for current occupants of any Italian workspaces”. Well, one year later, we would better swing around and clap ourhands in front of a triumphal revolution 100% Made in Turin.

Carlo Ratti is the mind behind the process: Director of MIT Sensible City Lab and Founding partner at Carlo RattiAssociati design and innovation office, the man has made the future his own personal bread and butter, whilstdeveloping extensive researches on public spaces’ ongoing evolution (originally conceived for Expo Milano 2015, theSupermarket of the Future is now reality, read also → Come sarà il supermercato del futuro?).

Ratti has recently been appointed to renovate the villa once inhabited by FIAT founder Gianni Agnelli in the early1900’s, later converted into a hub for design experimentation following its restyling by some of Italy’s most prestigiousarchitects, like Amedeo Albertini and Gabetti & Isola.

Now, things have gone well beyond: the renovated building naturally learns and is synchronised to its users’ needs, thusoptimising space usage and limiting energy waste. By leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, the new AgnelliFoundation headquarters have become a digitally-augmented workspace that can adapt in real time to its users’ needs:indeed, a smartphone App allows occupants to check in, interact with coworkers, book meeting rooms, and regulateenvironmental settings in real time, with an unprecedented degree of personalisation (quite a hot topic lately, to theextent that Apple Campus in Cupertino has just dismissed the so-called “thermostat war” with a “breathing building” thatuses soffits beneath the canopies to inhale, and shafts to exhale warm air. Read also → Apple Park, tutto quello che devisapere). Thanks to the technical collaboration with Siemens Italy, the century-old edifice has been equipped withhundreds of sensors that monitor different sets of data, including the location of the building’s occupants, temperature,CO2 concentration, and the availability of meeting rooms.

“As work has become increasingly digital, why should we bother to go into the office?”, asks Carlo Ratti. “The keyanswer to that question lies in human interaction. The central idea behind the Agnelli Foundation project is that byseamlessly integrating digital technologies within the physical space, we can forge better relationships between peopleand with the building they inhabit, ultimately fostering interaction and creativity. This is what we call Office 3.0.”

Stretching on a 3,000 square-metre area, the co-working space will be run by Talent Garden; the European platform fordigital talents will house more than 70 companies (including Foodora) and 350 among innovators, students andprofessors of a didactic laboratory due to start at the beginning of the next school year. Carlo Ratti Associati has openedthe building to the city and to the garden, by adding a protruding glass body that hosts a café and acts as an invitingelement to passerby in the near neighbourhood, and stages Olafur Eliasson’s ‘La congiuntura del tempo’ kaleidoscopicinstallation. All around the building, an orchard and green areas designed by Louis Benech – the French landscapearchitect who remodelled the Tuileries gardens in Paris and the Water Theatre Grove at the Palace of Versailles –provide its occupants with the chance to work outdoors, in close link with nature.

The project embodies the vision of an architecture “that senses and responds”, potentially representing a breakthrough inthe way in which IoT (Internet of Thing) technologies can be incorporated into the built environment. Kicking off fromTurin, Italy.
