For these reasons, the Hobe Sound Chamber’s Board of Directors made the creation of a new website top pri- ority for staff. We are proud to announce that the goal of launching a user-friendly site was reached. On January 12th we rolled out a brand new website at the Member Breakfast. You may be wondering: what does a new website mean to me? Our answer is simple and two fold. First, the new website means increased exposure for Chamber members through the Member Directory. The Directory drives more traffic to individual member websites while easily and quickly showing contact information, location and business descriptions to searchers. All members start off with a Level 3 Listing on the Directory. To receive added exposure, there is an option to increase your Listing Level to 4 for a nomi- nal fee per year. Opportunities for referrals will not end with the Business Directory. The new website is hosted by Weblink a national company specializing in creating chamber websites. Website advertising opportunities are available for Chamber members who want to invest in extra promo- tion. Advertising exposure can be accomplished by pur- chasing Banner Ads on the website’s pages, or by spon- soring events which allow for your company logo and website to be associated with that event on the calendar section of the website. Our website is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to answer questions and allow you to track your Chamber involvement by pay- ing dues online, registering for events and updating company information quickly and easily. Nightingale Private Care is extremely pleased to pres-ent the 11th Annual Hobe Sound Festival of the Arts! Thisevent is anticipated each year by so many for its recogni-tion of our local artisans and their varied contributions tothe art culture of our area. The Festival truly puts HobeSound on the map in February of each year, and thisyear’s Festival is expected to be a highlight of the season!

Many business owners also look forward to theFestival, as guests from the surrounding area are intro-duced to all that Hobe Sound has to offer. The HobeSound Chamber does such an excellent job each year sup-porting business owners with their varied events , educa-tional offerings, advertising opportunities and even occa-sional emotional support! The Festival of the Arts is oneof the Chamber’s great offerings to this community, bringing over 30,000 people to Hobe Sound. As a busi-ness owner, I can’t say thank you enough for the oppor-tunity to be part of this great event.

When I joined the Chamber in 2009 I was invited tothe new member’s meeting, where I met a future col-league and friend who referred me to my first home

health client. Since that time, Nightingale has continuedto grow each week as we provide care for residents of ourcommunity who want to stay at home with dignity eventhough they may need help with their activities of dailylife. Nightingale can provide companions for shoppingand errands, home health aides for personal care, bathing, and household chores, and nurses for medication man-agement and other skilled tasks. We even employ a per-sonal chef that can make meals ahead and place them inyour refrigerator as needed. We are currently launchingour new NurseWatch system - a medical monitor that isplaced in the home so that a nurse can check in on yourloved one daily via a webcam. This monitor will recordvital signs, weight, and blood sugar readings - all of whichare automatically recorded in the Nightingale office toassist in monitoring the health of your loved one daily.

We’re very excited about the NurseWatch system andwill be demonstrating it at the Art Festival. This newsystem is a great addition to Nightingale as we work togive families peace of mind. Thankfully, we continueto grow by word of mouth, and that means so muchto us, as our clients have learned to trust our service ascaring and professional.

I will always thank the Chamber for my first client, and I am so happy to give back to our community withour contribution to the Festival of the Arts. We’ll seeyou there!

White Doves Holiday ProjectHelps 1,163 Local Families

Not even tough economic times could keep MartinCounty’s less fortunate families from enjoying aChristmas filled with loads of holiday cheer and toys fortheir children.

Thanks to the thousands of toys donated through theU.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program at more than120 local drop-off locations, a total of 1,163 familieswith 2,750 children were served through the 2011White Doves Holiday Project.

“This year, more than 60 local nonprofit organiza-tions, social service agencies and schools referred familiesto White Doves,” said Carol Hodnett, director of MartinVolunteers. “We rely on these agencies to only refer thefamilies they know could use our help the most.”

A project of United Way of Martin County’s MartinVolunteers program, White Doves has been helpingstruggling families during the holidays for more than 20years by providing toys for their children and groceries.

“White Doves couldn’t possibly make such a signifi-cant impact in the life of local residents without the morethan 200 volunteers who donate their time to count, sortand display the collected toys by age and gender,” saidCarlene Stangle, volunteer coordinator.

Volunteers like Dee Patton, have been volunteeringwith White Doves for years and continue to come backyear after year.

“It’s so rewarding to give my time to such a worthyproject,” Patton said. “I look forward to working witheveryone each year.”

Several local businesses, such as WW Lumber,Straccuzi Realty, Publix Supermarkets and WasteManagement have supported White Doves for morethan 20 years through large in-kind contributions andthis year, Gran Park Self Storage stepped up in a big wayby providing storage units and the use of a box truck forpicking up shopping carts and other large items.

