Preparing to Hear God’s Word

Gathering Song

Open Our Eyes, Lord Robert Cull Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus;

to reach out and touch Him and say that we love Him.

Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen; Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus.

Welcome

We Worship in Song As With Gladness Men of Old Pilgrim Hymnal 119

As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold; as with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright;

so, most glorious Lord, may we evermore be led to Thee.

As with joyful steps they sped to that lowly manger bed, there to bend the knee before Him whom heaven and earth adore;

so may we with willing feet ever seek thy mercy seat.

As they offered gifts most rare, at that manger rude and bare, so may we with holy joy, pure and free from sin’s alloy,

all our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to thee, our heavenly King.

Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah Pilgrim Hymnal 93 Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, pilgrim though this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty; hold me with thy powerful hand;

bread of heaven, bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more, feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing stream doth flow; let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through;

strong deliverer, strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield, be thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; death of death, and hell's destruction, land me safe on Canaan's side;

songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to thee, I will ever give to thee.

Our Creed Stroman I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified and died.

He descended into Hell; on the third day he rose again. He ascended into heav’n, and is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

Call to Worship Leader: You are a child of God, an important part of this

interwoven universe. People: Help us care for each other and for all life. Leader: No person is an island, we all belong to God’s family. People: Help us to respect all people. Leader: We are amazed at the possibilities of each person’s life. People: Help us to show understanding and acceptance to all.

Bill Wallace Aotearoa, New Zealand

Prayer of Invocation O Lord of light, in this hour of worship, in this beautiful place, make pure our hearts, and we shall see thee. Reveal thyself to us, and we shall love

thee. Strengthen our wills, and we shall choose the good from the evil, and day by day manifest in the world the glory and power of thy blessed

Gospel, which thou has made known to us through thy Son Jesus Christ. I. Wayan Mastra, Bali

Hearing God’s Word

Scripture Reading Zena Martin Acts 10:34-36, 44-48

34 Peter said, “I really am learning that God doesn’t show partiality to one group of people over another. 35 Rather, in every nation, whoever worships him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 This is the message of peace he sent to the Israelites by proclaiming the good news through Jesus Christ: He is Lord of all!

44 While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell on everyone who heard the word. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 They heard them speaking in other languages and praising God. Peter asked, 47 “These people have received the Holy Spirit just as we have. Surely no one can stop them from being baptized with water, can they?” 48 He directed that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited Peter to stay for several days. (Common English Bible)

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Responding to God’s Word

Song of Response Baptized and Set Free Cathy Skogen-Soldner

We are people created, chosen by God. Then we're washed, ever gently, in mercy and love.

Sin has power no more, Jesus opened the door to a fountain bringing healing and wholeness and more.

We are fed and we're nourished, filled and refreshed. Then our hunger returns and again we are blessed.

For whatever the need, God is greater indeed: endless ocean, always deeper than all of our need.

We are nourished by water, all living things, and by life that the Spirit abundantly brings.

As we journey toward home, may your presence be known: precious river, ever flowing, now carry us home.

Now with praise and thanksgiving, we join the song. All are welcome! We gather to sing loud and strong. Not enslaved, but set free! From now on, all will be

one in Jesus, one in water, baptized and set free!

Pastoral Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
