Valerius Flaccus, The

Argonautica 7.311, Latin Epic from around the 1st AD.

But in the 5th and 6th BC, a very different picture emerges:

"[Hecate] the golden-shining attendant of Aphrodite." -

Greek Lyric I Sappho or Alcaeus, Fragments, C6th

BC"Torch-bearing Hecate, Holy Daughter of great-bosomed Nyx." -Greek Lyric IV Bacchylides, Fragments,

    C5th BC

    (Quotes taken from http://www.theoi.com/Ouranos/Hekate.html)

In fact no other Greek deity attracted such atmosphere of

'evil and debased superstition' (Farnell, The Cults of the

    Greek States p. 503).

Hecate has long been associated with crossroads where

three roads meet. In ancient Greek religion the soul was

judged at a place where three roads meet. One road led to

the Elysian Fields, one to the Fields of Asphodel, and the

third road to Tartarus. So any crossroads where three roadsmeet might symbolize this place of judgment, and be seen as

    a sacred place.

But crossroads are also seen as ominous and dangerous

places. In many traditions this is where suicides and

criminals were buried. Were the two aspects associated or

confused in some way? It's notable that it is specifically

crossroads where three roads meet that are sacred to

Hecate, whereas any crossroad is deemed as ominous.

The Romans adopted Hecate, and Her role shifted again.

Hecate became an aspect of the moon Goddess, Diana

Triformus: Diana (the Full moon, associated with Earth),

Proserpina (the lunar phases, associated with Heaven), and

Hecate (the New moon, associated with the Underworld.)

As the power of the Solar Gods rose, Hecate became

increasingly demonized, until by the Middle Ages She was

reduced to a parody of an evil crone.

    Her Signs and Symbols=================

All wild animals were sacred to Hecate, and she was

sometimes shown with three animal heads - the dog, snake,

and lion, or alternately the dog, horse, and bear. This aspect

refers to her ruler ship over the ancient tripartite year of

spring, summer, and winter. However, her primary animal

form and familiar was the dog or wolf.

Torches are Her symbol, for the Dark Mother also holds the

light, which illuminates the Unconscious and reveals its

    treasures.

Sacred Plants: Yew tree, the tree of death (Greek: taxus),Hemlock (see f.e. Shakespeare: Macbeth IV, 1.25)

Key (to the Underworld), Rope, Dagger.

The moon; especially the full or the dark moon.

For divination, the Greeks used an instrument called

'Hecate's Circle', a golden sphere with a sapphire hidden

    inside it.

The hallucinogenic medicinal plant, Aconite, once called,

"Hecateis", and produced by the saliva of Cerberus,

belonged to Her. This herb reached mankind when Hercules

forced Cerberus from Hades, spraying the Earth with the

According to the Homeric Hymns Hecate herself dwells in a

    cave:

(ll. 19-32) only tender-hearted Hecate, bright-coiffed, thedaughter of Persaeus, heard the girl (Persephone) from her

    cave.

Earliest sign of her cult: religious law of the Molpoi

(recorded 100 B.C.) from Milet, probably from the 5the

century B.C. and an archaian round altar with inscriptions.

Temples in Milet (today in Turkey), Argos, Eleuis, Aigina

and in Athen many Altars were found in front of the houses,

    dedicated to Hecate.

In Pausanias Description of Greece he speaks of Hecate and

    how she is worshiped:

Of the gods, the Aeginetans worshipped mostly was Hecate.

In her honor every year they celebrate mystic rites, which,

they say, Orpheus the Thracian established among them.

Within the enclosure is a temple; its wooden image is the

work of Myron, and it has one face and one body. It was

Alcamenes, in my opinion, which first made three images of

Hecate attached to one another, a figure called by the

Athenians Epipurgidia (on the Tower); it stands beside thetemple of the Wingless Victory. [2.30.3]
