OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2017 3

Hi Everyone! By the time you read this I

will likely no longer be President having served our maximum permitted consecu-

tive term of 2 years. It’s been an amazing two years getting to know more about our members and what their needs are and representing our organiza-tion at various events including USDF meetings and the MD Horse Industry Day. Busy represent-ing our sport to non- riders and those engaged in other disciplines. What has struck me most is how dedicated and committed many of our members are to dressage and learning more about it. For many years I have heard ideas and suggestions from members and non-members on what they need and want to have available to them. This was why I joined the Board of Directors. In the time I’ve worn this hat we’ve continued trying to meet those needs as highlighted in a membership survey a few years ago. Our more recent Education survey has borne out that we are on the right track. Membership is growing and we are more tightly focused on listening to that input. As dressage in MD continues to grow we have, and continue to seek, new ways of providing access to education that works- especially for our Adult Amateurs who put so much into the sport. We all face new chal-lenges in in a world that seems faster paced, with so much more competing for our time, attention and resources. PVDA continues to support your jour-ney developing the art and sport of dressage. I hope you will continue to share that journey with us. We need member engagement, feedback, a little of your time as a volunteer for a show, event or com-

Peninsula DressageSubmitted by Amy Schine

Peninsula Dressage has been very busy with show season now in full swing. Renaissance Stable hosted a schooling show on June 10th; we had great weather, great

facilities, helpful volunteers, and close to 50 rides judged by Annmari Ingersoll. Everyone enjoyed Annmari’s posi-tive, helpful feedback and encouragement, and as a scribe, it was wonderful to see all the riders leave the ring excited about the tips she gave, and with big smiles on their faces! Thanks to Susi and Barchan Canter for offering their farm free of grounds fees; to show manager, Jenny Mlyniec who organized, and kept the show running smoothly, and to all our volunteers braving the heat to help out. Our July show at WinAway Farm was also a huge success despite the heat wave. We had over 60 rides, judged by Aviva Nebsky. We always appreciate her support, encourage-ment and putting her heart and soul into helping each rider improve. Thanks to Jen Pino for all her hard work in managing this huge show; to Diane Bloxom for host-ing at her beautiful farm and being there to help out, and

of course to all the volunteers who came out to help also. For our July meeting we were lucky to have Kim Briele,

“L” Judge, educate us on the topic of “the gaits”. She clarified exactly what all “those” terms mean: purity, rhythm, regular/irregular tempo, elevation, and freedom relating to each of the gaits.

Special thanks to our demo horses who helped to dem-onstrate the varying gaits among different breeds; “Catch the Breeze” (Arabian), “Adagia” (Andalusion), and “A Midday Star” (Irish Sport Horse). Our August meeting was a relaxed dinner and brief business meeting at the Olive Garden

We had two amazing and packed clinics in August. We were so excited to have Kathy Rowse, “S” Judge, come back for a 2 day clinic at Kim Briele’s Horse Bridge Farm. Everyone was raving about how helpful their lessons were; lots of “Light Bulb” moments! We were also thrilled to welcome back Aviva Nebsky, “L” Judge, for a one day clinic, also at Horse Bridge Farm. As always, everyone who rode with Aviva felt they came away with new and valuable tools. We hope to have both Aviva and Kathy back again soon, it’s always a wonderful experience riding with both of these talented, helpful, and fun clinicians.

PVDA Fall Show and Adult Team Competition

In conjunction with our Fall recognized show at Prince George’s Equestrian Center November 11-12, 2017, PVDA is hosting a USDF Adult Team Competition. Special awards for this, so get a team together and join the fun! Adult Team classes will be subsidized for PVDA members with 8 hours of volunteer time. PVDA will refund the cost of both challenge classes. Questions about ATC teams? Contact Liz Erwin at [email protected].

2017 Year-End Awards DinnerThe year-end awards dinner will be held Saturday, January

13, 2018 at Laurel Park in Laurel, Md. Be sure to get your volunteer hours in! As an all-volunteer organization we rely on our volunteers to be able to offer schooling shows, recognized shows, educational events, and special events throughout the year. We ask each rider to provide at least 8 hours of volunteer service during the competition year to qualify for a year-end high score award. If a rider is unable to provide the volunteer hours an immediate family member can perform the hours for them. Or, another option is our Silver Sponsorship. Sponsorship of any PVDA show or event at the Silver Sponsor Level or above ($100 or more) will also provide year-end award eligibility.

Scores from the 2017 PVDA Fall Show will count towards year-end scores. An average of scores is used (in most cases). The high and low scores are dropped and the rest are aver-aged, with the exception of musical freestyles, pas de deux, quadrille, dressage seat equitation, and FEI tests, where all scores are used.

2018 Show SeasonThe PVDA Schooling Shows Committee is working on

dates and venues for our 2018 show season. If you have sug-gestions or would like to volunteer your facility please contact

the chair of that committee. Competitors, we value your feed-back, fill out a schooling show evaluation. This can be found on our website under the Shows Tab.

PVDA Cover Photo Competition!Win a prize if we select your photo for our cover! The

entry must state the rider name, horse name, photographer, and have a resolution no less than than 300 dpi. Photos taken by phones are NOT high enough quality. Please submit in either a JPG or TIFF format. Photos must be taken by you or accompanied by an email release from photographer authoriz-ing use for PVDA cover, website, and promotional purposes. If you are the photographer you agree to this by submitting items. Send submissions of photos to [email protected].

