INTRODUCTION
Several years ago my good friend and colleague, Dr. Phyllis T. Johnson,
.began her search of the literature for scientific publications on the
pathology of invertebrates other than insects. The result of her work
culminated with the publishing of a book titled, "An Annotated Bibliography
of Pathology in Invertebrates Other Than Insects," Burgess Publishing Company,
a -= 1968, which contains over 2,000 references. In 1969, Dr. Johnson found it
1-necessary to publish a supplemental bibliography containing approximately 500
references (Miscellaneous Publication No.1, Center for Pathobiology,
University of California, Irvine). At that time, she told me that she was
through with her search of the literature on invertebrate pathology. I,
personally, have found both of these publications to be invaluable in my
I l -. research. Therefore, I have .compiled a sequel to Dr. Johnson's supplement
which I hope will be as valuable to my colleagues in the field of invertebrate
pathology as her work has been to me.
All material included in this bibliography has been published except for
, ' a few theses citations. The bibliography is arranged phylogenetically with
the authors listed alphabetically, and chronologically by year of publication
under each ppylum. Where a paper deals with animals of more than one phylum,
it is listed under the GENERAL,heading. The majority of citations 'in this
bibliography are of papers published between 1969-1972, although several older
works are listed that were not previously listed in the earlier bibliographies
of Dr. Johnson. In keeping with Dr. Johnson's earlier bibliographies, I have
limited this bibliography as much as possible to papers dealing with disease,
1= t abnormality, and actual pathological processes in the affected animals. However,
.i
certain types of nonpathological papers have been cited because of their
close association to the subject of invertebrate pathology. For example,
papers dealing with the normal structure, chemistry, and function of
invertebrate blood cells have been included because these cells play such
a prominent role in the invertebrate defense mechanisms. Although I
have read the majority of articles listed as either the original article
or the abstract~ no attempt has been made to annotate any of the citations.
This bibliography contains references listed in the literature through
April 1972.
I would like to thank Dr. Johnson for her initial encouragement and
·help concerning this bibliography. Special thanks are· due Mrs.·Helen
Lang, Librarian at the Oxford Laboratory, for help in correcting and
checking the citations against the original articles. Mrs. Lang and
Mrs. Nadine Wheatley are acknowledged for their excellent'typing of the
