Research Abstract This research deals with the phenomena of changes in the
structure of the past tense. In this study, the phenomena is first described, analyzed and explained. This is done in the light of its occurrence in specialized references with the objective of identifying the types of these changes in the morphological structure, the manner of their occurrence in order to detect the rules that govern this phenomenon. The research reveals that there are two types of changes. The first is morphological where structures differ morphologically and then semantically. The second is phonological where morphological structures retain their forms, but the change occurs at the phonological level inside the structure itself in accordance with specific phonological and morphological rules. The most import among these rules are: replacement, analogy, deletion and addition. The research ends with conclusion that most changes of both types do not yield semantic or lexicographical differences, but they simply indicate the wide spectrum of use for the sake of simplification and perfection.