Charlotte Dujardin’s Masterclass ReportBy Diana Walcutt

When I won the raffle for the clinic, I was over the moon, but that did not compare to the thrill of actually attending Charlotte Dujardin’s Masterclass at the World Equestrian Center in Wilmington, Ohio. Angela White donated two incredible tickets to the Ride for Life raffle, so I invited my coach and very dear friend, Claudia Kleinsmith, as my guest. Wow! Just wow! Our seats were at E. Just imagine THAT!! “Exciting and fun” are words that cannot even embrace the experience.

Charlotte was tough but funny. She had a clear under-standing of how to improve each rider/horse combination, although most of them struggled with the canter/walk transition and by the time 4 horses had gone, she was get-ting a little peeved. She was still very funny about it though, commenting that she wasn’t up for asking the fourth rider for the transition until later in the ride.

So, what did we learn? The 5 horses ranged from Training/First Level through Grand Prix. I learned that the problems I face with my horse are the same throughout the levels, although of course the movements (or “tricks” as she called them) are more sophisticated as they progress. Bending, flexion, impulsion, straightness, relaxation, soft-ness of the hands and elbows, and the rider’s body position were the common themes throughout the evening. Ever heard those things from your trainer? What about a mil-

lion times! Oh, and practice, practice, practice……… She also stressed that it was important to do short train-

ing sessions with young horses. We may forget that they are not strong enough and tire easily, both physically and mentally. 20 minutes may be more than enough. Don’t lunge them until they are exhausted, either.

The pirouette was very interesting. Charlotte remarked that the first half of the pirouette could be tight, but as you crossed halfway, you needed to widen the circle with each stride in order to maintain impulsion. As you do that, you are still preserving cadence and are better prepared for moving forward out of the pirouette. Made lots of sense!

It was a trip of a lifetime for me. Thank you, Angela White and PVDA!

Lesson Lottery TestimonialBy Karen Siebert

I just wanted to let you know that I had my lesson lot-tery lesson with Aviva Nebesky this past Sunday, September 24, 2017. It was wonderful as usual. Aviva has quite a gift when working with riders of all levels. She is able to provide a different approach when a rider is hav-ing difficulty in a certain movement. We addressed sev-eral areas that I have been struggling with as we prepare for second level GAIG championships.

I came out of the lesson feeling very optimistic and like we had improved on each movement. A big thank you to PVDA for providing such a wonderful program as the les-son lottery and a bigger thank you to Aviva for all her help and guidance. Aviva Nebesky and Karen Siebert at a show post-lesson.

Much better weather for the 2nd of our back-to-back one day recognized shows. Once the skies cleared the sun broke out and we had a glorious day. Congratulations to everyone for great riding and as always kudos to our grand volunteers. I got so many comments from riders and officials about how wonderful our volunteers are.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2017 11

SEPTEMBER PVDA BOARD MEETINGDate: September 11, 2017; Meeting #578Location: Linda Speer's Farm in Clarksville, Md.

ATTENDANCEBoard Members Present: Mimi Mack, Lynn Adams, Carolyn Del Grosso, Cheryl Resch, Marcia Mia, Christina Dale, Liz Erwin, Wendy Emblin, Linda Speer, Claire LaceyExcused Absences: Susan Stone, Camilla CornwellMembers at Large: Ingrid GentryOLD BUSINESS: Minutes from the August 2017 meeting were approved Carolyn, seconded by Christina.

COMMITTEE REPORTSEducation: The survey is getting responses, there was a good geographic spread. One suggestion that was made is that we have an event like the Horse Expo, but have the focus be only on dressage. Liz, Betsy, and Claire met to put together details on the Fall Festival, which is the Saturday before Chapter Challenge. Barbara Strawson and Becky Langwost-Barlow are con-firmed clinicians. There will be demo rides at intro, training and first level. There will also be subsidized les-sons with the clinicians. Claire will do a talk on biome-chanics, Suzy Coffey will do saddle fitting. Fundraising: The lesson lottery was picked, we raised $450. Mimi will contact the people to let them know which trainers they got.Governance: No new nominations for the Board have come in. Linda nominated Michelle Miller, Liz nomi-nated Adrian Griner, Nancy Bowlus indicated she would be interested. There are not enough to have an election, but we need to confirm with the nominees and the board.Membership: We currently have 600 members. Liz

went back to 2012 and created a list of members, minus those that we don’t have emails for. She sent the list to Christina for e-blasts. New people who sign up will now get a welcome packet with a sticker, pam-phlets, a list of shows etc.Ride for Life: Trying to meet with Hopkins to have a wrap-up on this year’s show. We need to look at ribbons for next year. Next year will be the 15th year, so we should think about themes. A motion was made for PVDA to bump up the total going to Johns Hopkins to $65,000. Carolyn made the motion, Marcia second. Passed unanimously.Schooling Shows: Lucky Cricket got only 8 entries so it was cancelled. Shows: We made $3,000 on Loch Moy this year. We spent a lot of money on awards. It was decided to stretch awards to 6 per class, and then split classes after that. It was suggested that a test of choice be done, rather than having a two-day show. People may not come the second day because it is so expensive. It was also suggested we do more opportunity classes to attract more riders. It was noted that the stabling and footing at Loch Moy are very good. The TD wrote a glowing report on the facility, foot-ing, and volunteers. The competitors seem to like it too. Carolyn will look into getting a lower price on using the facility.Special Events: The Annual Awards Dinner, date is set for Jan. 13th, 2018. At Laurel Park the room is over $1,000 which is more expensive than the previous year.Volunteers: Claire offered to coordinate volunteers this year.Website: Claire has been cleaning up the home page, she did the banner for Loch Moy, and will now replace it with the Fall Festival.