Numerous private communities, like Palm CoveWomen’s Club, also got involved by hosting events whereresidents were invited to bring food or toys that were thenbrought to the White Doves warehouse for distribution.

The Hobe Sound Toasters, Toastmasters InternationalClub had to rely on their hearing and memory skills asToastmaster Cathy Koyanagi led their first “meeting inthe dark” on January 10th. Thanks to Cathy, the attend-ing Toasters can all see a little better the challenges thevisually impaired deal with on a daily basis.

Cathy is almost completely blind but attendsToastmaster meetings in at least two different clubs, attends and teaches at Toastmaster leadership trainingsand has founded a Toastmasters Club for the visuallyimpaired through the Lighthouse for the Blind.

At the “meeting in the dark” the agendas were inBraille and the lights were turned out as the Toasters lis-tened to three wonderful speakers - Peggy Mathias, RichOtten and Phil Delamarter. Phil won best speaker for hisspeech on the power of praise. Phil’s powerful wordsencouraged everyone to make a resolution to thank andpraise those who deserve it. (Maybe even those whodon’t-once in a while?)

Our evaluators where challenged because they couldn’ttake notes, they had to depend on their memories to pres-ent their evaluations. Joy Gouyd won best evaluator, going up against Dave Clarke and Audrey Burzynski.

Carol Labuhn’s Table Topics also gave everyone furtherinsight into life without vision. Participants put theirhand in a box and described what they felt. Dolphin, oneof the two guests visiting Toasters from the Jacksonville,North Carolina Toastmasters club won best Table Topics.

At the same meeting two new members were wel-comed - Nathan Beck, originally from Boise, ID, andJackie Hynes, who has visited Toasters before, and is nowa dual member with Gold Coast Toastmasters.

The January 24th meeting featured the club-levelInternational Speech Contest and Table Topics Contest.Participants included, Audrey Burznski, KathleenGemme, George Kleine, Carol Labuhn and Rich Otten.Contest Master was Brooke Samples and Guia Brownofficiated as Chief Judge. Representing Hobe SoundToasters in the Area Contest on February 8th will be RichOtten, 1st place winner of the International SpeechContest and George Kleine, 1st place winner of the TableTopics Contest. Taking 2nd place in the speech contestwas Carol Labuhn and for table topics, AudreyBurzynski. There were 7 guests present at the meeting.

Don’t beScammed byCyberCriminalsBy Jim Olsen CPA

The Internal Revenue Service receives thousands ofreports each year from taxpayers who receive suspi-cious emails, phone calls, faxes or notices claiming tobe from the IRS. Many of these scams fraudulentlyuse the IRS name or logo as a lure to make the com-munication appear more authentic and enticing. Thegoal of these scams – known as phishing – is to trickyou into revealing your personal and financial infor-mation. The scammers can then use your information– like your Social Security number, bank account orcredit card numbers – to commit identity theft orsteal your money.

Here are five things the IRS wants you to knowabout phishing scams.

1. The IRS never asks for detailed personal andfinancial information like PIN numbers, passwords orsimilar secret access information for credit card, bankor other financial accounts.

2. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayersby email to request personal or financial information. If you receive an e-mail from someone claiming to bethe IRS or directing you to an IRS site:

• Do not reply to the message.• Do not open any attachments. Attachments may

contain malicious code that will infect your computer.• Do not click on any links. If you clicked on links

in a suspicious e-mail or phishing website and enteredconfidential information, visit the IRS website andenter the search term ‘identity theft’ for more infor-mation and resources to help.

3. The address of the official IRS website iswww.irs.gov. Do not be confused or misled by sitesclaiming to be the IRS but ending in .com, .net, .orgor other designations instead of .gov. If you discover awebsite that claims to be the IRS but you suspect it isbogus, do not provide any personal information onthe suspicious site and report it to the IRS.

4. If you receive a phone call, fax or letter in themail from an individual claiming to be from the IRSbut you suspect they are not an IRS employee, contactthe IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to determine if the IRShas a legitimate need to contact you. Report anybogus correspondence. You can forward a suspiciousemail to [email protected].

5. You can help shut down these schemes and pre-vent others from being victimized. Details on how toreport specific types of scams and what to do if you’vebeen victimized are available at www.irs.gov. Click on“phishing” on the home page.

As the health care landscape continues to evolve, hospitals and providers are changing along with it. Thatincludes new services, treatments and methods of deliv-ering care.

In order to reflect the enhanced scope of services itnow provides to Treasure Coast residents, MartinMemorial Health Systems is changing its name toMartin Health System.

“What began as a small hospital more than 70 yearsago has transformed into a fully integrated health systemthat provides a vast spectrum of care for the region,” saidMiguel Coty, vice president and chief marketing com-munications officer for Martin Health System. “Today,

we not only provide exceptional care in our two hospitals,we offer preventive and primary care throughout Martinand St. Lucie counties. At the same time, we are collabo-rating on clinical research that will define how we delivercare tomorrow. The new name demonstrates the contin-uum of care we provide.”

Martin Health System began in 1939 as MartinCounty Hospital, a 23-bed facility located in Stuart thatwas created by local residents who saw the need for healthcare services. The name was eventually changed to MartinMemorial Hospital and as the community grew, so didMartin Memorial. In 1992, Martin Memorial HospitalSouth opened in south Stuart, and the organization was

renamed Martin Memorial Health Systems. Today, Martin Health System features two hospitals –

with a third opening in the west Port St. Lucie develop-ment of Tradition in 2014 – as well as award-winningcenters for cancer and heart care, physician offices, diag-nostic imaging, rehabilitation, health and fitness andmuch more.

The health system is a six-time winner of theThomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals award winner, has twice been named a Thomson Reuters 50 TopCardiovascular Hospital, and it has earned accredita-tion by The Joint Commission for knee and jointreplacement and as a primary stroke center.

Martin Health System is also expanding its clinicalresearch capabilities. That includes partnerships withlife sciences organizations at the Tradition Center forInnovation in west Port St. Lucie, as well as a contin-ued affiliation with Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampafor oncology clinical trials.

The health system is also partnering withHealthSouth to build a 34-bed comprehensive medicalrehabilitation hospital on the Martin Hospital Southcampus. The hospital is expected to be completed byspring 2013.

“The name change is subtle, but it represents anenhanced level of sophisticated services and high-qual-ity care that we are able to offer Treasure Coast resi-dents,” Coty said. “However, while our name may havechanged, our focus remains on providing exceptionalcare to the communities we serve and beyond.”

About Martin Health System: Martin Health Systemis a not-for-profit, community-based health care organ-ization that has served the region for more than 70years. It offers a continuum of care including preven-tive, primary and acute hospital care, as well as cancerand cardiac care, wellness and rehabilitation services. Itsapproximately 3,000 associates, 375 affiliated physi-cians and 900 volunteers provide care at 12 differentlocations serving Martin and St. Lucie counties. MartinHealth is a six-time winner of the Thomson Reuters100 Top Hospitals Award, has twice been named aThomson Reuters 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitalsaward winner, and received designation as a NationalEmployer of Choice designee for 2009 and 2010-11.To learn more, visit martinhealth.org.

You’ve no doubt heard that “time is money.” Whilethis expression may be applicable in many areas of life,it's especially relevant for investors - because the moretime you spend not investing, the less money you arelikely to have when you really need it, such as duringyour retirement. That’s why it’s essential that you don’twait to start saving for your days as a retiree.

Many people think it won’t make much difference ifthey delay investing for a few years. As you know, timeflies, and before you know it, “a few years” turns into adecade - and a decade’s postponement in saving forretirement can make an enormous difference in your life.

How big a difference? Suppose you plan to retire atage 65. If at age 25, you began putting $200 a monthinto a tax-deferred vehicle, such as a traditionalIndividual Retirement Account (IRA), and your invest-ments inside that IRA hypothetically earned on average7% a year, you would accumulate about $512,000 after40 years. However, if you had waited until you were age30 to start saving for retirement, with all else beingequal, you’d end up with only about $355,000 when youreached 65 - $157,000 less - due to that five-year delay. And if you waited 10 years, until you were 35, you’d endup with about $243,000 - far less than half of what youwould have accumulated had you started saving at 25.(Keep in mind that you will eventually have to pay taxeson these accumulations, and the actual figures don’treflect fees, commissions or expenses.)

Clearly, the cost of delay can be considerable - whichis why you should consider taking these steps:

• Develop a strategy with your financial advisor. It’seasier to stick to a strategy if you know where you’regoing. Your financial advisor can help you determine

how much you need to save toreach the type of retirementyou’ve envisioned.

• If you haven’t started sav-ing, begin now. If you waituntil you feel more financiallycomfortable before you investfor retirement, you may neverbegin. Even if you can putaway only a small amount, such as $50 per month, you’llhave made a start.

To make it easier on yourself, set up your accounts toautomatically move a set amount each month into yourIRA. As the above examples show, the best way to buildsubstantial savings is to start early, but even if you’re inyour 30s or 40s, you can catch up - although you’ll needto save more to potentially get to the same level.

• Increase your investments when your income rises.Every time you get a salary increase, boost your contri-butions to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employ-er-sponsored retirement plan.

• Don’t take a “timeout” from investing. Keep oninvesting, whether the “news of the day” is positive ornegative. The best investors are those who follow aconsistent strategy and continue investing, year in andyear out.

In short, save early, save often - and keep investing. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by
